Junior Report
by Kellie Rice
What a wonderful year it has been
for Junior Curling in Nanaimo. We
sent 5 Juvenile teams to Regionals
and two qualified for Provincials in
Winfield on Spring Break.
Congratulations to both teams. We
are also pleased to acknowledge
Cassie Leonard as our Most
Improved Female Curler and Griffin
Woodward as our Most Improved
Male Curler this year and
congratulations goes to Brendan
Booth who was voted Most
Sportsmanlike Curler and was
presented with a Dean Joanisse Print.
As the Junior Program grows;
more and more of our Juniors are
playing in the Club leagues and
bonspiels. It is a pleasure to watch
the intergenerational play that is
taking place in our Club. The curlers
in Nanaimo have opened their hearts
and wallets as well as dedicated their
time to their Juniors on many
occasions and the kids can’t say thank
you enough.
We held our Wind-up pizza party
on March 2 nd 2009 and as always the
last two weeks of curling is the time
when BC Skills Awards testing is
completed. The BC Skills Awards
Program is a five (5) level series of
tests of increasing skill level
difficulty, referred to as Red (Novice),
Blue (Junior), Bronze (Intermediate),
Silver (Intermediate) and Gold
(Advanced). Crests will be awarded
for successful completion of each
level.
In closing I would like to
thank Ron Kaneen, Bob
Franklin, Cindy Van Osch,
C o l l e e n W o r l d , W a l l y
Funk, Blair Franklin and Kevin
Franklin for all their work, and
the support and enthusiasm that
they bring to the Junior program.
I would also like to thank all the
parents who have supported their
children and have helped make
the 2008/2009 curling season a
success. We hope to see everyone
back again next season.
(Continued from page 1)
all star – gosh that man can sell.
I’d like to thank all of those
curlers that have helped support
all our teams going to Provincials this
year. The presentations that Jessie
Whittam, Joanne Phillips and the
various divisions of the Club put
together, were very special to all of us
that were so fortunate to be
representing the Nanaimo Curling
Club. It is a very special Club and it
is its members that make it so.
I would like to thank all the staff at
the Nanaimo Curling Club for a great
season and all the support they have
shown me this year. I could not have
done it without you. Bring your
friends out next year as we have some
ice to fill! Have a fantastic summer
everyone.
