Paul Vecchio handling the color commentary. In addition to
the 10 regular-season games, any Mid-American Conference
Tournament games the Bulls play in will also be broadcast on
Quick Bits
• The Bulls dropped to 3-15 overall and 1-6 in the MAC with a 73-69 loss at Ohio on
Saturday afternoon. The loss was Buffalo’s fifth straight.
Sophomore Belinda Gibb
had a career day, leading the Bulls with career highs of 19 points, nine field goals,
nine rebounds, six assists and two blocked shots.
• The Bulls were without senior Talia Merlino (recovering from surgery on a broken
nose) and junior Brooke Meunier (hamstring) for their game at Ohio on Saturday.
Both are expected to dress for tonight’s game against Akron.
• A win for the Bulls tonight would be a nice present for freshman Flynn Pyykkonen
who will celebrate her 19th birthday on Wednesday.
• Senior Allison Bennett enters tonight’s game just nine points away from the 700-
point mark for her career.
• Five of Buffalo’s six returning letterwinners have set career highs in scoring so far
this season – seniors Allison Bennett (21 vs. Miami) and Talia Merlino (13 vs. Akron),
juniors Brooke Meunier (25 vs. Niagara) and Amy Kucheran (8 vs. Canisius) and
sophomore Belinda Gibb (19 vs. Ohio). The only exception is junior Lauren Burd,
who has seen limited playing time after joing the team in January to give the Bulls
more depth at the post after competing on Buffalo’s volleyball team in the fall.
• Freshman Flynn Pyykkonen became the third Buffalo player to have a 20-point
game this season when she scored a career-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting
off the bench to lead the Bulls’ effort in their 81-60 loss at Toledo last Wednesday.
Pyykkonen’s performance marked the first time a UB freshman scored 20 or more
points since March 3, 2001 when Virginia Jennings scored 20 versus Akron in the first
round of the MAC Tournament. Pyykkonen’s 22 points are also the most scored by a
UB freshman since February 19, 2000 when Kim Kilpela netted 33 against Marshall.
Pyykkonen added 13 points at Ohio on Saturday, giving her a 17.5 ppg scoring
average for the week. She entered the week averaging just 3.3 ppg in the first 16
games of the season.
• Freshman Heather Turner has scored in double figures in five of the last six games
and in a team-leading 11 games so far this season. She is currently averaging 10.3
points per game, second on the team and 21st in the Mid-American Conference. If
Turner maintains her scoring touch, she will become the first player since Kim Kilpela
to average double digits in scoring during her freshman campaign at UB. Kilpela
averaged 10.3 points per game as a freshman in 1999-2000. Turner also leads the
team in rebounding (7.1 per game, 11th in the MAC) and field goal percentage (.561,
78-for-139, first in the MAC).
• The Bulls have scored the first bucket in the game just five times this season. In their
other 13 games to date, the Bulls have given up 65 points (5.0 per game) to their
opponent before getting on the board themselves. Niagara opened up the biggest
lead, 10-0, to start the game
on December 11, while Connecticut, Oakland and Akron
all opened up 9-0 leads before allowing Buffalo to score.
Scouting the Zips
After starting the year 0-15, the Zips have won three of their last four games to improve
to 3-16 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference. Their three conference wins
are the most they have had since the 2000-01 season when they finished 3-13 in
the league. Akron is coming off
back-to-back wins over Miami (49-47) and Western
Michigan (74-70). Sophomore Jessie Crooks had 21 points in the Zips’ last outing
against WMU, and she was named MAC East Player of the Week on Monday. She
leads the team with 9.5 points per game, 10.8 in MAC games only.
Senior Jae Conn
is chipping in 8.2 points per game and has 24 three-pointers on the year, and junior
Angie Hutchinson is averaging a team-high 4.8 rebounds per game.
Head coach Kelly Kennedy is in her third season at Akron where she has compiled
a 12-63 overall record to date. Kennedy came to Akron after a nine-year assistant
coaching career at Southwestern (1993-94), Oregon (1994-96), Texas Christian (1996-
99) and Iowa State (1999-2002). While at Iowa State, she helped lead the Cyclones
to two Big 12 championship titles and to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
Kennedy was a four-year letterwinner at Case Western Reserve where she still ranks
fourth in career scoring and seventh in career rebounding.
