<strong>Town</strong> of Lee Annual <strong>Town</strong> <strong>Report</strong> - <strong>2012</strong>
CULTURAL COUNCIL
Lee Cultural Council The Lee Cultural Council <strong>is</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> 329 councils
establ<strong>is</strong>hed st<strong>at</strong>ewide as part of <strong>the</strong> Local Cultural Council (LCC) Program admin<strong>is</strong>tered
by <strong>the</strong> Massachusetts Cultural Council, <strong>the</strong> largest grassroots cultural funding network
in <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ion which supports thous<strong>and</strong>s of community-based projects in <strong>the</strong> arts,
humanities, <strong>and</strong> interpretive sciences for <strong>the</strong> benefit of every Massachusetts citizen.
Each year, local councils award more than $2 million in grants to more than 5,000 cultural
programs st<strong>at</strong>ewide including school field trips/afterschool programs, concerts,
festivals, lectures, <strong>the</strong><strong>at</strong>er, dance, music, <strong>and</strong> film. LCC projects take place in schools,
community centers, libraries, elder care facilities, town halls, parks, <strong>and</strong> wherever communities
come toge<strong>the</strong>r.
In f<strong>is</strong>cal <strong>2012</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Lee Cultural Council received over 40 grant applic<strong>at</strong>ions
of which 18 were approved for funds totaling $4,627.00 (including <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e alloc<strong>at</strong>ion
of $3,870). Approved applicants/programs included <strong>the</strong> Becket Arts Center (Marty
Lasker Lecture Series), <strong>the</strong> Eagles B<strong>and</strong> (<strong>Town</strong> Concert), John Root (Edible Wild Plant
Walk, Flying Cloud Institute (Smart Workshop <strong>at</strong> Lee Elementary), Vikki True (I Get
A Kick Out Of You concert on Founder’s Weekend), St. Mary’s School (Stained Glass
workshop) <strong>and</strong> Terrence <strong>Hall</strong> (Terry A La Berry & Friends).
Additionally, local cultural councils may produce council-origin<strong>at</strong>ed
events. In F<strong>is</strong>cal <strong>2012</strong>, <strong>the</strong> council's Program Director, Chr<strong>is</strong> Collins of Lee, <strong>and</strong>/or
produced on behalf of <strong>the</strong> council several successful events including Lee Idol 2011
(co-produced with <strong>the</strong> Student Educ<strong>at</strong>ional Development Fund’s), <strong>the</strong> Alice’s
Restaurant Movie & Memorabilia Event, a Holiday Caroling Event (co-produced with
<strong>the</strong> Lee Chamber of Commerce <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Congreg<strong>at</strong>ional Church of Lee) <strong>and</strong> a Jazz
event (as part of <strong>the</strong> Student Educ<strong>at</strong>ional Development Fund’s Cabin Fever Festival).
These programs were well-<strong>at</strong>tended <strong>and</strong> enjoyed not only by residents of Lee but v<strong>is</strong>itors
as well. The council looks forward to continuing to promote <strong>the</strong> arts, humanities
<strong>and</strong> interpretive sciences by carrying out its st<strong>at</strong>e m<strong>and</strong><strong>at</strong>ed duties as well by producing
its own events <strong>and</strong> programs for <strong>the</strong> benefit of <strong>the</strong> community.
