2004-05 BUFFALO BASKETBALL Game Summaries GAME 1: #4/4 CONNECTICUT 107, BUFFALO 40 November 19, 2004 • Storrs, CT • Attendance: 10,167 The defending national champion Connecticut Huskies shot 64.2 percent from the floor in the game and scored 58 points in the paint to easily defeat the University at Buffalo women’s basketball team, 107- 40, in the season opener for both teams in a sold-out Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies had five players in double figures in scoring, led by preseason Naismith Trophy candidate Ann Strother with 20, including four three-pointers. The Huskies used first-half runs of 19-0 and 14-0 to take a 51-15 halftime lead, and they opened the second half with a 20-4 run en route to the 67-point victory. The Bulls got a spark off the bench from two freshmen in the first half when Stephanie Bennett dished the ball under the basket to Heather Turner for an easy layup for the Bulls’ first bucket of the game. Turner then grabbed a defensive rebound and Bennett knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 9-5 just over four minutes into the game. Bennett finished with team highs of 10 points and five assists while Turner grabbed a team-high five rebounds in her collegiate debut. Three Bulls scored in double figures in the game, led by junior Brooke Meunier with 14 points, and Buffalo outrebounded the Crusaders by a 38-36 margin, but it was not enough as the Bulls fell to 0-2 on the year. The Crusaders began the game on a 15-2 run and put it out of reach with a 13-0 run early in the second half. The Bulls found themselves in foul trouble early on in each half, and the Crusaders finished 20-for-29 from the free throw line while Buffalo was just 4-for-8. Meunier (14), senior Allison Bennett (12) and freshman Heather Turner (12) combined for 38 of the Bulls’ 42 points in the game. Turner led the Bulls on the glass for the second straight game with a team-high seven rebounds, along with junior Amy Kucheran. The Bulls used an 8-0 run midway through the first half, holding the Leopards scoreless for over six minutes, to take a 17-10 lead en route to a 22-17 halftime lead. That cushion would be enough as the Bulls didn’t relinquish their lead for the remainder of the game. The Bulls shot 40.9 percent from the floor in the game (18-for-44) with all nine players who saw action in the game scoring at least two points and grabbing at least one rebound. Freshman Stephanie Bennett added nine points, five rebounds and four steals, and freshman Diana Orozco Gollaz had six points and five rebounds. 2004-05 BUFFALO BASKETBALL GAME 4: NORTHEASTERN 71, BUFFALO 44 December 1, 2004 • Boston, MA • Attendance: 253 The Bulls got out to a strong start, shooting 55.0 percent from the floor in the first half, but struggled offensively in the second half, finally losing a 71-44 decision at Northeastern. T he Bulls led by five early on, 11-6, before two NU free throws at the 8:02 mark gave the Huskies a 20-18 lead. After Buffalo went up 21-20, the Huskies closed the half on a 14-6 run in the final six minutes to take a 34-27 lead at halftime. Buffalo turned the ball over on its first four possessions of the second half and Northeastern used an 18-4 run to take control of the game, leading by as many as 29 en route to the 27-point victory. The Bulls were led by senior Allison Bennett with 11 points, all in the second half. Freshman Heather Turner had eight points off the bench, and junior Amy Kucheran finished with a career-high seven points. The Bulls shot 40.9 percent from the floor in the game (18-for-44), but just 29.2 percent in the second half (7-for-24), and they were just 6-for-17 from the free throw line. Freshman Heather Turner recorded the first double-double of her career with a team-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and a game-high 11 rebounds. She scored six points during an 8-2 Buffalo run to start the second half that put the Bulls up by one, 35-34, with 17:20 to play. A three-pointer by junior Brooke Meunier at the 14:16 mark gave the Bulls a 43-40 lead, but the Black Bears then embarked on runs of 14-0 and 11- 0 to take control of the game. Sophomore Belinda Gibb finished with a career-high 13 points off the bench, and Meunier added eight points and seven rebounds for the Bulls. Buffalo held a 13-6 lead and a 17-10 lead in the first half before Bucknell put together a 12-2 run, taking the lead for good, 21-19, at the 4:52 mark on a steal and layup by Lindsey Hollobaugh. The Buffalo turnover on that play was the second of six that the Bulls committed in the final 5:11 of the first half, and Bucknell gradually built a double-digit lead, 32-22, before going into halftime up by eight, 32-24. A late three-pointer by senior Allison Bennett with 2:19 to play got Buffalo within six, 60-54, but the Bulls shot just 1-for-6 from the floor in the final two minutes of the game while Bucknell knocked down 6-of-9 free throws to secure the victory. Freshman Heather Turner finished with game highs of 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting and eight rebounds. Buffalo outrebouded Bucknell by a 39-31 margin, but the Bull committed 27 turnovers in the game while Bucknell had just 14.