The Last Meeting:
Bulls Drop 71-63 Decision at Akron
The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team got itself in too big of a hole
that it could not climb out of despite a gutsy second-half comeback attempt
led by senior Talia Merlino that came up short in a 71-63 loss to the Akron
Zips at James A. Rhodes Arena in the first meeting of the season between
these two teams on January 19.
A hungry Akron squad came out looking for its first win of the season and
quickly jumped out to a 9-0 lead while the Bulls missed their first six shots
from the floor in the game’s first four minutes. Back-to-back three-pointers by
Jae Conn gave the Zips their biggest lead of the half at 17 points, 25-8, with
7:46 on the clock, and they took a 35-21 lead into the lockerroom at halftime
following a three at the buzzer by Courtney Stewart. The Zips shot 45.2 percent
from the floor in the first half (14-for-31), including 6-for-17 from three-point
range, while the Bulls made just 9-of-26 shots (34.6 percent).
Junior Brooke Meunier scored seven points during a 9-3 Buffalo run to open
the second half that cut Akron’s lead to eight, 38-30, with 16:42 to play. The
Zips responded with a 15-3 run to go up by 20, 53-33, at the 10:13 mark, but
the Bulls would not give up quite yet. Merlino came off the bench and hit three
straight three-pointers for a 9-0 UB run, and she scored four more points as the
run extended to 15-4 to cut the Bulls’ deficit to nine, 57-48, with 5:35 on the
clock. The Bulls kept chipping away, and a jumper by senior Allison Bennett
with 2:04 remaining got them within six, 63-57. Sophomore Belinda Gibb
later dribbled the length of the court for an easy layup with exactly 1:00 on
the clock that got Buffalo within four, 65-61, but the Zips made 8-of-10 free
throws in the final two minutes of the game to hold on for the victory.
The Bulls had five players finish in double figures in scoring for the first time
since the 2002-03 season, led by Merlino and Gibb with a team-high 13 points
apiece. The 13 points is a career high for Merlino, and she also hit a careerhigh
four three-pointers in the game. Bennett and freshman Heather Turner
added 11 points apiece, and Meunier finished with 10 points and six assists.
The Bulls were 24-for-59 from the floor (40.7 percent) and 7-for-23 from threepoint
range (30.4 percent) in the game.
rebounds. Akron outrebounded the Bulls by a slim 38-36 margin.
The Last Time Out:
Bulls Comeback Falls Short at Ohio, 73-69
The University at Buffalo women’s basketball team battled back from a 21-point second-half
deficit to get within two with under a minute to play before time ran out, giving the host Ohio
Bobcats a 73-69 win on Saturday afternoon at The Convocation Center in Athens, OH. Sophomore
Belinda Gibb had a career day with career highs of 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists to
lead the Bulls’ attack.
The Bobcats led by 13 at halftime, 37-24, and opened the second stanza with a 12-4 run to take
their largest lead of the game, 49-28, with 14:36 on the clock. The Bulls gradually chipped away
before a layup by freshman Flynn Pyykkonen at the 7:46 mark started an 11-2 Buffalo run. The
run included back-to-back three-pointers by senior Allison Bennett and a three-pointer by
Pyykkonen, and eventually cut the Bulls’ deficit to seven, 64-57, with 4:35 to play.
Ohio’s Ciara Iglehart answered with a three-pointer to put the Bobcats back up by double digits,
but two free throws by Bennett and layups by freshman Heather Turner and Gibb resulted in
a 6-0 UB swing that got Buffalo within four, 67-63, with 1:23 on the clock. A three-point play by
Turner then got the Bulls within three, 69-66, with 40 seconds to play, and the Bulls were forced to
foul. Following two free throws by OU’s Angel Hornsburger, Gibb dribbled the length of the court
and kicked the ball out to Pyykkonen for a three that made the score 71-69 with 32 seconds to
go. Hornsburger was fouled again, and she made her first shot and missed her second, but Erin
Isbell grabbed the offensive board and drew another foul. She missed her first shot but made her
second with 24.9 on the clock to make it a two-possession game, and the Bulls missed one final
shot on their last possession of the game before time expired.
The first half went back and forth for the first six minutes before Ohio gradually pulled away
by pounding the ball inside to Kristian Kirkpatrick and Isbell, who finished the half with 11 and
10 points, respectively. The Bobcats shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the first half (16-for-32)
compared to the Bulls’ 31. 4 percent (11-for-35). Kirkpatrick and Iglehart finished with a team-high
16 points while Isbell added 15 for the Bobcats while also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Gibb led all scorers with 19 points, 11 in the second half, and Bennett finished with 14 points and a
career-high six assists. Pyykkonen added 13 points and a career-high seven rebounds, and Turner
added 11 points and nine boards. The Bulls shot 63.0 percent from the floor in the second half
(17-for-27) and 45.2 percent for the game (28-for-62), while Ohio was 13-for-28 in the second half
(46.4 percent) and 29-for-60 for the game (48.3 percent). Buffalo finished the game with a 41-29
advantage on the glass.
