FOOTBALLSPRING PREVIEWBULLS LOOKING TO BUILD ON POSITIVE 2006 CAMPAIGN17 starters return for 2007 seasonHead Coach Turner Gill’s sophomorecampaign is set to begin and UB fans arehoping that the Bulls can build on a numberof positives that occurred last season.Buffalo returns 23 players, includingeight starters to an offense that scored 220points in 2006. It was the most points scoredin a season since moving to Division I-A. Inaddition, the 201 points scored in conferenceplay were the most of any team in theMid-American Conference’s East Division.Buffalo returns even more experienceon the defensive side of the ball as 31 players, including nine starters return on defense. Here’s a look by position at what Gilland his staff will be evaluating this spring:OffenseQuarterbackJunior Drew Willy (Randolph, NJ/Randolph)returns for his third season as theBulls’ starting quarterback. Willy started thefirst eight games of the season before missingthe final four games with a thumb injury. He has fully recovered from the injury andwill look to improve on his already impressivenumbers since taking the quarterbackingjob as a true freshman in 2005.Willy finished 138-for-231 for 1,391yards and six touchdowns last fall. He onlythrew six interceptions in 231 attempts. Hedidn’t throw an interception in his first 131attempts and was the last remaining startingquarterback in the nation to throw aninterception.Willy had his best game of the seasonagainst Ball State when he went 27-of-40for 321 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The321 yards were a career high and thetwo touchdowns tied his career best. Hisperformance versus Ball State markedthe first time in four years that a UB quarterbackeclipsed the 300-yard plateau inpassing. With the departure of seniors, TonyPaoli and Stewart Sampsel, Willy is theBulls’ lone returning quarterback forspring drills. With that in mind, Gill hasdecided to move sophomore NaamanRoosevelt (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate)from wide receiver to quarterback, where the former Western NewYork Player of the Year starred in highschool.Roosevelt was the New York Statelarge school and Buffalo News co-Playerof the Year after amassing a staggering3,452 all-purpose yards as a senior andset a Western New York record by throwing35 touchdown passes in just 10games.“There is competition at this position,”Gill said. “Drew is the starter goingin and Naaman will have his chance tobattle it out.”Running BackEven with a plethora of experiencedrunning backs on the roster in 2006,James Starks (Niagara Falls, NY/NiagaraFalls) was the back that made thebiggest impact last season. With the departureof three seniors, he will be reliedon to carry much of the load in the Bulls’backfield in 2007. Last year, he led Buffalowith 704 yards on 175 carries andscored six touchdowns and was namedsecond-team All-Mid-American Conference.Starks became the first UB freshmanto earn All-League honors and justthe sixth Buffalo player to earn secondteamhonors in the school’s eight-yearassociation with the MAC. He was alsonamed to The Sporting News FreshmanAll-America Honorable Mention Team.Da’Von McCune (Buffalo, NY/CityHonors) is the only other returning tailbackthat saw action last season. He hadthree carries, including one for 10 yardsat Auburn.Redshirt freshman Brandon Thermilus(Flower Mound, TX/Marcus) whoreturns from an injury and sophomoreMario Henry (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent)will add depth to the backfield.Chris Scharon (Salem, NH/Salem)and Ike Nduka (White Plains, NY/WhiteDREW WILLYNAAMAN ROOSEVELT2007 SPRING PROSPECTUSJAMES STARKS

FOOTBALLPlains) will battle for time at fullback aftersplitting time at the position last season.“We need to find depth at the runningback position,” Gill said. “At fullbackwe need someone to step into the startingrole.”Wide ReceiverThe wide receiver position is one ofthe areas in which the Bulls return themost experience. Buffalo returns five receiversthat caught at least seven passeslast season.Leading the way is Terrance Breaux(Randallstown, MD/Randallstown) whois the Bulls’ top returning receiver. Thesenior wideout led all UB wide receiverslast year with 32 catches and 444 yardsreceiving. His best game of the seasoncame at Northern Illinois where he hadeight catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. It was his second 100-yard receivingperformance of his career makinghim only the fourth UB receiver tohave multiple 100-yard receiving gamessince the Bulls returned to Division I-A in1999.Although he will see time at quarterbackthis spring, coach Gill knowsthat he has a reliable option at receiverin Roosevelt. As a freshman, Roosevelthauled in 31 balls for 429 yards and twoscores. He ranked second on the team, averaging 35.8 yards per game receiving. He had seven catches for 72 yardsand a touchdown