SPORTSHORTS TERMS 3 & 4 - 2008SPORTS ABILITY<strong>Sport</strong>s Ability provides a unique opportunity to develop inclusive sport opportunities <strong>for</strong> young people with <strong>and</strong>without disabilities. It allows you, in lessons, to cater <strong>for</strong> students with a wide range of abilities. <strong>Sport</strong>s Abilityprovides the basis <strong>for</strong> the integration of all students.<strong>Sport</strong>s Ability is presented in a flexible <strong>for</strong>mat that enables it to be used in a variety of school settings. It can beutilised to support existing curriculum <strong>for</strong> the delivery of Physical Education <strong>and</strong> <strong>Sport</strong>. <strong>Sport</strong>s Ability can providethe basis <strong>for</strong> an inclusive sport carnival or to provide young people with disabilities to participate in existing sportcompetitions.<strong>Sport</strong>s Ability adopts a social or environmental approach to the involvement of young people with a disability. Thisapproach concentrates on the ways in which teachers, coaches <strong>and</strong> sports leaders can adjust, adapt <strong>and</strong> modifythe way in which an activity is delivered rather than focus on an individual’s disability.The <strong>Sport</strong>s Ability program is based around five activities:Boccia is a bowls-typetarget game played at theParalympics. It is suitable<strong>for</strong> use across a school site.Boccia is played indoors <strong>and</strong>can be played all year round.Table cricket is adynamic table versionof cricket. It is playedon a table <strong>and</strong> issuitable <strong>for</strong> students ofall ages <strong>and</strong> allabilities.Goalball is a sport developed <strong>for</strong>players who have a visualimpairment; an exciting invasiongame introducing new challengesto both sighted <strong>and</strong> visionimpaired players. Goal Ball is aParalympic <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> byintroducing it to the school settingmore young people are exposed<strong>and</strong> the sport can grow.Sitting volleyball isa seated version ofvolleyball. This isan activity that canbe enjoyed byplayers of all ages<strong>and</strong> abilitiesPolybat is an accessible version of table tennis.Polybat is can be played on any table. Ideally it is suited to being played on a tabletennis table.
