I got a question back in 1999:- Can this be built in Malmö,Sweden?

Santiago Calatrava, Architect– This is the idea behind the construction!3/12/2012

But the challenge could havebeen even greater……3/12/2012

Fire protection became a keyfactor from the beginning! The challenge• Tallest building in Malmö were 80 meters• One stairwell or no building at all?• Could the fire authority accept their role?• Fire protection during construction? And many more such as:• Other threats (terrorist attacs were an issue even before 2001…)• The architect (artist, structural engineer & foreigner…)

The Swedish building codemade everything possibleTwo different possibillities1. Prescriptive rules2. Performance based (since 1995)Or, in reality, a combination of them both.Key factor for succes:We used the possibility to choose the most convenientmethod in the early stage of the project.

Our solution

Level 53 & 54The final challenge

Analytical design with CFD(FDS from NIST for the nerds )

Restricted use became thesolution for 53 & 54– Maximum of 120 people (60+60 or 80+40)– Not for partying– 1,2 m doors– Instruction to the guests (Airplane style)

Analytical design– Evacuation– Fire alarm– Sound system for evacuation– Pressurized stairway– Fire elevator– Stand-by system– Combined sprinkler – stand pipe– Fire zone– Load bearing capacity– Surface finishing– Central Control Station– Ventilation3/12/2012
