Box 16.2. PRISMAThe PRISMA (reflecting the positive diversities of European priorities <strong>for</strong> research and measurement in endof-life<strong>care</strong>) project (8) aims to deliver an integrated programme to coordinate research priorities and practiceon end-of-life <strong>care</strong>. Eleven partners in eight EU countries, plus involvement from a pan-African partner, areparticipating. The programme involves drawing together research on end-of-life <strong>care</strong> from the collaboratingcentres. Eight work packages are underway to identify cultural differences in end-of-life <strong>care</strong>, establish acollaborative research agenda in<strong>for</strong>med by public and clinical priorities and compile best practices and resources<strong>for</strong> measuring quality. One work package focuses specifically on measurement tools and needs assessment innursing homes.Box 16.3. OPCAREThe OPCARE (Optimising Cancer Patient Care through the Advancement of Research and Education) project (9)aims to improve <strong>care</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>people</strong> with cancer in the last days of life by exploring, sharing and collating currentknowledge and practice in key themes: signs and symptoms of approaching death; end-of-life decisions;complementary com<strong>for</strong>t <strong>care</strong>; psychological and psychosocial support to the <strong>people</strong> with cancer and theirfamilies and <strong>care</strong>givers; and voluntary service. It aims to reach consensus on the optimum <strong>care</strong> to be deliveredin this phase, to identify gaps in the knowledge and to develop innovative research protocols to addressthose gaps. The objective is also to make recommendations <strong>for</strong> the further development of the Liverpool CarePathway <strong>for</strong> the Dying Patient Framework in an international context.Box 16.4. Best practices in palliative <strong>care</strong> in EuropeThis project lasts until October 2010 and aims: to describe the different models <strong>for</strong> the delivery of palliative <strong>care</strong>in the seven participating European countries; to list multidisciplinary guidelines and indicators concerned withthe early initiation of palliative <strong>care</strong> and adoption of an integrated approach to the delivery of palliative <strong>care</strong>; toestablish quality indicators <strong>for</strong> the early initiation and integrated delivery of palliative <strong>care</strong>; and to identify bestpractices in the early initiation and integrated delivery of palliative <strong>care</strong> using the core set of indicators.Source: European Association <strong>for</strong> <strong>Palliative</strong> Care [web site] (10).50