Roster Notes
Junior Lauren Burd joined the team prior to the January 2 game against East Carolina after
competing with UB’s volleyball team in the fall. Burd played basketball as a freshman at UB in
2002-03, averaging 1.1 points and 1.5 rebounds in 20 games, before switching to volleyball in her
sophomore season. She also joined the basketball team mid-season in 2003-04, averaging 2.6
points and 2.7 rebounds in seven games. She entered this season with career averages of 1.4 points
and 1.8 rebounds in 27 games. In other roster updates, sophomore Dina Atanas is redshirting
the 2004-05 season as she is still recovering from off-season surgery on her shins, and junior Erin
Lawrenson has chosen to end her career after battling chronic ankle problems for the past two
years. Senior Tahcahrah Owens has been dismissed from the team for academic reasons.
International Flavor
With six international student-athletes on their roster, the Bulls unofficially have the second-highest
number of international players out of all Division I schools, trailing only Florida International which
has seven. The information was compiled by the Utah Sports Information Office. Buffalo’s roster
includes players from Australia (Belinda Gibb), Canada (Dina Atanas, Amy Kucheran), the Czech
Republic (Barbora Homolová), Finland (Viorica Badinici) and Mexico (Diana Orozco Gollaz).
2004-05 BUFFALO BASKETBALL
Bennett Keeps Streak Going
Senior Allison Bennett made her 74th consecutive start in the
Blue and White in the Bulls’ last outing at Ohio on Saturday.
Bennett has started every game each of the past three seasons
(18 in 2004-05, 27 in 2003-04 and 29 in 2002-03). She started
23 of 28 games during her freshman campaign, the first 17 of
the season and six of the final 11.
Turner Turns Some Heads
Freshman Heather Turner has made her presence felt in the
Bulls’ lineup, leading the team in scoring four times and in
rebounding in 11 games, including nine of the last 14, so far
this season. Turner reached double digits in scoring for the first
time in her career with 12 points at Holy Cross on November
21, and she recorded her first career double-double with a
team-high 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds against
Maine on December 4.
Turner followed that performance with
game highs of 19 points and eight rebound at Bucknell on
December 7, and then had her second double-double of the
season with 13 points and 16 rebounds, including 10 offensive,
in an overtime loss to Niagara on December 11. On December
18 at Canisius, Turner posted her third double-double of the
year with 14 points and 12 boards. She is currently averaging
10.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. She leads the team
and the Mid-American Conference with a .561 field goal
percentage (78-for-139).
Scoring Milestones
Five returning letterwinners have set career highs in scoring
so far this season, highlighted by junior Brooke Meunier’s
career-high 25 points on a career-high nine field goals and a
career-high five three-pointers against Niagara on December
11. Meunier’s five three-pointers in the game marked the first
time a Buffalo player has had five or more threes in a game since
Erin Lawrenson drained six against Toledo on January 22, 2003.
Senior Allison Bennett had a career-high 21 points against
Miami (OH) on January 12, and sophomore Belinda Gibb had
a career-high 19 points at Ohio on January 29. Senior Talia
Merlino set a career high with 13 points at Akron on January
19, and junior Amy Kucheran had a career-high eight points
at Canisius on December 18.
Notable among the newcomers, freshman Heather Turner was
9-for-10 from the floor with a season-high 19 points at Bucknell
on December 7, and freshman Stephanie Bennett scored a
career-high 18 points, including four three-pointers, against
Miami (OH) on January 12. Freshman Flynn Pyykkonen had
a breakout game at Toledo on January 26, scoring a seasonhigh
22 points on 9-for-13 shooting. Pyykkonen’s performance
marked the first time a UB freshman has scored 20 or more
points since March 3, 2001 when Virginia Jennings scored 20
versus Akron in the first round of the MAC Tournament. Her 22
points are the most scored by a UB freshman since February 19,
2000 when Kim Kilpela netted 33 against Marshall.
