one partner at a time
In January 2006, the YMCA Housing
program established a partnership with
the George Spady Centre. The purpose
of this partnership was to provide
temporary shelter to clients who have
finished detox and waiting for
treatment. There are long waiting lists
for treatment and clients are sometimes
delayed a month after detox to be
admitted into treatment. Many of the
clients that George Spady serve are
homeless and have no shelter after they
leave detox. As a former employee of the
George Spady, I often witnessed clients
relapsing after detox because they had
no housing until their treatment date.
Clients often found themselves back on
the streets and drawn back into a
lifestyle of alcohol and drugs. Our
partnership with the George Spady
Centre provides the clients with a safe
place to stay until they leave for
treatment. During their stay at the
YMCA, they are given the opportunity
to participate in recovery programs such
as AADAC and 12 Step programs.
We have five rooms available for the
George Spady clients. Since January, we
have had eight clients participate in the
program. All of those clients successfully
made it to treatment, so far. One of the
two that did not make it to treatment
cancelled treatment due to medical
reasons. Presently we have three clients
occupying rooms from the program and
doing well with focusing on their
recovery.
