YMCA World Peace Week was held
November 18-25, 2006. The YMCA
of Edmonton, together with YMCA
Associations across Canada, urge
people to make peace their personal
cause and to tap into the collective
power of people who want to make
a positive impact in the world.
The YMCA incorporates peace
building activities into programs
year- round. During YMCA World
Peace Week special emphasis is
placed on teaching children and
youth about the dimensions of
peace and on recognizing the peace
efforts of local residents.
Through
games,
activities and
by using the
YMCA Peace
Building
Activity Guide,
children and
youth translate values into actions
by exploring topics such as
cooperation, empathy, respect,
positive communication, conflict
resolution and parallels between
community and global issues.
The 2006 YMCA Peace Medals
were awarded to Yvonne Chiu
(Multicultural Health Brokers) and
The Multicultural Youth Mentorship
and Leadership Initiative (MYML).
The YMCA Peace Medal is intended
to recognize the achievements of
individuals and groups in local
communities who - without any
special resources - demonstrate in
their lives and activities the values
expressed in the World Alliance of
YMCA's 1981 Statement of Peace.
