CHAIR AND CEO MESSAGE
Our 99th year of service to our
community was the best ever
for our YMCA.
We served 65,000 individuals,
towards our 2010 goal of 90,000.
We had our best summer day camp
program with over 6,000 camper
weeks. We had nearly 100%
occupancy in our 106 room housing
program. We maintained an
average of registered members
of over 20,000 and served another
average of 5,000 in general access
in our family centres. We had our
first full year of the service delivery
component of Families First
Edmonton research project.
We completed the Straight from
the Heart Capital Campaign, raising
$10.2 million, the most ever raised
by our YMCA in a community
campaign. The construction of
the Don Wheaton Family YMCA
continued as the underground
parkade was completed and the
above ground structure began to
be visible.
The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign
raised $454,000 the most ever
raised.
Our Centennial Celebration
Committee co-chaired by Ed Cook
and Bill Rees worked in earnest
as they finalized the plans for the
YMCA’s 2007 centenary. A whole
range of events and activities are
being implemented as this annual
report is prepared.
We honor the contributions of
the thousands of people who have
served as YMCA volunteers and staff
over the past 100 years. It was their
leadership and commitment that
ensured ongoing renewal and
relevance for the YMCA of
Edmonton. Their labours are
recorded in a book that will be
published and released in
April 2007.
It is our privilege to continue to
build on this dynamic legacy of
personal development in spirit,
mind and body for all in the
community regardless of
circumstance. Everyone is welcome
to the YMCA. As we reflect over the
past year, we are grateful for the
support of our board and staff
leadership team, the hundreds of
volunteers, numerous community
partners, donors and the tens of
thousands of men, women and
children who chose YMCA services.
We invite you to actively participate
in the centennial celebrations over
2007. May these celebrations
honoring the achievements of the
past century re-energize and
reaffirm our commitment for the
next 100 years.
