TheTar Heels entered the game ranked 22nd inthe nation in the AP poll and 25th in thenation in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCAcoaches’ poll. Buffalo shot 85 percent fromthe free throw line, including 13-of-14 in thefinal 1:34 of the game. The win was theBulls’ 400th all-time in the history of thewomen’s basketball program and it came infront of a record-setting 4,017 fans, the mostever to attend a women's basketball game atUB's Alumni Arena.The Bulls held a 39-37 lead at halftimeand McClure and fellow senior Tiffany Bellcombined for 26 of their final 27 points tosecure the win. The Bulls countered that comebackwith 10 unanswered points, six straight byMcClure, to take their largest lead of thenight, 55-45 with 11:17 remaining. ThePurple Eagles continued battling, however,and they led by one on two separateoccasions late in the game, 65-64 with 2:28remaining and 67-66 with 1:07 remaining.A jumper and two free throws by McCluregave Buffalo the lead back both times, andshe hit five of her six free throw attempts inthe final minute of play to secure the Bulls'win.McClure finished the night shooting10-of-13 from the foul line. With her 21 points, Bellmoved into third place all-time in scoringat UB with 1,179 career points.The Bulls jumped out to an early lead,scoring the first 12 points of the game enroute to a 33-20 halftime lead that theGriffs, playing in their season opener,could not overcome. Buffalo shot slightlybetter from the floor (27-for-63 comparedto 21-for-67 for Canisius), and the Bullsoutrebounded the Griffs by a 49-40margin. Senior Sonia Ortega tied hercareer high with a game-high 13 rebounds,and freshman Jessica Kochendorfergrabbed nine boards. University at Buffalo 2000-01 Game SummariesGame 4November 29, 2000Buffalo 71, Albany 56Attendance: 594The Bulls kept their unblemished recordintact with a 71-56 win over visiting Albany,led by senior Tiffany Bell, who scored agame-high 23 points and grabbed eightrebounds.The Bulls never trailed in the game, andthey led by as many as 24 points in thesecond half following a layup by freshmanJessica Kochendorfer with 8:28 left in thegame. Buffalo struggled at times bothoffensively and defensively, committing 18turnovers and allowing the Great Danes toshoot an improved 41.5% from the floor andscore 56 points. Albany entered the gameshooting 31.1% and averaging 49.2 points inits first five contests. The Bullsoutrebounded the Great Danes by a 39-31margin and shot slightly better from the floor(43.6%).Senior Mari McClure added nine points,and senior Sonia Ortega finished the nightwith eight points, eight rebounds, five assistsand three steals. The Bulls entered the gamewith an all-time record of 0-6 in gamesplayed at the Beeghly Center and an alltimerecord of 3-10 against the Penguins.They held YSU to just 54 points on its homecourt, marking the Penguins’ lowest homegame point total since the 1993-94 season.Bell scored 14 of her team-leading 20points and Ortega scored 12 of her 15points in the first half to get the Bulls out toa 38-24 halftime lead. The Bulls closed outthe half with a 10-2 run, allowing just oneYSU basket in the final 5:28. McClurescored seven of the Bull's first 12 points inthe first five minutes of the second half, andshe finished the game with 13 points andfive assists.
