NANAIMO CURLING CENTRE TOHOST WILLIAMS MOVING &STORAGE <strong>2012</strong> BC MIXEDOnce more the Nanaimo Curling Centre willplay <strong>host</strong> <strong>to</strong> a full slate of competitive teamsvying for the chance <strong>to</strong> represent BC at anational playdown – this time the MixedChampionships.Still <strong>to</strong> be decided at the time of writing arethe names of the actual curlers. Regionalcompetitions will be held February 24-26 inmost areas of the province, with theexception of Regions 5 and 6, whichencompass the Cariboo and Northwest, andwhere playdowns were held February 4 and5. The winning team curls out of PrinceGeorge, and consists of Nigel McInnis, skip;Wanda Johnson, third; Jason Dalio, second;and Erin Young lead.There will be two teams qualifying from theKootenays. The Tom Buchy foursome,previous BC champions from Kimberley, willbe trying once again <strong>to</strong> claim a berth inRegions 1 and 2. Their competition includestwo teams from Grand Forks, one fromCres<strong>to</strong>n and two more entries from theirKimberley clubmates.In the Kamloops/Okanagan contest, sixteams – one each from Kamloops, Kelowna,Pentic<strong>to</strong>n, Revels<strong>to</strong>ke, Salmon Arm, andVernon – will compete for the single entry <strong>to</strong>represent Regions 3, 4 and 7 at theNanaimo event.On the Coast, the number 13 is the charm.Thirteen teams from both Vancouver Islandand the mainland are set <strong>to</strong> win one of fourberths <strong>to</strong> the provincial event. The sevenmainland entries include last year’schampion, Doug Marshall and his team fromthe Chilliwack Curling Club. Two from RoyalCity in New Westminster, two from Langley,a single entry from Richmond and one morefrom Chilliwack round out the group. Ofinterest <strong>to</strong> Nanaimo fans will be thepresence of Canadian bronze medalist KesaVan Osch playing lead for Craig Lepine ofLangley.Island curlers include the Wes Craig andDave Shortill teams from Kerry Park, RyanScott of Vic<strong>to</strong>ria, Jason Montgomery,Duncan, and two potential “home <strong>to</strong>wnfavourites:” Joe Green with BrendaRidgway, Kevin Weinrich and LeslieShearer, plus Mark Knutson, Nicole Backe,Keith Clarke, and Toni Lepore.NEW FORMAT FOR WILLIAMS MOVING & STORAGE BC MIXED CHAMPIONSHIPSFans of the Mixed Provincials will noticea change in format. Originally a roundrobinplaydown with a <strong>to</strong>p-three finalround, the <strong>2012</strong> event is triple knockout,followed by a Page Playdown involvingthe winners of A and B events in theone-two spots, and the two semi-finalsof C event in third and fourth places.Teams have been seeded <strong>to</strong> match anInterior qualifier with a Coast foursomein the initial games of A event.
