Senior MariMcClure (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) finished with 14 pointson the night, becoming just the 12th <strong>UB</strong> women's basketball player ofall-time to surpass the 1,000-career point pl<strong>at</strong>eau. She now has 1,005career points.The game began as a shooting frenzy, with <strong>Buffalo</strong> hitting 51.7percent of its shots (15-of-29) and Northern Illinois connecting on 58.3percent of its shots (14-of-24) in the first half. There were six leadchanges in the half, but neither team could get ahead by more than fivepoints, and a three-pointer by junior Jana Richtrova (Benesov U Prahy,Czech Republic/Genesee Community College) with one minute on theclock gave <strong>Buffalo</strong> a slight 32-30 advantage <strong>at</strong> halftime. The Huskiescame out determined in the second half and they shut the Bulls downdefensively, allowing just four <strong>UB</strong> field goals in the final 20 minutes ofthe game. NIU led for the entire second half, although never by morethan nine points. The Huskies scored the first eight points of the half,and they held <strong>Buffalo</strong> without a field goal for the first five minutes and26 seconds. Following the game, Bulls’ head coach Cheryl Doziercommented, “If there's a bright spot tonight, it was JessicaKochendorfer. She really stepped up and played well for us."Kochendorfer is averaging 7.4 points and 4.6 rebounds pergame so far this season, but when looking <strong>at</strong> MAC games only, heraverages jump up to 10.9 points and 6.3 rebounds. Kochendorferhas started 10 games this year, including all eight conferencecontests. She leads the Bulls with 21 blocks on year, tying her forthird on the MAC’s blocks per game chart (1.11). Kochendorferhas recorded <strong>at</strong> least one block in 11 of <strong>UB</strong>'s 19 games thisseason. She scored 24 pointsand grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in <strong>Buffalo</strong>'s 70-63 winover visiting <strong>Marshall</strong> on Wednesday, January 24 before explodingfor a game-high 36 points to lead the Bulls to a 77-74 overtimevictory <strong>at</strong> Bowling Green on S<strong>at</strong>urday, January 27. Bell hit 59% ofher shots from the field (23-of-39) and 78% of her shots from thefoul line (14-of-18) for the week. She tied her career high with 12field goals against the Falcons, and her 36 points were just one shyof tying her career high.With 72 points in her last three games, Bell has moved intosecond place all-time on <strong>UB</strong>'s career scoring chart with 1,453career points. She has scored 1,244 points since <strong>Buffalo</strong> has beena member of the MAC, ranking her 57th all-time on theconference's career scoring chart. Bell also recently became <strong>UB</strong>'sall-time leader in career field goals made (536). She leads the Bullsand is second in the MAC with a scoring average of 17.8, and sheis tied for ninth in the conference with 7.2 rebounds per game.Bell on the Career ChartsWith a team-leading 96 free throws this season, senior TiffanyBell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) has moved into sole possession offirst place all-time in career free throws made <strong>at</strong> <strong>UB</strong> with 374. She isalso making a run <strong>at</strong> <strong>UB</strong>’s career free throws <strong>at</strong>tempted record. With523, she is currently in second place all-time, behind CharissaGardner (1994-98, 550 career free throw <strong>at</strong>tempts). Bell also tookover first place all-time in career field goals made last week (536),and she has moved into second-place all-time on <strong>UB</strong>’s career scoringchart with 1,453 career points. Bell is 250 points behind <strong>UB</strong>’s alltimecareer scoring leader Brenna Doty (1,703 points, 1993-97). Shewould have to average 31.3 points in <strong>Buffalo</strong>’s eight remainingregular season games to c<strong>at</strong>ch Doty. Bell is currently averaging <strong>at</strong>eam-high 17.8 points per game. With the Bulls leading by one, 71-70, with just over 30 secondsremaining in the game, Ortega stole a BGSU inbounds pass and fed freshmanVirginia Jennings (Nashville, MI/Hastings) for an easy layup th<strong>at</strong> put the gameaway for <strong>UB</strong>. While Ortega plays a complete all-around game, she makes herpresence known the most with steals and assists, and she is continuously movingup <strong>UB</strong>’s career charts in both of those c<strong>at</strong>egories.Ortega recorded a career-high nine steals against Kent St<strong>at</strong>e on Wednesday,January 10, and she has a team-high 50 steals on the season (2.78 per game).Her career high followed a game against Akron on January 6 during which shedid not have any steals, marking the first time in 47 games th<strong>at</strong> she did not have asteal. Ortega had <strong>at</strong> least one steal in the last five games of the 1998-99 season,in all 29 games last season and in the first 12 games this season, a streak of 46games. The last time before the Akron game th<strong>at</strong> she didn't have <strong>at</strong> least one stealwas on February 6, 1999, a 73-71 <strong>Buffalo</strong> win <strong>at</strong> Ohio.Ortega currently stands in fourth place all-time in career steals <strong>at</strong> <strong>UB</strong> with222. Last year, she finished with the sixth-highest single-season steals total inschool history with 82. A repe<strong>at</strong> of th<strong>at</strong> performance would make her <strong>UB</strong>'s alltimeleader in career steals <strong>at</strong> the end of her senior season. Lorrie Drennen(1989-93) currently holds the top spot with 253 career steals.Ortega is also leading the Bulls in assists this season with 83 (4.61 per game).She currently stands in third place all-time in career assists <strong>at</strong> <strong>UB</strong> with 397. The Bulls adjusted well to theEuropean style of play which is much more fast-paced withshorter stoppages in play. They played with either a 24-secondshot clock or a 30-second shot clock, with a larger basketballand in quarters instead of halves. The opposition ranged in agefrom 15 to 33 years old.
