<strong>Town</strong> of Lee Annual <strong>Town</strong> <strong>Report</strong> - <strong>2012</strong>
Sewer Div<strong>is</strong>ion
The Sewer Departments primary responsibility <strong>is</strong> to collect, pump, <strong>and</strong>
tre<strong>at</strong> raw sewage. Th<strong>is</strong> f<strong>is</strong>cal year <strong>the</strong> Sewer Department tre<strong>at</strong>ed approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 240
million gallons of raw sewage. The <strong>Town</strong>’s Waste W<strong>at</strong>er Superv<strong>is</strong>or, Alan Zerb<strong>at</strong>o <strong>and</strong>
h<strong>is</strong> staff continue to maintain, oper<strong>at</strong>e, monitor, <strong>and</strong> initi<strong>at</strong>e improvements to <strong>the</strong> collection
system, <strong>and</strong> pump st<strong>at</strong>ions. The Waste W<strong>at</strong>er Tre<strong>at</strong>ment Plant <strong>is</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ional <strong>and</strong>
<strong>is</strong> producing a “quality” effluent without permit viol<strong>at</strong>ions.
Collection System:
Th<strong>is</strong> year <strong>the</strong>re were 8 new sewer connections, adding additional revenue
to <strong>the</strong> department. <strong>Town</strong> staff responded to 27 after hour alarms, 7 sewer line blockages,
replaced 4 troubled loc<strong>at</strong>ions with new sewer pipe, <strong>and</strong> performed prevent<strong>at</strong>ive
maintenance for 5 pump st<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> 26 miles of collection lines throughout <strong>the</strong> town.
Waste W<strong>at</strong>er Tre<strong>at</strong>ment Plant:
The town continues to conduct its rigorous phosphorous removal program.
Th<strong>is</strong> was m<strong>and</strong><strong>at</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> EPA. The in-house program continues with excellent results,
thanks to Al Zerb<strong>at</strong>o <strong>and</strong> h<strong>is</strong> staff's efforts. The plant <strong>is</strong> still on a dem<strong>and</strong> response program
with WMECO. Th<strong>is</strong> program pays <strong>the</strong> town money to be on-call. To offset incurred
costs of <strong>the</strong> plant, <strong>the</strong> Sewer Department accepted <strong>and</strong> tre<strong>at</strong>ed 1,500,000 gallons of septage.
The revenue gener<strong>at</strong>ed by th<strong>is</strong> undertaking was $150,000.00.
The town once again received <strong>the</strong> very prestigious Aqua-Aerobics Plant
Performance Award for Oper<strong>at</strong>ional Excellence. Nice job Al, Craig, Todd <strong>and</strong> Myron.
In addition, Al co-authored a technical paper with Aqua-Aerobics titled Field
Valid<strong>at</strong>ion of Sequencing B<strong>at</strong>ch Reactor <strong>and</strong> Cloth Media Filtr<strong>at</strong>ion Technologies to
Attain Ultra-low Nutrient Levels. Th<strong>is</strong> paper was based on d<strong>at</strong>a obtained <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> plant.
It <strong>is</strong> <strong>available</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> DPW office should you w<strong>is</strong>h to peruse it. Not only did Al coauthor
<strong>the</strong> paper, it was chosen by WEFTEC (W<strong>at</strong>er Environment Feder<strong>at</strong>ion) as a lead
present<strong>at</strong>ion paper th<strong>at</strong> was presented to an intern<strong>at</strong>ional audience. Al should be commended
on th<strong>is</strong> achievement.
