The DOS Enhancer (TD E)by Art SchumerS & H Software58 Van Orden RoadHarrington Park, NJ 07640201-768-3144$69.9548K, ROM/RAM card, optionalclockDOS 3.3Locked (Support Disk Unlocked)Rating: AAReviewed by Michael L. WeasnerTOE is an outgrowth of S & H Software's UBI 3.0 and 4.0packages (see Peelings II Feb 82 and Jul-Aug 82). It incorporatessome extra functions while deleting others. The UBI programs willcontinue to be supported by S & H but TOE is the program for today. The power of TOE is extensive and the manual is excellent. In fact, the only thing I can say bad about TOE is the difficulty in using theediting function of the Disk Access Utility (a disk Zap-type programfor editing data on a disk). The manual mentions that this program isa freebie and not supported at this time so I guess I really can't complaintoo much. The manual is 80 Apple-sized pages in a three-ring binder. It containsjust about everything you need to know in order to make safemodifications to DOS. There is a short history of Apple DOS andthen some background about TOE. Combined with the training programthere is very little left unsaid. Very well done, S & H.There is a training program on side 2 of the program disk thatshows you what to expect when actually using the TOE Utility Disk(side 1). This is an excellent idea since it reduces the chance of makingfatal mistakes when messing around with DOS. Using the TOEUtility Disk you can either create a disk having the quickloading DOSor update an existing disk with this DOS. Besides gaining fasterLOAD/BLOADs and SA VE/BSAVEs, you also get correct sectorcounts for file lengths greater than 255. File lengths greater than32767 ($7FFF) can now be saved, and a CATALOG break is providedto break out of long CATALOG listings. Other features availableare a free space command, a text file dump command, and abinary address/length command, each of which is available from immediateor deferred mode (only one feature is available in a DOS versionsince the VERIFY command is overlayed with the change). Themissing BASIC or DOS can be loaded into a RAM card on boot up.Many other extras are available on the support disk (side 2).There are routines for loading assemblers into the RAM card, the previouslymentioned Disk Access Utility, a multidrive copy program (foruse with two or more drives), a nice menu and CATALOG programfor two keystroke file selection (reads clock), and many patches forother miscellaneous functions. You will definitely get your money's worth from TOE. Again, considerwhat your needs are and how you plan on using the modifiedDOS. If you need both fast loading and saving then TOE will definitelyfill your requirements. It should be noted that a RAM or ROM cardwith alternate BASIC is required to use the TOE Utility Disk program, but the RAM/ROM card is not required to use disks with theenhanced DOS.DTurbochargerby Roland GustafssonSilicon Valley Systems1625 El Camino Real #4Belmont, CA 94002415-593-4344$29.95Applesoft BASIC and Mach. Lang.48K, Applesoft in RAM or ROM,option clockDOS 3.3UnlockedRating: B+Reviewed by Michael L. WeasnerThis package includes a fast LOAD/BLOAD enhancement, a freespace routine, date stamping of files either with a clock (MountainHardware format) or manually, a supposedly quick copy program, and a DOS command changer. The manual is even less adequatethan Ultra Fast Loader's (only two pages). However, the programsare very simple to use. The TURBO program is a four sector binaryprogram, that when BRUN, patches DOS to allow fastLOAD/BLOADing. Other programs on the disk can be used to makeVolume 4, Number 1, 1983the date functions work, or lines from these programs can be addedto a HELLO program so that all the necessary steps (BRUN TURBO, get new date) can be accomplished on boot up. The free spaceroutine is accurate and displays the disk free space remaining on theCATALOG display. The date stamping is useful and unique in its implementation. The TURBO program on the disk is used to maintainthe current date. When files are written to disk the current date is appendedbut is not part of the file name. The date will only be visible ifa MONitor Output command is in effect. Very nice. The quick copyroutine copied the text disk in 90 seconds by copying only thosetracks in use. However the destination disk must have been previouslyIN!Tialized (a 48 second process) so the usefulness of this programis debatable, since COPYA took 125 seconds to make the samecopy (including the IN!Tialization). The fast loading routine used in Turbocharger does not have theoverwriting of memory problem that Ultra Fast Loader has. The !NITfunction, however, has been disabled. It may not work with a usermodified DOS depending on the degree of modifications .The DOS command changer is similar to that in DOS Boss fromBeagle Brothers (see Peelings II Sep-Oct 81). The changes are writtento disk and not memory. With this utility you can change any ofthe DOS commands, (LOAD, SAVE, BRUN, etc.) to just about anythingyou wish.Overall, if you are looking to increase the speed ofLOAD/BLOADs only, then Turbocharger may be just what youneed. The programs are easy to use and work without problems ordifficulties. Don't expect much help from the manual though.D21
