daily for a week after each immunization in monkeys. For rabbit experiments, only local<br />

reactions were recorded (Aye-Aye-Myint et al., 1998).<br />

Biological properties <strong>of</strong> the toxoid on storage<br />

Biological properties <strong>of</strong> the toxoid <strong>of</strong> varying ages were shown in figure (1).<br />

Formal toxoiding <strong>of</strong> the venom resulted in reduction <strong>of</strong> 15-fold in lethal, 4-fold in<br />

coagulant, 22-fold in defibrinogenating, 6-fold in haemorrhagic <strong>and</strong> 10-fold in necrotic<br />

activities. A 44-fold reduction in capillary permeability increasing activity <strong>of</strong> the toxoid<br />

was observed from 4 months onwards. Further two-fold reduction in heamorrhagic <strong>and</strong><br />

necrotic activities <strong>of</strong> the toxoid was observed from six months onwards. (Tun-Pe et al.,<br />

1995b)<br />

Quantitative decrease in number <strong>of</strong> precipitin b<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> protein b<strong>and</strong>s in SDS-PAGE<br />

electrophoresis was observed when the toxoid aged (Fig. 2)<br />
