Family Bonspiel
by Dorina Medland
This year's Family Bonspiel roared
and rocked with a record 20 teams and
over 80 curlers turning up to play on
March 7. It was a fun-filled day with
each team getting four, four-end games,
a delicious banquet and lots of prizes.
Keith Clarke, Jonathan Clarke, Bob
Franklin and Janaya Jesperson
dominated A event. B event was
claimed by Clyde Wicks, Tim Wicks,
Cheri Wicks and Steve Parry. Wally
Funk's team of Kalen MacLennan,
Murray Funk, and Nicolaas de Beeld
grabbed the C event and Christine
Patterson and her team of Mike
Kenefick, Elaine Clouthier and Mike
van Santen were victorious in D event.
The family bonspiel committee
would like to thank Ron Kaneen for
making up the draw and supervising the
day of curling, Harry Whittam for
making up the team-name placards, and
Ken Medland for registering the teams.
Thanks also to Sean and his catering
team for a marvelous banquet. Kudos
also to Country Grocer, Nanaimo Parks
and Recreation, Cottonwood Golf, Boo
Clothing, Brechin Lanes Bowling and
Steve Marshall Ford for being generous
sponsors this year. We would also like
to acknowledge NCC manager Denise
Wood, who started the first family
bonspiel ten years ago.
The goal of the family bonspiel is to
give people a chance to have a funfilled
outing with their family members
whether they have curled before or not.
It was so exciting and gratifying to see
so many people turn out for the day
from completely new, to veteran senior
curlers. Ken Medland won the prize
for oldest curler in attendance
while Jarrod Nobel picked up
the prize for youngest curler with
a 73-year span. We hope to see all
of you out next year for the 11 th
Annual Family Fun 'Spiel.
Senior Ladies’ Report
by Barb Dysart
The Senior Ladies Bonspiel
held Feb 16-18 was a great
success again with 28 teams from
up and down the Island taking part in
the festivities. The theme of Beach
Party was lots of fun and the curlers
dressed accordingly at the
Wednesday evening banquet. The
club was decorated by the hard
working bonspiel committee and
made you feel like you were on the
beaches of Hawaii. The kitchen help
included lots of men from the club
and the meal, picnic style, was
wonderful.
