Head Coach • 3rd season 

Andy Bashor is now in his third season 

with the Bulls after taking over the 

women’s swim team two years ago, and 

finishing his first season as the men’s 

coach last spring. With more than a decade 

of coaching experience under his 

belt, Bashor oversees a program that he hopes will establish a firm 

foothold within the Mid-American Conference. In the two seasons that 

Bashor has been at UB, both the women’s and men’s programs have 

made tremendous strides, making their mark in the Mid-American 

Conference and finishing in their best place at the conference meet 

since the 2001-2002 season. 

Bashor comes to Buffalo from Rutgers University where he spent 

four seasons as the head assistant swim coach for both the men’s 

and women’s programs. Bashor, who coached the sprinters and was 

the recruiting coordinator, helped lead the Scarlet Knights’ women’s 

swim team to one of its most successful campaigns in 2006 as the 

team finished second in the Big East Conference and qualified seven 

swimmers for the Women’s NCAA Championships. Rutgers was ranked 

13th in the final CSCAA women’s swimming rankings and finished in 

18th place at the 2006 NCAA Championships. While at Rutgers, Bashor 

was also part of a three-time women’s swimming and diving coaching 

staff of the year in the Big East. 

Prior to being hired at Rutgers, Bashor spent four seasons as the 

head assistant swim coach at University of California at Santa Barbara. 

He coached sprinters and breaststrokers in addition to serving as the 

team’s recruiting coordinator and the team’s strength coach. During 

his four seasons at UC-Santa Barbara, the men’s team won three Big 

West Conference titles, while the women won one Big West title. 

Bashor is no stranger to the Mid-American Conference as he spent 

two seasons as a graduate assistant swim coach at Ohio University 

where he received his master’s degree in Athletic Administration in 

1998. 

Bashor had a successful career as a collegiate swimmer as a fouryear 

letterwinner at North Carolina State University. Specializing in 

sprint free and butterfly, Bashor was a team captain during his senior 

season and received a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1996. 

Bashor currently resides in Lancaster, NY with his wife Brandi and 

their three children, Allie (5), Bobby (4) and Colby (2).

Karl a Helder 

Diving Coach • 5th season 

Karla Helder is in her fifth season as the 

men’s and women’s diving coach at the University 

at Buffalo and has helped the Bulls 

produce notable accomplishments in the diving 

program. 

While at UB, Helder has been instrumental 

in developing a strong diving program that 

featured new school records for both the men’s and women’s teams. In 

her previous four seasons, she has coached an ECAC men’s champion and 

two All-Mid-American Conference divers and six regional qualifiers, and 

just last year had two divers qualify for the NCAA meet for the first time 

in school history. A two-time NCAA Division II National Diving Coach 

of the Year, Helder came to Buffalo after nine seasons at the University of 

California at Davis, where Helder coached four national champions to four 

separate titles and 36 All-Americans. She was named PCSC Men’s Diving 

Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2003 and she also earned the conference’s 

Women’s Diving Coach of the Year award in 2001. 

Helder has earned 30 national diving titles herself. Most recently, at 

the 2008 U.S. Master’s Nationals, Helder won her age group events, and 

setting two new American records, breaking her own set in 2004. Helder 

swept gold in a unique event called Grand Masters, which has strict qualifying 

standards, and has a 15-year age range, as well. In March 2003, Helder 

set a World FINA record on three-meter and captured gold in one-meter 

event as well. 

In addition to UC-Davis, Helder has coached at Chico State and Clemson 

University. She was also the coach for the Venezuela Junior National 

Team of Anzoategui in 1991. At the 2003 Junior Olympic Summer Nationals, 

she coached a 10-year-old to double golds on both one and three-meters, 

as well as leading her diver to two new 13-and-under records in those 

events. 

Helder, a former two-time NCAA National Champion on the threemeter, 

is a 1982 graduate of Chico State University. In 1999, she was inducted 

into that institution’s athletic Hall of Fame. 

Co u r t n e y Ko s t i va l 

Assistant Coach • 3rd season 

No stranger to Mid-American Conference 

swimming, Courtney Kostival is in her third 

season as an assistant coach with the University 

at Buffalo after a stellar collegiate career. 

Last year, she helped the Bulls to one of their 

most successful seasons, as the Bulls broke 

10 women’s records and six men’s records. 

