A.P. Calculus 12Website: http://public.sd38.bc.ca/~niversenEmail: niversen@sd38.bc.caThis course will prepare you for first semester calculus at university, (plus even a little of secondsemester) and help to make your first while at university a little easier for you. Even if youunderstand only half of what we cover in this course, that is half that you won't have to strugglewith in university!RECOMMENDED SUPPLIES: Your own graphing calculator. The AP exam is DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY so that a studentwithout a graphing calculator can not get a perfect score. No other types of calculatorsare allowed on the AP exam. I would suggest a TI-86, a TI-84 or a TI-83 for this course. (Ofcourse, Casio and Sharp models will do as well) A 3” binder (you will have a lot of notes and handouts in this course)~keep clear notes in this course, they will be invaluable when you take calculus in university!!~About the A.P. exam: Our course is called “AP Calculus – AB” You may use this exam to gain a University credit that allows you to bypass first semestercalculus. The exam is scaled to be graded out of a mark from 1 to 5 To receive credit for math 100 (UBC) you will need a score of 4 (out of 5) To receive credit for math 120 (UBC- honours) you will need a score of 5 (out of 5) A score of 3 or below does not earn you credit at a post-secondary institution, but is a pass To receive credit for both math 100 & 101 (or 120 & 121) see me for details ( BC program)You do not have to use the AP credit. The exam may be written for the experience. Some Universities use the AP exam mark as one of your entrance marks from high school.A score of 5 is equivalent to a 96%A score of 4 is equivalent to 86%A score of 3 is equivalent to 80%About the University Challenge Exam (for BC Universities only): You may use this exam to gain a University credit that not only allows you to bypass firstsemester calculus, but the mark will show up on your transcript at University. It will be written in June this year Students in this course DO NOT have to write the challenge exam The mark that you get on the challenge exam can directly be transferred to your transcriptat: UBC, SFU, UNBC or UVic. You do not have to use the exam mark for your University transcript This exam is a real University final exam, and may be written just for the experience. Some Universities use the Challenge Exam mark as one of your entrance marks from highschool.MARKS:Assignments & Quizzes: 30%Tests 40%Final Exam 30%There may be assignments over the course of the semester. There will be quizzes weekly.

There will be several unit tests. You will have 3 chances at the writing of the final exam. Your score will be the best of thethree attempts, or 100% of your mark can be based on the average of the three finals. Marks may or may not be scaled for the FIRST reporting period, as this is a university levelcourse. The range for a grade of "A" will be at approximately 80 to 86%, and all othergrades will be scaled accordingly. If you have regular attendance, and try your best to understand all of the material that wecover in class (demonstrated by your effort in this course), you are guaranteed a grade of"C-" or better. Practice Tests will be given for each unit, in addition to review handouts. It is in your bestinterest to do as much practice for each test as you can. This is not an easy course ! If you are away the day of an exam, you will not be given a chance to rewrite. If you have accumulated 5 or more absences, no quiz marks will be omitted, and noassignments will be accepted late. Make sure that you have regular attendance to thisclass. CHEATING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. IF ANY ASSIGNMENT / QUIZ / OR TEST IS IN QUESTION,BOTH THE COPIED PAPER AND THE PAPER IT WAS COPIED FROM WILL RECEIVE A SCORE OFZERO. I strongly encourage you to work together on assignments and homework, but donot lend out your work. Working together means helping each other, but not turning inidentical papers! have fun , good luck, and enjoy !!!PS: It is extremely important that you keep up with the material that we cover in this class. It isvery easy to fall behind. I suggest finding a buddy or forming a study group that meetsregularly to do homework, and study for tests etc. ( MATH PARTIES !!!)