Offensive Spurt
The Bulls’ 80-61 win over Miami on January 12 marked the
most points the Bulls have scored in a game since an 86-80
overtime win at Youngstown State on December 18, 2002. In
addition, they outscored the RedHawks by a 45-34 margin in
the second half, marking the most points they scored in a half
2004-05 BUFFALO BASKETBALL
since December 13, 2003 when they put 52 on the board in the second half
of an 87-75 loss at Niagara (The Bulls equalled that mark with 45 points
in the second half at Ohio on January 29). The Bulls also hit twice their
season average for three-pointers in a game with eight against Miami.
Buffalo finished the game 8-for-12 from behind the arc, with four of the
threes coming from freshman Stephanie Bennett. The .667 three-point
shooting percentage is the best team performance in the MAC this season,
and the eight threes are the most the Bulls have scored in a game since
going 8-for-16 at Kent State on February 11, 2004.
Five Reach Double Figures
The Bulls had five players score in double figures in their loss at Akron on
January 19 – senior Talia Merlino and sophomore Belinda Gibb with 13
apiece, senior Allison Bennett and freshman Heather Turner with 11
apiece and junior Brooke Meunier with 10 - marking the first time since
December 8, 2002 versus Howard that the Bulls had five players reach
double digits in scoring in a game. Merlino, playing with a broken nose
suffered in practice the day before, came off the bench in the second half
and hit three straight three-pointers for a 9-0 Buffalo run and then added
four more points as the run extended to 15-4 midway through the second
half. Her 13 points are a career high, and she finished the game with four
three-pointers, tying her career high.
Crashing the Boards
The Bulls outrebounded Niagara by a 62-43 margin on December 11,
marking the most rebounds the Bulls have recorded in a game since
December 29, 1999 when they pulled down 64 boards in an 81-53 win
over Florida Atlantic. Four Bulls grabbed career highs in rebounds, led by
freshman Heather Turner with 16. Turner’s team-leading 16 rebounds
marked the first time in almost a year that a Buffalo player grabbed 15 or
more boards in a game (Kim Kilpela had 15 rebounds, also versus Niagara,
on December 13, 2003). Buffalo has outrebounded its oppenents in eight
of 18 games so far this season.
Double Double-Double
Senior Allison Bennett recorded her first career double-double against
Niagara on December 11 with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Freshman Heather Turner posted the second double-double of her
young career with 13 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, marking
the first time since the 2002-03 season that two Buffalo players posted a
double-double in the same game. The last time that happened before the
Niagara game was on February 16, 2003 versus Western Michigan when
Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Kim Kilpela
had 15 points and 11 boards.
Stingy Defense
The Bulls held East Carolina to just 16 first-half points on January 2 to take
a 30-16 halftime lead. The 16 points are the fewest the Bulls have allowed
in a half this year and the fewest since the 2002-03 season when they held
both Cornell (January 20) and Akron (January 28) to 16 first-half points. The
14-point halftime lead is the Bulls’ largest since February 19, 2003 when they
led Ohio by 18 at the half, 46-28.
Getting Thrown Into the Fire
Only three players who played in the 2003-04 season opener versus Canisius
(Allison Bennett, Talia Merlino and Brooke Meunier) and four players
who played in the 2003-04 season finale against Marshall (Bennett, Merlino,
Meunier and Belinda Gibb) saw action in this season’s opener at defending
national champion Connecticut. Most impressive among the group making
their collegiate debuts was freshman Stephanie Bennett who had a teamhigh
10 points and a team-high five assists in 34 minutes. Freshman Heather
Turner scored the Bulls’ first bucket in the game and finished with six points
and a team-high five rebounds in 12 minutes of action.
Sister Act
Dozier Adds Alum to Staff
Over the summer, head coach Cheryl Dozier added one of her former
players, Kim Coon, to her staff as an administrative assistant/video
coordinator for the 2004-05 season. Coon spent the past three seasons
as an assistant coach at Colgate, where she helped lead the Raiders to
their first-ever NCAA appearance in 2004 where they lost to eventual
national finalist Tennessee in the opening round. Coon was a four-year
letterwinner at UB, with her senior season (1998-99) being Dozier’s
first season with the Bulls. Coon currently ranks 12th on UB’s all-time
scoring list (1,038 career points), second in both career three-point field
goals made (140) and career three-point field goals attempted (348),
third in career three-point field goal percentage (40.2) and fourth in
career free throw percentage (74.3).