Kostival spent six seasons at fellow MAC institution Ohio University, 

swimming for four years and later joining the Bobcat coaching staff as 

a graduate assistant for the next two years. At Ohio, Kostival worked 

primarily with the distance swimmers. Kostival is one of three from the 

UB coaching staff with ties to Ohio University as head coach Andy Bashor 

was a graduate assistant from 1996-98 and UB assistant coach Aaron Bell 

served as an Ohio graduate assistant in the 2006-07 season. 

While swimming for the Bobcats, the Athens, OH native helped Ohio 

win the 2001 MAC Championship, the last time that UB’s Alumni Arena 

Natatorium hosted the MAC Championships. She capped off the 2001 

season by being named Ohio’s Most Improved Swimmer. 

Kostival swam in the 200, 500 and 1,650-yard freestyle during her 

time with the Bobcats and was selected to the Academic All-MAC team 

following her junior season. In her junior season, she was selected to the 

Academic All-MAC team and earned Ohio’s Tad Potter Award for excellence 

in leadership following both the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Kostival 

ended her athletic career with championship finishes in the 500 and 

1,650-yard freestyle races at the 2004 MAC Championships. 

Kostival received her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education 

from Ohio in 2004 and her master’s degree in Coaching Education 

in 2006. 

Aa r o n Bell 

Assistant Coach • 2nd season 

Aaron Bell will start his second season as 

an assistant coach with the Bulls. In his first 

season at UB, Bell helped the Bulls to one of 

their most successful seasons as the women 

set 10 new records, and the men set six. 

Prior to coming to UB, Bell spent time on 

the coaching staff at Ohio University and the 

University of Miami, prior to coming to Buffalo. At Ohio, Bell was an assistant 

for the men’s and women’s swimming teams where he assisted 

in all facets of the program and worked primarily with Ohio’s middle 

distance swimmers. 

Bell had a stellar career at Clarion University where he was a 20-time 

NCAA Division II All-American. While with the Golden Eagles, he also was 

a seven-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion and 

qualified for the Senior National Championships. 

“Aaron is very enthusiastic and he is a great recruiter,” said head 

coach Andy Bashor, upon Bell’s hiring. “He loves to get out on the road 

and watch young swimmers and he also brings experience working with 

elite college swimmers. His experiences at Miami and Ohio will help this 

program tremendously.” 

Mi c h a e l To m e s 

Graduate Assistant • 2nd season 

Michael Tomes begins his second season 

as the graduate assistant for the men’s and 

women’s programs. Tomes worked with 

Bashor and the assisstant coaches to help the 

team with one of the their most successful 

seasons. 

Tomes, who enrolled in the exercise science 

graduate program at UB, joined the Bulls in 2007 after a swimming career 

at the University of Evansville and The Ohio State University. With the 

Buckeyes in the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, Tomes helped the squad 

to a 20-3 dual meet record and two NCAA Championships appearance. 

Tomes was an honorable mention Academic All-American and a Big Ten 

All-Academic Team selection during the 2005-06 season, while winning 

the Most Prestigious Swimmer Award for the Buckeyes. Tomes was also 

a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference athlete while at Evansville. 

“Michael’s biggest asset is that he is coming here from a major 

conference,” said head coach Andy Bashor upon Tomes’ hiring. “I am 

looking for him to bring that attitude to this program and relate it to our 

swimmers. He has a great coaching mind and I also look for his graduate 

work in athletic training to help out our program as well.”

WOMEN’S SWIMMING SEASON PREVIEW 

After finishing last season with the best record in five years, the University 

at Buffalo women’s swimming and diving team looks to repeat and improve 

on last year. This season, third-year head coach Andy Bashor, thinks his team 

can continue to make strides and have a powerful impact in the MAC. The 

Bulls’ squad is more experienced, but still young 

as they return just one senior and nine juniors. 

The Bulls have also recruited six newcomers to 

help fill the gaps of last season. According to 

Bashor, the team now understands what winning 

is about and knows that it takes a lot of 

hard work to earn respect. All in all, the team’s 

confidence will be evident coming off such a 

successful season, and the end result should 

be seen in the pool. 

