77ConclusionCollaborative landscape-scale forest restoration is a new, hopeful investmentin both landscapes and communities. It values a reciprocal attitude to landas opposed to one that only takes from the land. Collaborative landscapescaleforest restoration also seeks to economically reward the communityfor its ongoing participation in the process. The CFLRP is an excellentexample, and model, of a federal agency and regional stakeholders leadingin a direction that will yield vast landscape improvements, while providingeconomic assistance to the rural communities most affected by wildfire andadverse economic conditions.Despite this progress, stakeholders and policymakers should not expectforest restoration to be an economic silver bullet without some significantevolution in the marketplace for ecosystem services. This is a challenge forall involved and will take considerable time, will, and effort. Collaborativesshould also consider monitoring economic activities not only to provideinformation to refine restoration activities but to also ensure that unintendedeconomic consequences do not happen, such as timber productionmasquerading as “restoration” in areas that need little, if any, logging.Ultimately, the challenge in achieving collaborative forest restoration maybe maintaining the authenticity of restoration projects and adhering to boththe ecological and economic principles that have set ecological restorationapart from other forest management practices.
