President’s Report<br />

It is hard to believe that the curling<br />
season is almost over, and what a<br />
season it has been! With the newly<br />
amalgamated club, we have seen the<br />
divisions working together on<br />
banquets, bonspiels, projects, etc. It<br />
was encouraging to see curlers signing<br />
the volunteer form, listing the areas<br />
they were ready to help with. We<br />
have so much talent in our <strong>Club</strong> we<br />
will have no problem reaching all of<br />
our goals. We are eagerly awaiting<br />
news of our grant application for the<br />
elevator project, and all signs point to<br />
that being successful and underway<br />
very shortly.<br />
A quick look at the Provincial<br />
Qualifiers board currently on display<br />
in the lobby also shows the success<br />
that many of our playdown teams<br />
have enjoyed – from Juvenile Girls (2<br />
teams!) to Masters Men and many in<br />
between. The success of our Junior<br />
program is especially encouraging<br />
since this is the future of our club. I<br />
recently arrived at the <strong>Club</strong> while the<br />
Juniors were in the building and it was<br />
busy to say the least! Our volunteers<br />
and staff members who work hard<br />
with this group are to be commended<br />
for their efforts.<br />
It is also that time of year that our<br />
Nominations Committee will be<br />
looking for candidates for the<br />
<strong>2009</strong>/2010 board. If you are<br />
interested in running for the board,<br />
please see me or Tracey Newlands.<br />
Good luck to all curlers who will<br />
be playing in our <strong>Club</strong> Championship<br />
playoffs. The winner of the men’s<br />
and ladies divisions will have the<br />
opportunity of playing in the BC<br />
<strong>Club</strong> Challenge competition, and<br />
the possibility of the Pacific<br />
International Cup. These are great<br />
e v e n t s , a n d o u r c l u b<br />
representatives have had great<br />
success in the past.<br />
Manager’s Report<br />

The season is near completion<br />
with a few leagues to finish off,<br />
<strong>Club</strong> Championships to complete,<br />
and wind-up banquets and awards.<br />
Good luck to all those participating<br />
in their club championships!<br />
It has been a steady year of user<br />
groups coming out to try curling<br />
this year; many have expressed an<br />
interest in curling steady next year.<br />
Our junior program is producing<br />
some new adult curlers by getting<br />
Moms and Dads curling in the<br />
Family Spiel. Congratulations to<br />
the Keith Clarke team winning 1 st<br />
place. Many thanks to Dorina<br />
Medland and Kellie Rice for<br />
organizing it this year.<br />
The Stixs & Stones Spiel<br />
organized by Paul Gorack,<br />
Elizabeth Girard and her daughter<br />
Andrea was very successful with<br />
more funds where raised for the<br />
e l e v a t o r p r o j e c t .<br />
There was great feedback on the<br />
Parallel Bonspiel with some very<br />
positive comments on the format at<br />
the prize presentations. Joe Pulak<br />
and his committee did a great job<br />
on that spiel.<br />
Dick Sharples and his crew pulled<br />
together three Senior Mens Spiels this<br />
year - in November, in January (Inter-<br />
<strong>Club</strong>) and in <strong>February</strong> (68+). Sharon<br />
Brown and her committee of<br />
renowned Senior Ladies put together<br />
the Beach Party. There were some<br />
awesome costumes and great curling<br />
by all.<br />
The NLCC bonspiel Mardi Gras<br />
chaired by Joanne Phillips and<br />
Marg Blackley and their committee<br />
put on another great spiel. Great<br />
decorations, prizes, dinner, breakfast<br />
etc. many thanks to all those that<br />
make that spiel one of the best ladies<br />
spiel on the Island.<br />
Ron Kaneen filled a Saturday<br />
with the Special Olympics Regionals<br />
the end of January. Nancy Stern and<br />
her School District buddies had the<br />
building rocking Jan 24 th with a one<br />
day mini spiel.<br />

Island Mens Regionals.<br />
Dave and Penny Perpeluk have<br />
done a fabulous job on the Poker<br />
Nights this year. To date they have<br />
raised over $3,000. The members<br />
coming out to deal on Poker Nights<br />
has been very much appreciated, and<br />
I understand they have a blast doing<br />
it. Next Poker Night is Saturday<br />
April 18. Dave has become our 50/50<br />

Junior Report<br />

What a wonderful year it has been<br />
for Junior <strong>Curling</strong> in <strong>Nanaimo</strong>. We<br />
sent 5 Juvenile teams to Regionals<br />
and two qualified for Provincials in<br />
Winfield on Spring Break.<br />
Congratulations to both teams. We<br />
are also pleased to acknowledge<br />
Cassie Leonard as our Most<br />
Improved Female Curler and Griffin<br />
Woodward as our Most Improved<br />
Male Curler this year and<br />
congratulations goes to Brendan<br />
Booth who was voted Most<br />
Sportsmanlike Curler and was<br />
presented with a Dean Joanisse Print.<br />
As the Junior Program grows;<br />
more and more of our Juniors are<br />
playing in the <strong>Club</strong> leagues and<br />
bonspiels. It is a pleasure to watch<br />
the intergenerational play that is<br />
taking place in our <strong>Club</strong>. The curlers<br />
in <strong>Nanaimo</strong> have opened their hearts<br />
and wallets as well as dedicated their<br />
time to their Juniors on many<br />
occasions and the kids can’t say thank<br />
you enough.<br />
We held our Wind-up pizza party<br />
on March 2 nd <strong>2009</strong> and as always the<br />
last two weeks of curling is the time<br />
when BC Skills Awards testing is<br />
completed. The BC Skills Awards<br />
Program is a five (5) level series of<br />
tests of increasing skill level<br />
difficulty, referred to as Red (Novice),<br />
Blue (Junior), Bronze (Intermediate),<br />
Silver (Intermediate) and Gold<br />
(Advanced). Crests will be awarded<br />
for successful completion of each<br />
level.<br />
In closing I would like to<br />
thank Ron Kaneen, Bob<br />
Franklin, Cindy Van Osch,<br />
C o l l e e n W o r l d , W a l l y<br />
Funk, Blair Franklin and Kevin<br />
Franklin for all their work, and<br />
the support and enthusiasm that<br />
they bring to the Junior program.<br />
I would also like to thank all the<br />
parents who have supported their<br />
children and have helped make<br />
the 2008/<strong>2009</strong> curling season a<br />
success. We hope to see everyone<br />
back again next season.<br />