BACKSTROKE 

UB will return a fleet of strong backstrokers, being led by lone senior, 

Rachel Sorg (Ottawa, Ontario/Canterbury), 

who placed in the top eight at the MAC Championships 

in the 100 backstroke. Junior Jessica 

Ballard (Hilton Head, SC/Hilton Head), who also 

scored points in the 100 backstroke at the MAC 

Championship meet, is likely to make an impact 

in the backstroke events this season. Caitlin Reilly 

(Brockville, Ontario/John McCrae SS), Sharkey, 

Olsen and Powalski will help the Bulls fill out the 

backstroke-line up.

A detailed look at each discipline. 

FREESTYLE 

The Bulls return a dependable group of 

sprint freestylers led by junior Sam Palma 

(Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), sophomores Jessie 

Koltz (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Valley) 

and Catherine Scharf (New Hartford, NY/New 

Hartford). They combined for two new school 

records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, along 

with Andrea Lehner and 2008 graduate Meghan 

Lafferty. 

Koltz goes into the season with the fastest 

50 freestyle time, while Palma has the fastest 

Rachel Sorg 

time in the 100 freestyle. Scharf and junior 

returnee Laura Powalski (Williamsville, NY/ 

Mount St. Mary) posted season-best marks in 

the 100-yard freestyle at the MAC meet. 

Freshman Keri Chandler (Mount Joy, 

PA/Donegal) is expected to contribute to the 

sprint races as well. Chandler was a high school 

sectional qualifier and a 2008 Pennsylvania high 

school state consolation finalist. 

Sophomore Renae Sharkey (Fords, NJ/ 

Metuchen), returns with the fastests 200 freestyle

time on the team. Sophomore Jordan Deren 

(Lackawanna, NY/Nardin Academy) returns 

as UB’s top middle-distance freestyler. Deren 

comes off an impressive freshman season, 

finishing in the top eight at the MAC Championships. 

Also coming back with distance 

experience is junior Kimberly Dale (Cary, NC/ 

Raleigh Charter), who turned in season-best 

times in both the 500 and 1,650 freestyles and 

the 400 IM at the MAC Championships. 

Sophomores Ashley Olsen (Buffalo, NY/ 

Buffalo Seminary) and Alisa Koopman (Clifton 

Park, NY/Shenendehowa) along with Sharkey 

Brynn Marecki 

are likely to contribute to the distance freestyle 

depth as well. 

DIVING 

Rounding out the distance freestylers are freshman Alison Schirmers 

(Coon Rapids, MN/Blaine), a junior qualifier and 2008 Minnesota high school 

state finalist in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM, and Amanda Reall (Orlando, 

FL/Olympia), a 2006 Florida high school state qualifier and junior national 

qualifier. 

BREASTSTROKE 

The Bulls’ breaststrokers made great strides 

last season and will look to do the same this year, as 

veteran Ashley Schaffert (Lockport, NY/Lockport) 

placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke and 13th in 

the 200 breaststroke at the MAC Championships, 

and consistently swam the breaststroke leg of UB’s 

medley relays. 

Freshman Brynn Marecki (Livonia, MI/Livonia 

Stevenson) is likely to compete with Schaffert for 

the relay spot, as she joins the Bulls after being the 

2008 Michigan high school state champion in the 

100 breaststroke and 200 IM. Marecki was also the 

2008 YMCA national championship finalist in the 

100 and 200 breaststroke and the 400 IM. 

Schirmers, Ballard and Dale also have breaststroke 

experience and were competitive in the 

breaststroke events at a few Buffalo duel meets 

last season. 

BUTTERFLY 

Veterans Sam Eckert (Eden, NY/Eden), Emily 

Day (Speedway, IN/Roncalli) and Palma will lead 

the butterfly races for the Blue and White. Eckert 

placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly at last season’s 

MAC Championship, and Palma was close 

behind, placing 16th in the same event. Look for 

Koltz, Reall, Scharf, and Koopman to make large 

strides in the butterfly events. 

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY 

Ballard is the top returnee for the 200 IM, while 

Dale will return with the fastest time in the 400 IM. 

Both athletes scored points for the Bulls in those 

events at the MAC Championship meet. A mix of 

veteran and freshman swimmers will round out 

the IM depth, including Marecki, Schirmers, Koopman 

and Reall. 

One of the strongest of UB’s events last season, the Bulls return All-MAC 

selection, and NCAA qualifier Meili Carpenter (Boulder, CO/Fairview) to 

highlight the squad. Carpenter finished fifth on the one-meter board and 

second the three-meter board at the MAC Championships. Carpenter broke 

her own records on the one- (330.75) and three-meter boards (336.20) at

duel meets during the season. She became the first woman to represent UB at 

the NCAA Division I National Championships, competing in the one- and threemeter 

springboard and platform diving events. 

