<strong>Town</strong> of Lee Annual <strong>Town</strong> <strong>Report</strong> - <strong>2012</strong>
POLICE DEPARTMENT
To The Honorable Board of Selectmen:
I hereby submit <strong>the</strong> annual report of <strong>the</strong> Police Department,
Communic<strong>at</strong>ions Center, <strong>and</strong> Emergency Management.
Th<strong>is</strong> year has been one of change <strong>and</strong> growth. The department responded
to a wide variety of calls in <strong>the</strong> service of our citizens.
The Community Enhancement Committee ass<strong>is</strong>ted me gre<strong>at</strong>ly in designing
a forward looking plan for <strong>the</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> department <strong>and</strong> I thank <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong>ir
continued ass<strong>is</strong>tance.
With cooper<strong>at</strong>ion of Superintendant Jake McC<strong>and</strong>less, we were able to
begin <strong>the</strong> DARE Program <strong>at</strong> both <strong>the</strong> Elementary School <strong>and</strong> <strong>at</strong> St. Mary’s School. Our
first gradu<strong>at</strong>ion in 10 years was supported by over 100 parents, teachers, police officers
<strong>and</strong> friends. Officer Kohlenberger <strong>and</strong> I <strong>at</strong>tended DARE training classes to learn
<strong>the</strong> newest DARE curriculum.
With my promotion to Chief, <strong>the</strong> Board of Selectmen authorized an
Assessment Center to ass<strong>is</strong>t in <strong>the</strong> selection of a new Sergeant. The Assessment Center
staff, cons<strong>is</strong>ted of 3 sitting police chiefs, a school superintendent <strong>and</strong> a human
resources professional. At <strong>the</strong> conclusion of <strong>the</strong> assessment center Jeffery Roosa was
selected from 5 c<strong>and</strong>id<strong>at</strong>es <strong>and</strong> promoted to Sergeant in February. An interesting side
note was th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> members of <strong>the</strong> assessment center were very impressed <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> high
levels of expert<strong>is</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> each c<strong>and</strong>id<strong>at</strong>e d<strong>is</strong>played. A tribute to <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard of excellence
set by all previous police chiefs for your officers. Sergeant Roosa has <strong>at</strong>tended
several management classes <strong>and</strong> continues in h<strong>is</strong> role as training officer.
We continued to train officers in <strong>the</strong> various d<strong>is</strong>ciplines required for a professional
police force. Officers DeSant<strong>is</strong> <strong>and</strong> Burdick <strong>at</strong>tended a Police Bike P<strong>at</strong>rol
school, Officer Ben <strong>Town</strong>e <strong>at</strong>tended a Sexual Assault Investig<strong>at</strong>ors School, Officer
DeSant<strong>is</strong> <strong>at</strong>tended several classes with regard to Sex Offender reg<strong>is</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong>
firearms licensing.
Officer Ryan Lucy continued working with <strong>the</strong> Berkshire County Drug
Task Force in stemming <strong>the</strong> omnipresent drug problem in Lee <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> surrounding
towns. Officer Todd Briggs, who <strong>is</strong> assigned to <strong>the</strong> FBI Gang Task Force, was instrumental
in <strong>the</strong> investig<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> arrest of <strong>the</strong> three Hell’s Angels for <strong>the</strong> murders of
three local men. Sergeant Roosa <strong>and</strong> Officer DeSant<strong>is</strong> also continue to train <strong>and</strong>
respond with <strong>the</strong> Berkshire County Special Response Team.