I’d like to thank all of those<br />
curlers that have helped support<br />
all our teams going to Provincials this<br />
year. The presentations that Jessie<br />
Whittam, Joanne Phillips and the<br />
various divisions of the <strong>Club</strong> put<br />
together, were very special to all of us<br />
that were so fortunate to be<br />
representing the <strong>Nanaimo</strong> <strong>Curling</strong><br />
<strong>Club</strong>. It is a very special <strong>Club</strong> and it<br />
is its members that make it so.<br />
I would like to thank all the staff at<br />
the <strong>Nanaimo</strong> <strong>Curling</strong> <strong>Club</strong> for a great<br />
season and all the support they have<br />
shown me this year. I could not have<br />
done it without you. Bring your<br />
friends out next year as we have some<br />
ice to fill! Have a fantastic summer<br />

Family Bonspiel<br />

This year's Family Bonspiel roared<br />
and rocked with a record 20 teams and<br />
over 80 curlers turning up to play on<br />
March 7. It was a fun-filled day with<br />
each team getting four, four-end games,<br />
a delicious banquet and lots of prizes.<br />

Franklin and Janaya Jesperson<br />
dominated A event. B event was<br />
claimed by Clyde Wicks, Tim Wicks,<br />
Cheri Wicks and Steve Parry. Wally<br />
Funk's team of Kalen MacLennan,<br />
Murray Funk, and Nicolaas de Beeld<br />
grabbed the C event and Christine<br />
Patterson and her team of Mike<br />
Kenefick, Elaine Clouthier and Mike<br />
van Santen were victorious in D event.<br />
The family bonspiel committee<br />
would like to thank Ron Kaneen for<br />
making up the draw and supervising the<br />
day of curling, Harry Whittam for<br />
making up the team-name placards, and<br />
Ken Medland for registering the teams.<br />
Thanks also to Sean and his catering<br />
team for a marvelous banquet. Kudos<br />
also to Country Grocer, <strong>Nanaimo</strong> Parks<br />
and Recreation, Cottonwood Golf, Boo<br />
Clothing, Brechin Lanes Bowling and<br />
Steve Marshall Ford for being generous<br />
sponsors this year. We would also like<br />
to acknowledge NCC manager Denise<br />
Wood, who started the first family<br />
bonspiel ten years ago.<br />
The goal of the family bonspiel is to<br />
give people a chance to have a funfilled<br />
outing with their family members<br />
whether they have curled before or not.<br />
It was so exciting and gratifying to see<br />
so many people turn out for the day<br />
from completely new, to veteran senior<br />
curlers. Ken Medland won the prize<br />
for oldest curler in attendance<br />
while Jarrod Nobel picked up<br />
the prize for youngest curler with<br />
a 73-year span. We hope to see all<br />
of you out next year for the 11 th<br />
Annual Family Fun 'Spiel.<br />
Senior Ladies’ Report<br />

The Senior Ladies Bonspiel<br />
held Feb 16-18 was a great<br />
success again with 28 teams from<br />
up and down the Island taking part in<br />
the festivities. The theme of Beach<br />
Party was lots of fun and the curlers<br />
dressed accordingly at the<br />
Wednesday evening banquet. The<br />
club was decorated by the hard<br />
working bonspiel committee and<br />
made you feel like you were on the<br />
beaches of Hawaii. The kitchen help<br />
included lots of men from the club<br />
and the meal, picnic style, was<br />
wonderful.<br />

Junior Report<br />

The <strong>Nanaimo</strong> rink of skip Blair<br />
Dudeck, third Nicolas DeBeeld,<br />
second Matthew van Osch, lead<br />
George Benson, and coach Bob<br />
Franklin participated in the Junior<br />
Mens' Coastal Playdowns November<br />
29-December 1 in Victoria.<br />
Their first game was against the<br />
Brian Kedziora rink which eventually<br />
won the B.C. Championship and tied<br />
for fifth place at the Canadian<br />
Nationals with a six wins-six losses<br />
record. Kedziora was also B.C.<br />
Champion two years ago. This game<br />
was very close with Dudeck leading by<br />
one after five ends, but Kedziora blew<br />
it wide open in the sixth with a fourender.<br />
The Dudeck team won their<br />
second over Victoria's Fox rink in a<br />
close game. They then got a bye to the<br />
B final but lost in another close game.<br />
Dropping down to their last chance<br />
in the "C" event they played the<br />
Klymchuck team on the Monday<br />
morning. They were tied after nine ends<br />
but Klymchuck had the hammer and he<br />
had to make his last shot for his win.<br />
Dudeck made it to the<br />
Provincials two years ago as a<br />
member of the Kyle Sedola rink.<br />
The Dudeck team played in the<br />
Christiansen Collision Cash<br />
League and the Tuesday night<br />
league and have entered mens'<br />
bonspiels this season. They have<br />
two more years of eligbility for<br />
Junior playdowns and plan to stay<br />
together. The team is sponsored<br />
by Country Grocer at Chase<br />
