The piece laysout five ideas in the opening section. These ideas are developed as a set of variations, onefor each of the four instruments, and the last for an ending.Kevin Clark (b. 1984) is a double-degree student at the Peabody Institute and the JohnsHopkins University, majoring in composition in the studio of Dr. Robert Sirota, andphilosophy at the Homewood campus. He is from New Jersey, where he won the HarmoniumChoral CompositionContest for his setting of a passage from Hamlet, entitled This Bird of Dawning Singeth.for was composed for the 2005 24hc (http://24hc.org). In this work, several sound massesare presented in various manners: sparse, quiet, rhythmic, etc. The sounds derive theiroriginal source from general surroundings in the city: trains, cement mixers, water fixtures...Cory (C. R. Kasprzyk) is very tired. For more information on other things, seewww.crkasprzyk.comThree Moods are three extremely short pieces that are a set of impressions I received from apassage by Leo Tolstoy:“I wanted movement and not a calm course of existence. I wanted excitement anddanger and the chance to sacrifice myself for my love. I felt in myself a superabundance ofenergy which found no outlet in our quiet life.”This quote constitutes the text for the end of the piece. I think there is a similarity betweenthe feelings expressed by the author and the overwhelming hubris it took to volunteer forsomething like 24hc.

Chris Gainey (b. 1981) received a bachelor’s degree in both guitar performance andcomposition from The Peabody Conservatory. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree inboth areas, in the studios of Ray Chester and Dr. Bruno Amato.2 from YeatsText by William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)From Responsibilities, and Other Poems (1916)39. PeaceAH, that Time could touch a formThat could show what Homer’s ageBred to be a hero’s wage.‘Were not all her life but storm,Would not painters paint a formOf such noble lines’ I said,‘Such a delicate high head,All that sternness amid charm,All that sweetness amid strength?’Ah, but peace that comes at length,Came when Time had touched her form.31. It is scored for tenor/alto sax, violin, andsoprano. Mr. Cole chose these texts because they were the first two public domain texts thathe found on the Internet that were under a page long. Because of the time frame, he tried toconstrict the formal elements of the piece into very recognizable sections.Andrew Cole is an active composer and performer from the Baltimore area. Better

luck, therefore, to us all; and health, happiness, & friendly salutations to yourself.”Notes for Better Luck (… with Government): I got done early. I got a little sleep. Enjoy themusic. It’s simple. Composers are assigned a small ensemble for which they must compose a piece ofmusic within twelve hours, where each ensemble’s size and instrumentation were decided bydrawing first a number and then names from a hat. In the twelve-hour period that followsthe drawing, each composer must produce a fully-notated composition specifically writtenfor their own ensemble. Once the twelve-hour time period has elapsed, the compositions arehanded over to the ensembles, who have twelve hours to practice and prepare thecompositions for performance. At the end of this 24-hour process, a concert will be heldwhere all of the new compositions will be premiered. The StaffSamuel Burt, artistic directorCory Kasprzyk, booking and logistical managerRose Hammer, performance liaisonGeorge Lam, public relationsAndrew Cole, head of promotionsOrganizers EmeritusRob Hamilton, co-founder, original website designerJ.