Head Coach Cheryl Dozier
Head coach Cheryl Dozier is in her seventh season at Buffalo with an
overall record of 88-98 entering tonight’s game against Akron. She
earned her 80th career win on December 3, 2003 against Youngstown
State (68-58), giving her the second-most wins of all coaches in UB
women’s basketball history, trailing only Sal Buscaglia who compiled
155 wins in eight seasons with the Bulls (1990-98). Dozier has guided
the Bulls to four winning seasons, to two record-setting starts and to
national rankings in both offensive and defensive statistical categories
during her tenure. Prior to taking over the reins as the 10th head
coach in UB women’s basketball history, Dozier served as an assistant
coach at Michigan State (1993-98), Ohio (1991-93) and Lake Superior
to the postseason last year: Connecticut (NCAA), Maine (NCAA), Eastern
Michigan (NCAA), Kent State (WNIT), Miami (OH) (WNIT) and Western
Michigan (WNIT). In the latest conference RPI rating, released on January
30, the Mid-American Conference is ranked 20th out of the 31 conferences
in Division I.
Bulls Sign Four During Early Period
Buffalo head coach Cheryl Dozier signed four players to National Letters of
Intent during the November signing period. They are: Rayna Brown (5-8, G,
Montclair, NJ/Montclair), Dortae Freeman (G, 5-9, Detroit, MI/Cass Technical),
Rachelle Matthys (5-9, G, St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) and Jamie Schiebner (6-0,
F, Saginaw, MI/Heritage). All four will continue their academic and athletic
team. She averages 15 points, six rebounds and eight assists per game and
is ranked sixth by Prep Sports among Public School League (PSL) seniors.
This past season, she led her team to a third-place finish in the PSL. Matthys
is an All-State guard who recently led her team to a 27-1 overall record and
an appearance in the Class B state championship game. The Saints won their
third straight Class B district title in 2004 and were the second-ranked team
in the state in Class B. Matthys, 5-9, is an All-Area, All-Conference, All-State
Game Summaries
GAME 1: #4/4 CONNECTICUT 107, BUFFALO 40
November 19, 2004 • Storrs, CT • Attendance: 10,167
The defending national champion Connecticut
Huskies shot 64.2 percent from the floor in the game
and scored 58 points in the paint to easily defeat the
University at Buffalo women’s basketball team, 107-
40, in the season opener for both teams in a sold-out
Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies had five players in
double figures in scoring, led by preseason Naismith
Trophy candidate Ann Strother with 20, including four
three-pointers. The Huskies used first-half runs of
19-0 and 14-0 to take a 51-15 halftime lead, and they
opened the second half with a 20-4 run en route to the
67-point victory. The Bulls got a spark off the bench
from two freshmen in the first half when Stephanie
Bennett dished the ball under the basket to Heather
Turner for an easy layup for the Bulls’ first bucket of
the game. Turner then grabbed a defensive rebound
and Bennett knocked down a three-pointer to make
the score 9-5 just over four minutes into the game.
Bennett finished with team highs of 10 points and
five assists while Turner grabbed a team-high five
rebounds in her collegiate debut.
GAME 2: HOLY CROSS 73, BUFFALO 42
November 21, 2004 • Worcester, MA • Attendance: 1,059
The Bulls struggled offensively and committed 29
costly turnovers in a 73-42 loss at Holy Cross in the
second game of the season. Three Bulls scored in
double figures in the game, led by junior Brooke
Meunier with 14 points, and Buffalo outrebounded
the Crusaders by a 38-36 margin, but it was not enough
as the Bulls fell to 0-2 on the year. The Crusaders began
the game on a 15-2 run and put it out of reach with
a 13-0 run early in the second half. The Bulls found
themselves in foul trouble early on in each half, and
the Crusaders finished 20-for-29 from the free throw
line while Buffalo was just 4-for-8. Meunier (14), senior
Allison Bennett (12) and freshman Heather Turner
(12) combined for 38 of the Bulls’ 42 points in the game.
Turner led the Bulls on the glass for the second straight
game with a team-high seven rebounds, along with
junior Amy Kucheran.
GAME 3: BUFFALO 54, LAFAYETTE 45
November 27, 2004 • Buffalo, NY (HSBC Arena) • Attendance: 1,327
The Bulls picked up their first win of the year over
Lafayette, 54-45, in front of 1,327 fans at HSBC Arena
led by team highs of 13 points and seven rebounds
from sophomore Viorica Badinici. The Bulls used
an 8-0 run midway through the first half, holding the
Leopards scoreless for over six minutes, to take a 17-10
lead en route to a 22-17 halftime lead. That cushion
would be enough as the Bulls didn’t relinquish their
lead for the remainder of the game. The Bulls shot 40.9
percent from the floor in the game (18-for-44) with all
nine players who saw action in the game scoring at
least two points and grabbing at least one rebound.