Backing up Carpenter and giving the Bulls additional veteran experience 

is junior Ursula Jeske (Rothschild, WI/Monroe-Woodbury (NY)). The Bulls will 

also have freshman Stephanie Lucarelli (Merrick, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) 

to add to their roster. Lucarelli competed for five years under head coach Mark 

Ruiz for the Long Island Divers, prior to coming to UB.

2007-08 Season Notes 

UB Women’s Swimming Finish Fifth at MAC Championships 

The UB women’s swimming and diving team finished the fourday 

Mid-American Conference Championships with 341 points, giving 

them a fifth place finish, as Ohio won the team title with 679.5 points 

with Toledo (605.5) and Eastern Michigan (575) close behind. Andrea 

Lehner, a transfer from Maryland, had a strong showing at the MAC 

Championships, earning first place in the 100 backstroke, second in the 

500 freestyle, and third in the 200 backstroke, all three of which were 

new school records. Lehner was also a member of three record breaking 

relays, along with Ashley Schaffert, Sam Eckert and Sam Palma in the 

200 and 400 medley relay and Palma, Catherine Scharf and Jessie Koltz 

in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Koltz, Palma, Scharf and 2008 

graduate Meghan Lafferty placed fourth at the MAC meet and finished 

with a record breaking time of 1:34.52. Other top eight finishes at the 

MAC meet include: Eckert (6th-100 butterfly), Jordan Deren (6th-1650 

freestyle), Rachel Sorg (7th-100 backstroke) and Palma (7th-50 free). All 

of this, combined with other outstanding performances from the rest of 

the team, gave the women’s swimming and diving team their best place 

at MAC Championships since the 2001-2002 season.

2007-08 Team Award Winners 

As a result of her performances on the boards, UB diver Meili 

Carpenter became the first woman to represent UB at the NCAA Division 

I National Championships, competing in the one- and three-meter spring 

board and platform events. Carpenter was also selected to the All-MAC 

Second Team for the second year in a row, the MAC All-Academic team 

and named to the 2008 CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major All America 

first team. She also broke her own school records in the one- (330.75) 

and three-meter (336.20) events during the regular season.

MEN’S SWIMMING SEASON PREVIEW 

The new optimism of the women’s team is also being echoed among the 

UB men’s swimming and diving team. The Bulls have 10 new names to add 

to their roster, all of which are expected to make an immediate impact, and 

return a handful of veterans. The veterans come into 2008 having experienced 

an increase in competition after the Mid-American Conference combined 

with the Sun Belt Conference for their annual Championship meet. The Bulls 

finished seventh out of ten, and third among MAC 

schools, all while gaining valuable experience as 

they faced a more quality group of swimmers. 

Second-year head coach Andy Bashor is 

enthusiastic about the season and thinks the 

combination of an impressive freshman class and 

last year’s top returnees will result in a powerful 

season. 

Heading the list of returnees are backstroke 

and medley specialist Zach Ruske (Superior, 

CO/Monarch) and butterflyers Kevin 

Schuster(Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and 

Scott Woster (North Pole, AK/North Pole). 

At last season’s MAC/SunBelt Championships, 

Ruske was the conference champion in 

both the 100 and 200 backstroke as well as the 

200 IM and earned new school records in the 

200 backstroke and 200 IM at the meet. Schuster 

placed 14th overall in the 100 butterfly at the 

MAC Championship meet, making a new school 

record. In the 200 butterfly, Woster set a school 

record, placing 10th overall. 

Other All-MAC team returnees include 

junior Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British 

Columbia/ Kelowna), junior Andrew Tamchyna 

(Newmarket, Ontario/Newmarket) and diver 

Michael McDowell (Rush, NY/Rush Henrietta). 

McDowell bettered his own school records in 

the one and three-meter events and was the first 

male diver in UB history to qualify for the NCAA 

meet. 

Kevin Schuster 

Connor Vander Zalm 

and freshman Simon Proudfoot (Jacksonville, FL/Stanton College Prep) 

should have an impact in the 200 and 500 freestyles as well. Proudfoot was 

a 2007 Florida High School State Runner-up in the 200 free and placed third 

in the 100 freestyle at the Flordia state meet in 2007 as well. 

