Inaddition, it will be new BG coach UrbanMeyer’s first home game and the Falconswill be looking to avenge a 20-17 loss toBuffalo at UB Stadium last season.Buffalo will look to rebound from a 31-15 loss to BIG EAST Rutgers last Thursdaynight in front of a record crowd at UBStadium. The Bulls are looking to snap a17-game road losing streak as new headcoach Jim Hofher participates in his firstMAC contest. The Bulls have not won on the roadsince a 16-14 win at Lafayette on Sept. 19,1998 and have not defeated a Division I-Aopponent on the road since a 35-21 winover Boston College in November of 1969.Buffalo dropped Division I football in 1970and did not return to the highest level ofcollegiate football until the 1999 season.Last season the Bulls average marginof defeat on the road was 44.7 points.BULLSDROPOPENERPENER: Dennis Thomasrushed for 177 yards on 30 carries andRutgers used a momentum-changingfirst-half turnover to score a 31-15 victoryover the University at Buffalo before a UBStadium record crowd of 22,658.The loss spoiled the debut of new headcoach Jim Hofher but didn't dampen thecoach’s spirits. The Bulls battled theScarlet Knights of the BIG EAST on eventerms throughout most of the game andthe game was a far cry from the Bulls’ 59-0 loss to Rutgers last year.“We’re very proud of their effort – theyplayed very hard. They will have a chanceto improve if they continue to do that.None of us like the result, we hate theresult,” said Hofher. “We’ve asked them tobe extremely hard on themselves. Usuallyteams that want to get good will improvesignificantly from their first game to theirsecond game.”The Bulls opened the game strongly, forcing Rutgers, who rolled up 453 yardsin last year’s meeting, to punt on their firsttwo possessions and caused turnoverson its next two. However, the difference inthe game came when the Bulls could nottake advantage of those opportunities. The first chance came when juniorMike Lambert intercepted a pass byRyan Cubit and returned it to the Rutgers41 with 7:52 left in the first quarter.2001 Mid-American Conference StandingsEast DivisionMAC Div. Freedyalso needs just 21 passing attempts tomove past Reilly into third place all-time inthat category.OFFENSIVELINETURNSTO YOUTHOUTH: The Bulls’biggest question mark coming into theseason might be their offensive line aftertwo key losses during camp.First, returning starter Matt Baniewiczwas not able to participate this seasonbecause of medical reasons. A week intocamp, fifth-year senior Josh Stello wasunable to overcome a complete reconstructionof his right knee and was forcedto end his career. That means that of the six UB startersupfront last season (including the tightend), the Bulls have lost four of them(Baniewicz and seniors Gabe Kogler,David Pruce and Brandon Shaughnessy)before the season opener in 2001. Thatunit last season averaged 196 yardsrushing per game in the final six weeks ofthe season.Instead, the Bulls will go with a youthfulgroup that hopes to show the same kindof improvement as last year’s unit. TheBuffalo two-deep for the opener showsfour players who have never started agame in their Buffalo careers, with seniorTim Hedges the only exception, havingstarted all 11 games last year.DEFENSIVELINEINE IMPRESSIVEIN CAMPAMP: Headcoach Jim Hofher was extremely pleasedwith the play of his defensive line, UB’smost experienced position, duringpreseason drills.Hofher lauded the play of seniors ChrisShelly, Bob Dzvonick and Omari Jordanas well as that of junior Jamie Guerraand true freshman Anthony Andriano. The Bulls were impressive enough onthe line that senior Duane Williamsmoved back to his outside linebackerposition after originally being slated toplay defensive end this fall.TIGHTENDMERRYGO ROUNDOUND: The injurybug hit the tight end spot more than anyother during preseason drills for the Bullsand it continued in the openerAt one point, Buffalo was down to justone healthy tight end – walk-on KyleScott – out of the six slated to play theposition in pre-season.In the opener against Rutgers, Buffalolost senior Marvin Brereton for theseason with a torn patella tendon in hisleft knee. The Bulls could apply to theNCAA for a hardship waiver for a sixthyearof eligibility for Brereton. Buffalo alsolost backup Jason Smalarz to a concussionduring the game.