Freshman Stephanie Bennett added nine points, five
rebounds and four steals, and freshman Diana Orozco
Gollaz had six points and five rebounds.
GAME 10: OAKLAND 93, BUFFALO 54
December 21, 2004 • Rochester, MI • Attendance: 545
Junior Brooke Meunier scored a team-high 17
points and freshman Heather Turner added 16
points, but Oakland shot 53.6 percent from the floor,
including 50.0 percent from three-point range, to
earn a convincing 93-54 win over the Bulls in their
last game before the New Year. The Golden Grizzlies
jumped out to a 9-0 lead less than two minutes
into the game and then extended their lead to 14-
2 at the 17:19 mark and to 21-7 at the 15:53 mark.
Turner scored the Bulls’ first seven points in the game
before freshman Stephanie Bennett knocked down
a three-pointer with 15:37 on the clock that started a
7-0 UB run that got Buffalo within seven, 21-14, with
13:51 to play in the half. However, the Bulls’ offense
then went cold, missing its next seven shots while
Oakland put together a 9-0 run to go up by 16, 30-14,
with 10:18 to play. The Golden Grizzlies led by 29 at
halftime, 55-26, and they started the second half with
GAME 11: BUFFALO 50, EAST CAROLINA 48
January 2, 2005 • Buffalo, NY • Attendance: 243
A three-pointer by junior Brooke Meunier with 1:16
left on the clock broke a 47-47 tie, and the Bulls were
able to hang on for a 50-48 win over the visiting East
Carolina Pirates for their second win of the season. The
Bulls held a 14-point lead at halftime, 30-16, and then
went up by 17, 33-16, at the 17:15 mark of the second
half. The Bulls’ offense hit a dry spell later in the half,
going 0-for-15 from the floor in a span of 12:40, and
the Pirates used runs of 12-0 and 9-0 during the stretch,
eventually taking a 47-45 lead on a three-pointer by
Viola Cooper with 2:37 on the clock. Meunier then
hit a driving layup to tie the score at 47-47 at the 2:09
mark, and her third three-pointer of the night gave the
Bulls the lead for good. ECU’s Jennifer Jackson missed
back-to-back three-pointers in the final minute before
being fouled on her third attempt with four seconds to
play. She missed the first shot, made the second and
purposely missed the third, but Shanita Sutton could
not convert a layup under the basket as time expired
after grabbing the offensive rebound. Meunier led
three players in double figures in scoring for the Bulls
with a game-high 17 points.
GAME 15: AKRON 71, BUFFALO 63
January 19, 2005 • Akron, OH • Attendance: 205
The Bulls got themselves in too big of a hole that
they could not climb out of despite a gutsy secondhalf
comeback attempt led by senior Talia Merlino
that came up short in a 71-63 loss to the Akron Zips.
Akron, hungry for its first win of the season, jumped
out to a 9-0 lead and led by 14 at halftime, 35-21.
Trailing by 20 midway through the second half, 53-
33, Merlino came off the bench and hit three straight
three-pointers for a 9-0 UB run, and she scored four
more points as the run extended to 15-4 to cut the
Bulls’ deficit to nine, 57-48, with 5:35 on the clock. The
Bulls kept chipping away and got as close as four,
65-
61, but the Zips made 8-of-10 free throws in the final
two minutes of the game to hold on for the victory.
The Bulls had five players finish in double figures in
scoring for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
Merlino set a career high and sophomore Belinda
Gibb tied her career high with 13 points apiece.
Freshman Flynn Pyykkonen had a breakout game
with a career-high 22 points off the bench, but the
Toledo Rockets built a 16-point first-half lead en route
to an easy 81-60 win over the Bulls in front of 2,233
fans in Savage Hall. Danielle Bishop hit back-to-back
three-pointers to start an 18-4 Toledo run that gave
the Rockets a 16-point lead, 22-6, and essentially
by Crystal Young as the shot clock expired
and also included a three by Aaron Richmond. The
Rockets were 7-for-10 from three-point range in the
first half and 8-for-14 for the game while Buffalo
and 7-for-18 in the game. In addition to Pyykkonen,
senior Allison Bennett and sophomore Belinda
Gibb also reached double figures in scoring with 12