The distance freestyle events are where the Bulls lack depth, as Vander 

Zalm and Beckinghausen are UB’s lone distance swimmers. Vander Zalm 

swam a career-best time and placed 10th at 

the MAC Championships in the 1650 freestyle. 

Vander Zalm also swam a career best in the 1000 

freestyle at the MAC meet, but fell just short of 

making the finals. 

BACKSTROKE 

The backstroke events are expected to be one 

of UB’s strongest disciplines in the 2008-09 campaign, 

as they return record holder and conference 

champion, Ruske, as well as Tamchyna, who 

finished just behind Ruske at the championship 

meet. 

Freshman Jake Sangren (Ithaca, NY/Lansing) 

comes to UB with the fastest time on the roster 

and will make an immediate impact in the pool 

for the Bulls. 

BREASTSTROKE 

Sophomore Kevin Song (Ottawa, Ontario/ 

Sir Robert Borden) goes into the season with 

the fastest 200 breaststroke time, but the 100 

breaststroke is still up for grabs as UB returns 

junior Jordan Matthews (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt 

Hills-Ballston Lake) and picks up freshman 

Drew Polhill (Brewster, NY/Brewster). Matthews 

swam the breaststroke leg of the IM relays, but 

Polhill joins the Bulls with a time that is just 

tenths of a second behind Matthews. Polhill was 

a junior national qualifier and a New York high 

school state finalist in the 200 IM.

FREESTYLE 

Schuster is UB’s top returning sprinter, 

coming into the season with the top times in 

the 50 and 100-yard freestyles. Also in the sprint 

freestyle hunt are returnees Sterling Gell (Lansing, 

NY/Lansing) and Colin Wilbert (Albion, NY/ 

Albion).

BUTTERFLY 

The Bulls return two veterans in the butterfly 

races, which should be consistently good 

throughout and be the deepest of the disciplines 

for the Bulls. In the preliminary round at the 

MAC Championship meet, Woster swam the 

100 butterfly first, breaking the school record 

with a time of 50.29. In the next heat Schuster 

beat that, claiming a new school record with a 

Freshmen that are expected to make an 

time of 50.13. Both men collected points for the 

impact in the sprint freestyle events include

MEN’S SWIMMING SEASON PREVIEW 

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY 

Ruske will be expected to handle the main 

workload for the 200 IM after finishing first in 

the conference and setting a school record 

(1:52.43) at the MAC/SunBelt Championship 

meet last season. Freshmen Berloth, Polhill and 

Sangren are likely to make a big impact in the 

200 IM, as well. 

Expected to see action in the 400-yard IM 

are Vander Zalm and Tamchyna. Vander Zalm 

set UB’s fastest 400-yard IM time, last season, 

with a time of 4:07.76. 

DIVING 

The diving events return to the capable 

hands of McDowell, who broke his own UB 

records in both the one- and three-meter 

disciplines last year. McDowell earned the All- 

MAC award for the second year in a row, as he 

finished second among the MAC schools at the 

MAC/SunBelt Championship meet. McDowell 

became the first UB men’s diver and second 

male in school history to compete in the NCAA 

men’s national championships. 

Sophomore Clayton Sutton (Jamesville, 

NY/Jamesville Dewitt) finished 14th in the oneand 

three- meter events at the MAC/SunBelt 

meet. The Bulls also return sophomore Jake 

Matter (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) to the 

squad for 2008-2009. UB has two new freshmen 

divers in Colin Patrican (Ithaca, NY/ Urbana 

(MD)) and Simon Sarabura (Maple Glen, PA/ 

Upper Dublin). Patrican is a native of New York 

who moved to Maryland for his senior year. He 

was named the 2008 diver of the year for the 

Frederick County public schools. Sarabura was 

a junior national qualifier for Liberty Diving in 

the Philadelphia area.

SEASON IN REVIEW 

2007-08 Season Notes 

MAC and SunBelt Combine for Championship Meet 

Last season was the first time the Mid-American Conference 

combined with the Sun Belt Conference for their annual championship 

meet. The Bulls experienced a higher level of competition and saw a 

stronger field of opponents than ever before, which should fare well for 

them as they return to conference and local competition in the 2008- 

2009 season. The Bulls finished seventh overall and third out of the MAC 

schools, scoring 200 points. Missouri State won with 698 points, while 

Denver took second with 654. Zach Ruske was the conference champion 

in the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 IM. 