against Ball State andseven catches for 53 yards at Akron.Junior Ernest Jackson (Rochester,NY/Gates-Chili) played in all 12 gameslast season and had 11 receptions for162 yards. He had five catches for 74yards and a touchdown against BallState. His 14.7 yards-per-catch averagewas second best on the team.Junior Gary Rice (Hamilton, OH/Hamilton) made a seamless transitionfrom defensive back to wide receiverlast season. Although his season was cutshort with an injury, he did have ninecatches for 64 yards over five games.Brett Hamlin (Jupiter, FL/WilliamT. Dwyer) had seven catches over thefirst three games before missing the remainderof the season with a foot injury. He has recovered from the setback andlooks to return to form from his freshmancampaign. As a freshman, Hamlinled all UB receivers with 38 catches for371 yards.Sophomore Alex Pierre (Hackensack,NJ/Hackensack) and junior BradJAMEY RICHARDBeggs (Clarion, PA/Clarion-Limestone)each saw action last season and will adddepth and experience to the receivingcorps.“We need to find the two startersand at least two others who can makeplays,” Gill said.Tight EndsFinding a replacement for four-yearstarter Chad Upshaw will be a top priorityfor coach Gill.Junior Robert Yealu (CedarGrove, NJ/Cedar Grove) and sophomoreJesse Rack (Maspeth, NY/Christ the King) saw extensive timeon the field last season and shouldbe ready to move into a starting role.Yealu had six catches for 97 yardslast season. His 16.2 yards-per-catch averagewas tops on the team.Rack had a pair of catches for 15yards. He hauled in an eight-yard touchdownreception against Miami (OH).Kyle Brey (Granger, IN/Penn), whosat out last season as a redshirt, will adddepth at tight end. as will redshirt juniorBryan Kisabeth (Plymouth, MI/DivineChild), who returns from an injury sufferedat the end of spring ball last year.“Our goal is to find a starter to replaceChad Upshaw as we have qualitypeople returning,” Gill said.Offensive Line2007 SPRING PROSPECTUSSPRING PREVIEWThe Bulls return four of their startingfive offensive linemen from a seasonago. All told, the Bulls have five returningoffensive linemen that started atleast five games in 2006.Anchoring the line will be centerJamey Richard (Weston, CT/Weston).The senior center has started 23 straightgames over the last two seasons and isan All-MAC caliber player.Junior Jeff Niedermier (New Washington,OH/Buckeye Central) startedevery game at right guard a season agoand has started 18 straight games datingback to his freshman campaign.Junior Ray Norell (Monroe, CT/Masuk)showed his versatility last season bystarting the first five games at left tacklebefore starting the final seven games atleft guard.Midway through the 2006 season,Jordan Jerrold (Fairless Hills,PA/Pennsbury) was promoted to thestarting left tackle spot. Although onlyBrianWatsona freshman, he started the final sevengames of the season and helped reducethe Bulls’ sack total considerably. Prior toJerrold entering the starting lineup, Buffalowas allowing four sacks per game. However, once Jerrold became a starter, opponent’s sack total dropped to 2.7 pergame.Junior Jon Geddes (Colonie, NY/Colonie) started five games at left guardlast season and will likely battle for astarting role in 2007.Senior Jon Burgio (Clarence, NY/Clarence), junior Chris Lauzze (Pembroke,NY/Pembroke) and sophomoreMatt Bacoulis (Des Plaines, IL/MaineEast) all saw action as reserves last seasonand will have an opportunity forTREVOR SCOTT

FOOTBALLmost experienced unit. The Bulls returnall four starters as well as three reservesthat saw significant action last season.Leading the way is safety KareemByrom (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick).Last season, the senior captainranked third on the team in tackles with88 and his nine tackles for loss rankedsecond on the team. His four forcedfumbles tied him for second in the MAC.Byrom’s importance to this teamwas best exemplified when he was askedto move from the defensive backfield tolinebacker when the Bulls were hit withsome injuries. In Byrom’s first careergame at linebacker, he had seven tackles, including two for a loss, and a sackat nationally-ranked Boston College. Hefollowed that performance with a 10-tackle, 2.5 tackle for loss outing againstKent State.Senior Jesse Imes (Cincinnati, OH/Kings Mills) split time between safetyand cornerback last season. Although,he has more experience at the safetyspot with 14 career starts. Imes rankedseventh on the team in tackles with 48.He best asset was having a nose for theball as he tied a school record with fourfumble recoveries on the year.A pair of freshmen made some of themost significant impact on the defensiveside of the ball as Kendric Hawkins (UpperMarlboro, MD/DeMatha Catholic)and Mike Newton (Pasadena, MD/CalvertHall) played more like seasonedveterans.Hawkins started 11 games andranked fourth on