STOPS ON A DIME: Fully loaded, the 797 achievesspeeds of 68 km/h. Oil-cooled hydraulic 42-inchdisc brakes bring it to a haltI’ve been a passenger in a full load at 64 kilometresper hour. You imagine putting yourhouse in the back of a pickup truck and drivingalong; it’s quite a feeling.”To put it another way: imagine carting 1.4million pounds zooming with you on yourdrive to work. The good news is the brakes work just fine.At Caterpillar’s vehicle testing site in Arizona,Davis watched a fully loaded truck travellingat that speed “stop on a dime.” It’s no surprise:each wheel is backed by 10 to 15, 42-inchbrake discs. They’re cooled by a computersystem that pumps more than 1,000 gallonsof oil per minute through the coolers and thebrake discs. In fact, driving the 797 isn’t that differentfrom operating a much smaller vehicle, andis a favourite with operators, says Davis. Afterall, at its heart, it’s just a big old two-passenger,two-door dump truck with rear-wheel-drive.“It’s like driving your car,” he says again.Yeah, right, and your car usually has 70 elephantsin the back.OLDER BROTHER: Today’s 797grew from the 793C, pictured heretop photograph courtesy of suncor70 tracks & treads • Spring 2008 www.finning.ca
