President’s Report
by Teri Palynchuk
It is hard to believe that the curling
season is almost over, and what a
season it has been! With the newly
amalgamated club, we have seen the
divisions working together on
banquets, bonspiels, projects, etc. It
was encouraging to see curlers signing
the volunteer form, listing the areas
they were ready to help with. We
have so much talent in our Club we
will have no problem reaching all of
our goals. We are eagerly awaiting
news of our grant application for the
elevator project, and all signs point to
that being successful and underway
very shortly.
A quick look at the Provincial
Qualifiers board currently on display
in the lobby also shows the success
that many of our playdown teams
have enjoyed – from Juvenile Girls (2
teams!) to Masters Men and many in
between. The success of our Junior
program is especially encouraging
since this is the future of our club. I
recently arrived at the Club while the
Juniors were in the building and it was
busy to say the least! Our volunteers
and staff members who work hard
with this group are to be commended
for their efforts.
It is also that time of year that our
Nominations Committee will be
looking for candidates for the
2009/2010 board. If you are
interested in running for the board,
please see me or Tracey Newlands.
Good luck to all curlers who will
be playing in our Club Championship
playoffs. The winner of the men’s
and ladies divisions will have the
opportunity of playing in the BC
Club Challenge competition, and
the possibility of the Pacific
International Cup. These are great
e v e n t s , a n d o u r c l u b
representatives have had great
success in the past.
Manager’s Report
by Denise Wood
The season is near completion
with a few leagues to finish off,
Club Championships to complete,
and wind-up banquets and awards.
Good luck to all those participating
in their club championships!
It has been a steady year of user
groups coming out to try curling
this year; many have expressed an
interest in curling steady next year.
Our junior program is producing
some new adult curlers by getting
Moms and Dads curling in the
Family Spiel. Congratulations to
the Keith Clarke team winning 1 st
place. Many thanks to Dorina
Medland and Kellie Rice for
organizing it this year.
The Stixs & Stones Spiel
organized by Paul Gorack,
Elizabeth Girard and her daughter
Andrea was very successful with
more funds where raised for the
e l e v a t o r p r o j e c t .
There was great feedback on the
Parallel Bonspiel with some very
positive comments on the format at
the prize presentations. Joe Pulak
and his committee did a great job
on that spiel.
Dick Sharples and his crew pulled
together three Senior Mens Spiels this
year - in November, in January (Inter-
Club) and in February (68+). Sharon
Brown and her committee of
renowned Senior Ladies put together
the Beach Party. There were some
awesome costumes and great curling
by all.
The NLCC bonspiel Mardi Gras
chaired by Joanne Phillips and
Marg Blackley and their committee
put on another great spiel. Great
decorations, prizes, dinner, breakfast
etc. many thanks to all those that
make that spiel one of the best ladies
spiel on the Island.
Ron Kaneen filled a Saturday
with the Special Olympics Regionals
the end of January. Nancy Stern and
her School District buddies had the
building rocking Jan 24 th with a one
day mini spiel.
Many thanks to Ken and Isabel
Albrecht, Heather Lindsay, Ron
Kaneen, Bob Baldwin, Harry
Whittam, Frank Voysey and Dennis
from Duncan for looking after the
Island Mens Regionals.
Dave and Penny Perpeluk have
done a fabulous job on the Poker
Nights this year. To date they have
raised over $3,000. The members
coming out to deal on Poker Nights
has been very much appreciated, and
I understand they have a blast doing
it. Next Poker Night is Saturday
April 18. Dave has become our 50/50
Junior Report
by Kellie Rice
What a wonderful year it has been
for Junior Curling in Nanaimo. We
sent 5 Juvenile teams to Regionals
and two qualified for Provincials in
Winfield on Spring Break.
Congratulations to both teams. We
are also pleased to acknowledge
Cassie Leonard as our Most
Improved Female Curler and Griffin
Woodward as our Most Improved
Male Curler this year and
congratulations goes to Brendan
Booth who was voted Most
Sportsmanlike Curler and was
presented with a Dean Joanisse Print.
As the Junior Program grows;
more and more of our Juniors are
playing in the Club leagues and
bonspiels. It is a pleasure to watch
the intergenerational play that is
taking place in our Club. The curlers
in Nanaimo have opened their hearts
and wallets as well as dedicated their
time to their Juniors on many
occasions and the kids can’t say thank
you enough.
We held our Wind-up pizza party
on March 2 nd 2009 and as always the
last two weeks of curling is the time
when BC Skills Awards testing is
completed. The BC Skills Awards
Program is a five (5) level series of
tests of increasing skill level
difficulty, referred to as Red (Novice),
Blue (Junior), Bronze (Intermediate),
Silver (Intermediate) and Gold
(Advanced). Crests will be awarded
for successful completion of each
level.
