Ebonie Sherrelle Pierce is a 3 rd year flute player at the Hazelwood Elementary Middle School inBaltimore Maryland. She has performed during many Hazelwood school programs as part of theInstrumental Music Band under the direction of Ms. Rochelle Montagne. In fall of 2007 Ebonie was therecipient of the Tuned-In scholarship Program at Peabody Preparatory and started lessons at PeabodyPreparatory under the instruction of Ms. Rachel Choe. Ebonie performed during the Peabody Woodwind<strong>Recital</strong> in the summer of <strong>2008</strong> and also gained a wealth of knowledge during that summer in ‘TheComplete Musician’ class also at Peabody Preparatory. She performed in the spring <strong>2008</strong> All CityHonors Band Concert @ Morgan State <strong>University</strong> and successfully auditioned to compete in theMaryland Music Educators Association All-State Solo Competition at Towson State <strong>University</strong>. Shewas featured in the fall <strong>2008</strong> issue of the Peabody Magazine where the Tuned-In program washighlighted in the article headed “Now Run With It” by Mat Edelson. Ebonie, a second year recipient ofthe Tuned-In scholarship, is a vibrant 12 years old 7 th grader and a consistent honor roll student withinterests that include math, reading, and ice-skating.Katie Byrne has been studying as a preparatory student at Peabody for the last 2 years. She has alsobeen actively involved in her high school symphonic band for the last 5 years. Currently, she is thesecond chair in the FRYO Philharmonic Orchestra for flute. This upcoming spring, Kaitlin will also beplaying in the pit for her high school play Les Miserables.Yoonju Cho (MSE '07, BS '05) is a 2nd year PhD student in Biomedical Engineering at <strong>Johns</strong> <strong>Hopkins</strong><strong>University</strong>. She initially learned flute in middle school for 3 years but had to quit in high school due toschool work. This September, after 11 years of break, she finally re-started her flute lessons. Yoonjuadmits that it was not easy to start it all over from the scratch after such a long time-off but flute hasbecome a nice break from all the science and engineering of her life.Ara Ko started flute when she was in the 4 th grade. She has been studying at Peabody Preparatory forlast 3 years. She has been selected to perform at the Peabody Preparatory brass and winds departmentalrecitals. Currently, she is the second chair flutist in her middle school’s concert band.Catherine Klein has been playing the flute for 25 years, and studying flute with Rachel Choe in January2007. She often plays at her church, St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Churh in Maryland. She lives inHampstead MD with her husband, Scott. Her other hobbies include gardening and cake decorating. Shehas worked for the <strong>Johns</strong> <strong>Hopkins</strong> Bloomberg School of Public Health since 1992 and is currently theDirector of Graduate Education.Gene Yang is a sophomore at Perry Hall High School and started playing flute with Lando Baik whenhe was in the 4 th grade in 2004. He is presently studying with JeeYoung Rachel Choe, whom he beganwith in 2005. In 2007-<strong>2008</strong> at his high school, he was the first chair flutist in Symphonic Winds andmade the All County Band. Currently this year, he is the fourth chair in Wind Ensemble and the secondchair in Chamber Orchestra. He also performed in the County and State Solo and Ensemble and AllCounty Band in his middle school years.Zhen Zhang started his first flute lesson in 2003 through Peabody's ACE program using a student flutebought for his kids. He has since replaced it with a better one and is still having fun along with endlessfrustrations. Since 2006, he has been studying flute with Rachel Choe. He is a faculty member ofDepartment of Pathology at <strong>Johns</strong> <strong>Hopkins</strong> School of Medicine and feels pity that there's no "sabbatical"for flute study.


Grace Min, a native of Seoul, Korea, started playing the flute at the age of 14. She was a member ofGlobal Mission Church Youth Orchestra for 2 years and has performed music in Mexico and Thailandwith the orchestra. She was a co-principal flutist of American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra andprincipal flutist of Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra. She was the winner of American Fine Arts Festivaland has performed twice as a soloist and duet at Carnegie Hall as a winner of AFAF. She was also awinner as a duet at New Praise competition and performed at German Culture Centre. Now she iscurrently a member of Peabody Youth Orchestra.Jin-ah (Gina) Kim is a senior at Thomas Jefferson HS for Science and Tech in Alexandria, VA. Shehas been studying at Peabody preparatory with Rachel Choe since December 2006. Gina hasparticipated in many honor bands including All-district XI band, Senior Regional Orchestra, and All-Virginia Band throughout her high school years. She is also currently a member of the flute section inAmerican Youth Philharmonic under the direction of Luis Haza.Ellen (Bo-Kyung) Kim, born in Seoul, South Korea, began to play the piano at the age of four. Ms.Kim immigrated to the United States in 2005, and started to study the piano in earnest with Eun-JungShon when she was seventeen years old. She has received several awards, including the Frederic ChopinAward from Mount Hebron High School in Maryland, a commendation for Distinguished Achievementfrom Maryland State Music Teachers Association, and Honorable Mention in the Friday Morning MusicClub High School Piano Competition in Washington D.C. Ms. Kim also performed at Zankel Hall inCarnegie Hall in June 2007 for the Winners' <strong>Recital</strong> of International Young Artist Hymn Competition,collaborating with violinist Lee Jeon, and at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore for the Mid-Semester Chamber Music Concert in <strong>2008</strong> and Elderhostel <strong>Recital</strong> in July and August 2006. In thesummer of <strong>2008</strong>, she attended the Aspen Music Festival and School to study with Gabriel Chodos. Sheis currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Music degree program at Peabody Conservatory, studying withEllen Mack.Hyun-ji Park graduated the Peabody Conservatory of the <strong>Johns</strong> <strong>Hopkins</strong> <strong>University</strong> with GraduatePerformance Diploma. Ms Park began her piano studies at the age of four in her native Seoul, Korea,and holds a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master degree from Sook Myoung Women's <strong>University</strong>.She performed at the 1st International Music Festival in Caprarola, Italy and at Queensland conservatoryand the Opera House during a concert tour in Australia. Ms Park has appeared as a soloist with Sophia,Youth Orchestra of Sook Myoung <strong>University</strong> where she worked as a music director. She also worked asan instructor and a teaching assistant at the piano department of Suwon <strong>University</strong>. She has givennumerous recitals and ensemble concerts in Seoul and Baltimore-Washington area including Peabody.Ms Park is currently a piano faculty and accompanist for school choirs of Bryn Mawr School inBaltimore.