Five Bulls Earn All-MAC Honors 

Five members of the men’s swimming and diving team earned 

All-MAC recognitions at the league championships. Zach Ruske and 

Connor Vander Zalm were named to the first team, as Mike McDowell, 

Scott Woster and Andrew Tamchyna were named to the second team. 

Ruske finished first among the MAC schools in three events setting 

records in the 200 IM and 200 backstroke, while Vander Zalm finished 

third among MAC competitors in the 1650 freestyle at the championship 

meet. McDowell broke his own records, setting the UB and Alumni Arena 

Natatorium records that he had set the year before. Woster broke the 200 

butterfly record at the championship meet with a time of 1:50.81. 

Six Bulls Named to Academic All-MAC Team 

2008 grauduate Mike Hurst, junior Richard Shi and sophomores 

Michael McDowell, Kevin Song, Andrew Tamchyna and Connor 

Vander Zalm were named to the team that included 21 student-athletes 

from the four MAC schools that sponsor men’s swimming. In order to earn 

this honor the student-athlete must maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA and 

have more than one year of experience in their designated sport.

ALumni arena natatorium 

The University at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena Natatorium is home to both the 

men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams is comparable to any facility 

in the East with movable bulkheads, four springboards and four diving 

platforms, accomodations for the handicapped and gallery seating for 

1,000 spectators. 

The facility has held some of the nation’s finest swim competitions. Division 

II and III NCAA Championships, the World University Games, the Mid-Continent 

Conference Championships (three consecutive years), the Mid-American 

Conference Championships and the Empire State Games are only a few 

of the long list of prestigious meets the Natatorium has hosted. Along with 

an outstanding competition pool, there is also a world class diving well. 

Boasting a maximum depth of 18 feet and holding 500,000 gallons of water, 

it is accompanied with both 1 and 3 meter springborards and 1, 5, 7 and 

10 meter platforms. 

The pool, which is 50 meters long and 25 yards wide, holds 700,000 gallons 

of water. From April through October, the pool is set up in the long course 

format. With the ability to have blocks on both ends, the eight-lane pool is 

able to hold any long course competition. During the winter months, the 

pool is converted to short course. With a bulkhead in the middle, the pool 

can hold competitions on both ends simultaneously. This is further enhanced 

with the technology of Colorado Timing Systems. With two eightlane 

scoreboards, and the accuracy of automatic timing, this system helps 

enhance the greatness of the facility. 

UB’s Alumni Arena Natatorium is also on the cutting edge of water treatment 

technology with an ultraviolet filtration system that was installed in 

the spring of 2000. The unique system is the first of its kind to be used in a 

pool in the state of New York, and it was donated as a Gift-in -Kind to the 

University at Buffalo from Wedeco/Ideal Horizons of Poultney, VT, Environmental 

Resources Management of Pittsbord, NY and Final Filtration, Inc. of 

Amherst, NY. The system, which costs more than $55,000, uses ultraviolet 

light instead of chlorine to clean and steriize the water in the pool without 

chemicals, thereby reducing corrosion, the chlorine smell and skin irritation 

to swimmers and making the water quality in the Alumni Arena Natatorium 

cleaner and healthier. 

The Alumni Arena Natatorium hosted the 2007 Mid-American Conference 

Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships and will host the 2008 MAC 

Women’s Championships. The Natatorium’s diving facility will host the 

2008 NCAA Zone A Championships, which will send the top divers to the 

NCAA National Championships.

Providing leadership in education and in diversity, the Mid- 

American Conference moves into its 62nd year of service to the 

student-athlete. 

Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference 

has progressively grown and developed into one of the 

most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. Under 

the guidance of Commissioner Rick Chryst, the seventh 

commissioner in the history of the league, the MAC has 

responded to the ever changing landscape of membership 

issues and member standards in the fast-paced environment 

of collegiate athletics. 

The league has grown its commitment to championships by 

expanding to six its number of neutral site post season events 

– football (Detroit’s Ford Field), volleyball (Toledo’s SeaGate 

Centre), men’s and women’s basketball (Cleveland’s Quicken 

Loans Arena), softball (Akron’s Firestone Stadium) and most 

recently baseball (Chillicothe’s VA Memorial Stadium). 