the team in tackleswith 70. He added eight tackles for lossand a sack. He had a team-best five passbreakups and a pair of interceptions. Hesaved his interceptions for the nationalstage as he had pick against Auburn andBoston College - both nationally-rankedteams. Hawkins was named to TheSporting News Freshman All-AmericaHonorable Mention Team.Newton started nine games at safetyand led the Bulls and tied for first inthe MAC in interceptions with five. Thefive picks were the most by a UB playersince Mark Graham had six in 2002 andthe second-highest total since the Bullsreturned to Division I-A in 1999. He alsototaled 60 tackles, including four for aloss.Another young duo that contributedlast season was that of freshmanSherrod Lott (Plant City, FL/Plant City)and sophomore Keon Perry (Brunswick,GA/Brunswick). Lott started six gamesat corner. He had 33 tackles, including22 of the solo variety. Perry played in 10games and started one and finished theyear with eight tackles.Junior Andre Evans (Cleveland, OH/Glenville) started the final three gamesof the season at cornerback last season. He had nine tackles in the seven gamesin which he played.Senior Ronald Sears (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht) and junior Gerald Jackson(Alexandria, VA/DeMatha Catholic)add depth to the defensive backfield.“This is the most experienced partof our defense,” Gill said. “All starters areback and they will be working to improvetechnique and tackling,”Special TeamsSenior Ben Woods (Hermitage, PA/Hickory) returns for his fourth year asthe Bulls’ starting punter. He has been areliable weapon over his career and ashe enters his final season will likely finishhis career sitting atop the UB recordbook in every punting category. Lastseason, Woods averaged 37.9 yards perpunt. He had 13 punts downed insidethe 20-yard line and six fair catches.Woods also handled the majorityof the kick-off duties. He had five touchbackson the season. With the graduation of Adam Tanalskiand the departure of Taylor Packwood, who left the team for personalreasons, the kicking duties will lie on theshoulders of junior Gerry McGroarty(Wilkes-Barre, PA/Bishop Hoban) headinginto the spring. McGroarty didn’t seeany action last year, but did convert 2-of-5 field goal attempts, including a 46-yarder, in 2005.“Punter Ben Woods is solid,” Gill said.“Gerry McGroarty will have a chance tosee if he is the kicker.”The kick return game was an area inwhich Buffalo struggled in recent years. That was until Naaman Roosevelt arrivedon campus. As a freshman, Roosevelt setthe school record for single-season kickoffreturn (25.9 ypr). On the first kickoffreturn of his career, Roosevelt darted94 yards up the center of the field for atouchdown. It was the first kickoff returnfor a score by the Bulls since October 14,1989, a span of 178 games. However, if Roosevelt catches onas a quarterback, Gill may have to lookelsewhere for a return man.“Kick returners and punt returnerswill need to be found this spring ifNaaman becomes the QB,” Gill said. “Weneed to secure our punt protection.”2007 SPRING PROSPECTUSSPRING PREVIEWReturning LettermenThree Letters (7)LB Ollice Ervin ____________ Sr.LB LaRon Haymore ________ Sr.DB Jesse Imes _____________ Sr.OL Jamey Richard _________ Sr.LB Todd Robertson ________ Sr.DE Trevor Scott ____________ Sr.P/K Ben Woods ____________ Sr.Two Letters (20)WR Brad Beggs ____________ Jr.WR Terrance Breaux ________ Sr.DB Kareem Byrom _________ Sr.DB Jamal Chisam __________ Jr.OL Travis Coughlin _________ Jr.LB Chris Callahan __________ Jr.DB Andre Evans ___________ Jr.OL Jon Geddes ____________ Jr.WR Brett Hamlin ___________ Jr.DL Ronald Hilaire __________ Jr.WR Ernest Jackson _________ Jr.DE James Judges __________ Sr.OL Jeff Niedermier _________ Jr.OL Ray Norell _____________ Jr.WR Gary Rice ______________ Jr.FB Chris Scharon __________ Jr.DB Ronald Sears ___________ Sr.DE Andrae Smith __________ Sr.QB Drew Willy _____________ Jr.TE Robert Yealu ___________ Jr.One Letter (29)OL Matt Bacoulis __________So.OL Jon Burgio _____________ Sr.LB Tom Drewes ___________So.LB Josh Eagan ____________So.DL Labinot Hakanjin _______ Sr.RB Mario Henry ___________So.DB Kendric Hawkins ________So.LB David Hubbard _________ Jr.LB Larry Hutchinson _______ Sr.OL Chris Lauzze ___________ Jr.DB Sherrod Lott ___________So.DB Gerald Jackson _________ Jr.OL Jordan Jerrold __________So.TE Bryan Kisabeth _________ Jr.DL Bruno Lapointe _________So.RB Da’Von McCune ________So.P/K Gerry McGroarty ________ Jr.DL Anal Montanez _________So.FB Ike Nduka _____________So.DB Mike Newton __________So.WR Alex Pierre _____________So.DB Keon Perry ____________So.DL Frankie Pointer _________So.TE Jesse Rack _____________So.DL Dane Robinson _________So.DL Andrae Smith __________ Sr.RB James Starks ___________So.DB Chris Storr _____________So.DL Mike Thompson ________ Jr.
