SPORTSHORTS TERMS 3 & 4 - 2008Michael Wright MPMinister for Recreation,Sport and RacingWelcome to the second edition of Sportshorts for 2008.Recently, the Office for Recreation and Sport partnered with UniSA to gain a betterunderstanding of children’s attitudes with respect to sport. When children were asked abouttheir sporting involvement, the most significant finding that applied across the board to primaryand secondary boys and girls, city and country, was the desire to play with friends. Further, being “good” at sport wasn’t the key motivating factor we thought it would be. Playing withfriends and having parental support were the two most important factors from a child’sperspective. As parents and teachers, it is important to keep these findings in mind when planning for andproviding junior sport. The upcoming Olympics and Paralympics provide an ideal opportunity tointroduce new sports and activities for children to explore and have fun with. The excitement of the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics is sure to overflow into the schoolcorridors, courts and ovals. This provides a great opportunity for the whole school community tocheer on our athletes and share the pride of their achievements. South Australians will berepresented in many sports including rowing, kayaking, basketball, beach volleyball and aerialgymnastics.Sporting organisations have reported significant spikes in enquiries and memberships followingprevious Olympic and Paralympic campaigns, so why not invite local clubs to partner with yourschool to create pathways for ongoing involvement. The benefits of sharing facilities and humanresources, keeping the kids with friendship groups and involving parents can create asustainable and highly rewarding experience. This edition of Sportshorts provides an ideal tool to help you plan such programs across yourschool. Inside you will find over 43 sporting organisations offering a variety of programsincluding introductory sessions, skill development and officiating courses for juniors. Theseorganisations can also help link your school to its nearest club or facility. The State Government’s be active initiative, led by the Office for Recreation and Sport, continues to encourage all South Australians to “take every opportunity to be active”. Ourresearch shows that awareness and understanding of the be active message is at an all timehigh. Our challenge is to now translate this awareness into ongoing participation in sport, recreation and physical activity.Beijing 08 can be used as a spur to get children and their families more involved in sport, soplease think laterally about how your school can use the Olympics and Paralympics to helpbuild a more active South Australia.Once again, I offer my sincere thanks to all the teachers, students, volunteers, parents andadministrators who work together to promote physical activity throughout the community. Yourenthusiastic efforts to provide quality experiences for this generation contribute to developingthe individual, the community and ultimately our nation.

SPORTSHORTS TERMS 3 & 4 - 2008Keeping Children Safe in Recreation and SportA handy resource for volunteers who help with school sport. The efforts of community volunteers who assist schools by taking on the roles of sport coaches, managers, officials, referees and supervisors, deserve our thanks and commendation. Without their valued contribution, school sport could not operate to the extent it currently does.In recognizing this invaluable support, the Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS), with the assistance of FamiliesSA, is pleased to offer a new resource booklet titled Keeping Children Safe in Recreation and Sport to helpcommunity volunteers better understand the issues and responsibilities surrounding child protection in the sportsetting.Schools and sports coordinators have a duty of care to ensure their sport volunteers are kept informed and awareof their responsibilities to ensure the safety and well-being of all young participants under their care.In a straightforward and non-threatening manner, this booklet provides important information for sports volunteersby providing information and checklists that help explain their legal obligation to report any suspected child abuseand/or neglect. It is hoped that by clarifying the issues up front and in a positive fashion, our school sport volunteers will feel morecomfortable and confident in continuing to volunteer their services. The ultimate outcome is more young peopleparticipating in a quality, fun and safe sporting environment. The booklet can be downloaded from the ORS website at www.recsport.sa.gov.au/resourcespublications/resources-publications.23