MAC football produced three bowl teams in 2007, the 

giving the MAC 14 bowl berths in the past four years with 10 

different league institutions represented during that time. The 

2007 season also welcomed the addition of Temple University 

to the East Division and the Owls responded with a leagueleading 

defense and a 4-4 conference mark in their inaugural 

MAC season. A total of nine MAC football players were selected 

in the 2008 NFL draft, making it the second most selectees for 

the league since the NFL went to seven rounds in 1994. 

In its partnership with ESPN, the worldwide leader in 

sports, an unprecedented 25 football games involving MAC 

schools will be televised in 2008. That number includes regular 

season and post season events on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN 

Classic and ESPN360. In addition, an eight-game MAC Game 

of the Week will be syndicated on ESPN Plus and available on 

over-the-air network affiliates to more than 22 millions homes 

in the Midwest. 

Four Mid-American Conference men’s basketball programs 

went on to postseason play this season as Kent State (NCAA 

Tournament), Akron (National Invitation Tournament), Miami 

(College Basketball Invitational) and Ohio (College Basketball 

Invitational) all made an appearance in postseason tournaments. 

There were a total of two women’s basketball programs 

that reached the postseason as Miami (NCAA Tournament) 

and Bowling Green (Women’s NIT) represented the MAC in 

postseason play. 

Kent State men’s basketball program was ranked in the top 

25 in the regular season for the first time in school history. The 

Golden Flashes were 23rd in the Associated Press poll and 24th in 

the ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll, both of which were released 

on February 25th.The Flashes earned their 10th consecutive 

20-win season in addition to picking up the 1,000th victory in 

the 92-year history of the program. The last time the MAC had 

a team appear in the top 25 during the regular season was in 

2001 when Ball State was ranked for four straight weeks (Nov. 

26-Dec. 17), with the Cardinals climbing as high as 15th in the 

AP poll on Dec. 3. 

The Golden Flashes also made headlines in men’s golf this 

past season as KSU finished alone in sixth place at the NCAA 

Championship to earn the highest finish in the program’s storied 

history. MAC wrestlers also continued to shine on the national 

stage as Central Michigan senior 197-pounder Wynn Michalak 

finished runner-up at the NCAA Wrestling Championships and 

the Chippewas finished tied for seventh in the overall team 

competition.

Conference continues to excel in producing leaders in the 

world of athletics. 

In March of 2006, Chryst and Cleveland Cavaliers President 

Len Komoroski announced that the Mid-American Conference 

Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments would remain in 

Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena through 2011. The MAC also 

announced a format change for both tournaments, bringing 

all 12 men’s and women’s teams to Cleveland beginning in 

2007. The MAC also co-hosted the 2007 Women’s Final Four at 

Quicken Loans Arena, after successfully hosting a 2006 NCAA 

Women’s Basketball Regional at Quicken Loans Arena. 

In 2006, Chryst also announced a five-year partnership 

with ISP Sports, Inc. to oversee and coordinate the league’s 

marketing and sponsorship rights. ISP, which currently 

manages more than 40 college properties nationwide, is 

considered the leader in the collegiate sports marketing 

industry. The MAC was ISP’s first conference property. 

ISP is responsible for managing and growing the MAC’s 

stable of corporate partners, which currently includes 

FirstEnergy, Kraft, Marathon Oil, GMAC Financial Services, 

Gatorade, Automart.com and Sirius Satellite Radio. FirstEnergy 

has been the title sponsor for the men’s basketball tournament 

since its first year in Cleveland in March 2000, Kraft has been 

associated with the women’s basketball tournament since 

2001, and Marathon Oil will be sponsoring the football 

championship for the fourth time in 2008. 

Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year 

stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic 

measurements in both football and men’s and women’s 

basketball since its move to Northeast Ohio. 

The Mid-American Conference was founded as a fiveschool 

league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with 

Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve 

admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference 

has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. 

Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined 

in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at 

Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University 

(1947) , Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). 

The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), 

Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan 

University (1971), Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), 

University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University 

(1947). 

In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competitive sport 

in the MAC, which now sponsors a total of 23 sports. Women’s 

sports were brought into the conference’s structure in 1980. 

For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, 

basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and 

diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, 

wrestling, golf and tennis. 

For women, championships (12) are sponsored in 

basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, 

golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track 

and field, outdoor track and tennis.