In closing I would like to
thank Ron Kaneen, Bob
Franklin, Cindy Van Osch,
C o l l e e n W o r l d , W a l l y
Funk, Blair Franklin and Kevin
Franklin for all their work, and
the support and enthusiasm that
they bring to the Junior program.
I would also like to thank all the
parents who have supported their
children and have helped make
the 2008/2009 curling season a
success. We hope to see everyone
back again next season.
(Continued from page 1)
all star – gosh that man can sell.
I’d like to thank all of those
curlers that have helped support
all our teams going to Provincials this
year. The presentations that Jessie
Whittam, Joanne Phillips and the
various divisions of the Club put
together, were very special to all of us
that were so fortunate to be
representing the Nanaimo Curling
Club. It is a very special Club and it
is its members that make it so.
I would like to thank all the staff at
the Nanaimo Curling Club for a great
season and all the support they have
shown me this year. I could not have
done it without you. Bring your
friends out next year as we have some
ice to fill! Have a fantastic summer
everyone.
Family Bonspiel
by Dorina Medland
This year's Family Bonspiel roared
and rocked with a record 20 teams and
over 80 curlers turning up to play on
March 7. It was a fun-filled day with
each team getting four, four-end games,
a delicious banquet and lots of prizes.
Keith Clarke, Jonathan Clarke, Bob
Franklin and Janaya Jesperson
dominated A event. B event was
claimed by Clyde Wicks, Tim Wicks,
Cheri Wicks and Steve Parry. Wally
Funk's team of Kalen MacLennan,
Murray Funk, and Nicolaas de Beeld
grabbed the C event and Christine
Patterson and her team of Mike
Kenefick, Elaine Clouthier and Mike
van Santen were victorious in D event.
The family bonspiel committee
would like to thank Ron Kaneen for
making up the draw and supervising the
day of curling, Harry Whittam for
making up the team-name placards, and
Ken Medland for registering the teams.
Thanks also to Sean and his catering
team for a marvelous banquet. Kudos
also to Country Grocer, Nanaimo Parks
and Recreation, Cottonwood Golf, Boo
Clothing, Brechin Lanes Bowling and
Steve Marshall Ford for being generous
sponsors this year. We would also like
to acknowledge NCC manager Denise
Wood, who started the first family
bonspiel ten years ago.
The goal of the family bonspiel is to
give people a chance to have a funfilled
outing with their family members
whether they have curled before or not.
It was so exciting and gratifying to see
so many people turn out for the day
from completely new, to veteran senior
curlers. Ken Medland won the prize
for oldest curler in attendance
while Jarrod Nobel picked up
the prize for youngest curler with
a 73-year span. We hope to see all
of you out next year for the 11 th
Annual Family Fun 'Spiel.
Senior Ladies’ Report
by Barb Dysart
The Senior Ladies Bonspiel
held Feb 16-18 was a great
success again with 28 teams from
up and down the Island taking part in
the festivities. The theme of Beach
Party was lots of fun and the curlers
dressed accordingly at the
Wednesday evening banquet. The
club was decorated by the hard
working bonspiel committee and
made you feel like you were on the
beaches of Hawaii. The kitchen help
included lots of men from the club
and the meal, picnic style, was
wonderful.
Junior Report
by Ken Medland
The Nanaimo rink of skip Blair
Dudeck, third Nicolas DeBeeld,
second Matthew van Osch, lead
George Benson, and coach Bob
Franklin participated in the Junior
Mens' Coastal Playdowns November
29-December 1 in Victoria.
Their first game was against the
Brian Kedziora rink which eventually
won the B.C. Championship and tied
for fifth place at the Canadian
Nationals with a six wins-six losses
record. Kedziora was also B.C.
Champion two years ago. This game
was very close with Dudeck leading by
one after five ends, but Kedziora blew
it wide open in the sixth with a fourender.
The Dudeck team won their
second over Victoria's Fox rink in a
close game. They then got a bye to the
B final but lost in another close game.
Dropping down to their last chance
in the "C" event they played the
Klymchuck team on the Monday
morning. They were tied after nine ends
but Klymchuck had the hammer and he
had to make his last shot for his win.
Dudeck made it to the
Provincials two years ago as a
member of the Kyle Sedola rink.
The Dudeck team played in the
Christiansen Collision Cash
League and the Tuesday night
league and have entered mens'
bonspiels this season. They have
two more years of eligbility for
Junior playdowns and plan to stay
together. The team is sponsored
