CULTURAL COUNCIL<br />

Lee Cultural Council The Lee Cultural Council <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 329 councils<br />

establ<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>hed st<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ewide as part of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Local Cultural Council (LCC) Program admin<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>tered<br />

by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Massachusetts Cultural Council, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> largest grassroots cultural funding network<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> which supports thous<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s of community-based projects in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> arts,<br />

humanities, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> interpretive sciences for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> benefit of every Massachusetts citizen.<br />

Each year, local councils award more than $2 milli<strong>on</strong> in grants to more than 5,000 cultural<br />

programs st<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ewide including school field trips/afterschool programs, c<strong>on</strong>certs,<br />

festivals, lectures, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>er, dance, music, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> film. LCC projects take place in schools,<br />

community centers, libraries, elder care facilities, town halls, parks, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> wherever communities<br />

come toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r.<br />

In f<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>cal <str<strong>on</strong>g>2012</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lee Cultural Council received over 40 grant applic<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>s<br />

of which 18 were approved for funds totaling $4,627.00 (including <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> st<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e alloc<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong><br />

of $3,870). Approved applicants/programs included <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Becket Arts Center (Marty<br />

Lasker Lecture Series), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Eagles B<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> (<str<strong>on</strong>g>Town</str<strong>on</strong>g> C<strong>on</strong>cert), John Root (Edible Wild Plant<br />

Walk, Flying Cloud Institute (Smart Workshop <str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lee Elementary), Vikki True (I Get<br />

A Kick Out Of You c<strong>on</strong>cert <strong>on</strong> Founder’s Weekend), St. Mary’s School (Stained Glass<br />

workshop) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Terrence <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hall</str<strong>on</strong>g> (Terry A La Berry & Friends).<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, local cultural councils may produce council-origin<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed<br />

events. In F<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>cal <str<strong>on</strong>g>2012</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> council's Program Director, Chr<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> Collins of Lee, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>/or<br />

produced <strong>on</strong> behalf of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> council several successful events including Lee Idol 2011<br />

(co-produced with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Student Educ<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>al Development Fund’s), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Alice’s<br />

Restaurant Movie & Memorabilia Event, a Holiday Caroling Event (co-produced with<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lee Chamber of Commerce <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> C<strong>on</strong>greg<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>al Church of Lee) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Jazz<br />

event (as part of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Student Educ<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong>al Development Fund’s Cabin Fever Festival).<br />

These programs were well-<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>tended <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> enjoyed not <strong>on</strong>ly by residents of Lee but v<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>itors<br />

as well. The council looks forward to c<strong>on</strong>tinuing to promote <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> arts, humanities<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> interpretive sciences by carrying out its st<str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>e m<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>at</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed duties as well by producing<br />

its own events <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> programs for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> benefit of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> community.<br />
