With the Bulls leading by one, 71-70, with just over 30 secondsremaining in the game, Ortega stole a BGSU inbounds pass and fed freshmanVirginia Jennings (Nashville, MI/Hastings) for an easy layup that put the gameaway for UB. While Ortega plays a complete all-around game, she makes herpresence known the most with steals and assists, and she is continuously movingup UB’s career charts in both of those categories.Ortega recorded a career-high nine steals against Kent State on Wednesday,January 10, and she has a team-high 50 steals on the season (2.78 per game). Her career high followed a game against Akron on January 6 during which shedid not have any steals, marking the first time in 47 games that she did not have asteal. Ortega had at least one steal in the last five games of the 1998-99 season,in all 29 games last season and in the first 12 games this season, a streak of 46games. The last time before the Akron game that she didn't have at least one stealwas on February 6, 1999, a 73-71 Buffalo win at Ohio.Ortega currently stands in fourth place all-time in career steals at UB with222. Last year, she finished with the sixth-highest single-season steals total inschool history with 82. A repeat of that performance would make her UB's alltimeleader in career steals at the end of her senior season. Lorrie Drennen(1989-93) currently holds the top spot with 253 career steals.Ortega is also leading the Bulls in assists this season with 83 (4.61 per game). She currently stands in third place all-time in career assists at UB with 397. Lastseason, Ortega set a UB single-season record with 188 assists.Ortega is averaging 7.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game this season. Sherecorded her first double-double of the year on January 3 at Miami (OH), tyingher career high with 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.Perrier For ThreeSenior co-captain Tara Perrier (Aurora, Ontario/Aurora) likes to shoot thethree, and it shows in her stat line. Of Perrier’s 97 shots on the year, 70 of them,or 72%, have been three-point attempts, and of her 31 baskets, 22 of them, or71%, have been three-pointers. Perrier is 22-of-70 from three-point range (.314),but she has taken just 27 shots from inside the three-point arc (9-of-27, .333) sofar this season. Perrier currently stands in sixth place all-time in career threepointersat UB with 62, just one away from tying Lynette Bubel (1989-93) for fifthplace with 63 career three-pointers.Overtime OmenBuffalo’s overtime game against Bowling Green on January 27 was the Bulls'first of the year, but they are bound to have another one before season's end ifhistory has anything to do with it. Buffalo has played two overtime games ineach of head coach Cheryl Dozier's first two seasons, going 1-1 each year.Buffalo has an 11-9 all-time record in overtime games, including 4-2 over thelast four seasons (1997-98 to 2000-01) after not playing any overtime games inthe previous four seasons (1993-94 to 1996-97).Nine Bulls Named UB Scholar-AthletesNine members of the UB women's basketball team were named scholarathletes for the Fall 2000 semeseter, helping the Bulls post the third-highest teamgrade point average at UB (3.159).
