Ortega’s favorite target is seniorTiffany Bell (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) , who has been the recipientof 37 of her assists, while senior Mari McClure (Rochester Hills,MI/Rochester Adams) has converted 21 of Ortega’s passes forbuckets. Against St. Bonaventure on December 9, Ortega had aseason-high 10 assists, nine in the first half, with five going to Belland four going to McClure. Insubsequent weeks, <strong>Buffalo</strong> received seven, five, 10, 11, three, oneand two points in the AP poll. The Bulls earned a season-high 11points in the AP poll on December 18 when they held an 8-0record.Bulls Ink Three Early SigneesBulls’ head coach Cheryl Dozier has announced the earlysigning of three players to her 2001-2002 recruiting class. TheBulls’ early signees consist of freshmen Erin Lawrenson (Elkland,PA/Elkland Area High School) and Talia Merlino (Newtown, PA/Notre Dame (NJ) High School) and junior college transfer AngelaGranger (Belmont, NY/Jamestown-Olean Community College).Lawrenson averaged 20.5 points, 9.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists and3.9 steals last season <strong>at</strong> Elkland Area High School, helping her teamcapture its second straight league championship title. A 5-10guard, Lawrenson posted 13 double-doubles and one triple-double,leading her team to the Elite Eight in the st<strong>at</strong>e.Merlino is a 5-4 point guard <strong>at</strong> New Jersey St<strong>at</strong>eChampionship-contender Notre Dame High School. She led herteam to the second round of the st<strong>at</strong>e playoffs as a junior, averagingfour points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals whileshooting 43 percent from the floor and 33 percent from three-pointrange.Granger is in her second year <strong>at</strong> Jamestown-Olean CommunityCollege where she led the Jaguars to a 15-7 overall record and anupset win over n<strong>at</strong>ionally-ranked Genesee Community College inthe New York St<strong>at</strong>e semifinals last season. She averaged 18 points,nine rebounds and two assists in 24 games.“Both Talia and Erin come from phenomenal high schoolprograms," said Dozier.
