PE DepartmentDorset <strong>School</strong>s’ BiathlonChampionships 14th October 2012Twenty Five Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe athletes spenta sunny Sunday at Leweston <strong>School</strong>on Sunday 14 October, representingthe school in the Dorset <strong>School</strong>s’Biathlon Championships and boy didwe represent Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe in spirit andresults! <strong>The</strong>re were 310 competitors intotal so we dominated a large proportion<strong>of</strong> the entries! For those who are notfamiliar with the 5 disciplines associatedwith the Modern Pentathlon, a biathlonusually involves a swim and run, both<strong>of</strong> which are separate races ie. thereis no transition between disciplines asyou would see in a Triathlon. For Year 7the distances for competition were 50mswim and 500m run and for Year’s 8 to13, a 100m swim and 1000m run.For every student, their races, times(including some personal bests) andrankings in Dorset are all achievementsto be proud <strong>of</strong>. From the student whosaid ‘I just want to do well for Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe’to the next achieving 2nd place in theirage group, I was proud <strong>of</strong> every singleone for putting in their best efforts. Notonly this their support for each otherand indeed the teacher’s race, wasphenomenal!<strong>The</strong> scores from the top 3 students inthe same age group from the sameDorset <strong>School</strong> are combined togetherto produce a team score: Year 7 Girls(Niamh McLeish, Jenna Kirley and EllaRapley) placed 2nd as a team; Year 7Boys (Leo Kindred, Tom Gillespie andJoshua Hamblett-Edwards) placed4th as a team; Year 8, Tamsin Edgeachieved 2nd as an individual and withCaitlyn Oldham and Olivia Warwick(also Year 8 Girls), the girls placed 5thas a team; Lewis Pearson (Year 8) alsoplaced 2nd as an individual; Year 9 Girls(Hope Horsfield, Florence Swan andDaniella Edge) placed 1st as a team;Year 10 / 11 Girls (Elsie Emery, AnnaBurleigh and Abi Dare) placed 2nd as ateam, whilst Abi also achieved 3rd as anindividual; Year 12, Ben Fowler achieved2nd as an individual. 13 medals in total!Well done to all athletes, we hope thatmany <strong>of</strong> you are successful in qualifyingfor the National <strong>School</strong>s’ Biathlon Semi-Finals in January. Three teams represented theschool at the English <strong>School</strong>s SwimmingAssociation South West regional relayGala at Millfield <strong>School</strong> in Somerset on26 September and at the Dorset <strong>School</strong>sGala in <strong>The</strong> Purbeck <strong>School</strong> on 27September.Up against some stiff competitionfrom larger schools such as Millfield,which is a renowned Centre <strong>of</strong>Excellence for Sport and PlymouthCollege, famous for its Olympic Teamswimmers achievements this summer,the Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe swimmers were notdaunted and battled their way totop three positions in all their heats,including first place in the WomensJunior 200m Medley. <strong>The</strong> swimmerswere also able to watch some top classswimmers in action including the 15 yearold Lithuanian Olympic gold medallistRuta Meilutyte swimming for PlymouthCollege.<strong>The</strong> teams were organised andmanaged by Year 12 student HannahPullinger:Junior Girls (Yr 7-9): Hope Horsfield,Susan Ross, Tamsin Edge, DaniellaEdge and Florence Swan.Junior Boys (Yr 7-9): Jamie Pullinger,Iain Ross, Lewis Pearson and RyanAdair.Intermediate Girls: (Yr10-11): Abi Dare,Abi Speake, Mollie Simpson, and ElsieEmery.Thanks to Mrs Cozens for her time andpatience in spending two whole dayssupporting us and driving the mini-bus!Hannah Pullinger12RJV<strong>The</strong> Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe <strong>School</strong> and Uplymeand Lyme Regis Cricket Club Awards2012.<strong>The</strong> school welcomed David Jones fromthe Uplyme Cricket Club committeewho presented the awards donated bythe club. Before the presentations tookplace David congratulated the teams<strong>of</strong> boys and girls who had successfullyrepresented the school and the clubduring the 2012 season.<strong>The</strong> outstanding team performance <strong>of</strong>the season went to the Under 13 girls’team who won the Dorset Games inan exciting final played at Dean Court,Bournemouth. Captained by FreidaHall Hickman, the squad includedVerity Fuller, Izzy Helston, Ella Harvey,Georgie Harwood, Lottie Rouse, SophieSimpson, Erin Simpson and JessHodge. Players from the both A andB teams received certificates for theirparticipation in the preliminary roundsand the finals along with the winnerstrophy, shield and medals.<strong>The</strong> girls managed to avoid the rain andplay all <strong>of</strong> the games but the boys werenot so lucky and too many games werelost to the awful wet summer weather.Medals went to the following players:Under 11BattingDaley Holmes. Daley also played for thefull Dorset County side.BowlingTristan O’Leary Tristan also played forthe West Dorset District sideFieldingLeo KindredMost ImprovedTom UreUnder 13Record Played 6 Won 5 Lost 1BattingHarry Felgate. Harry averaged 33 andalso played for West DorsetBowlingGeorge Merritt. George took 12 wicketsand also played for West DorsetFieldingTyler Wellman. Tyler took 6 catches andalso played for West Dorset and<strong>The</strong> Uplyme 2nd XIMost improvedHarry DayUnder 15Record Played 6 Won 5 Lost 1. <strong>The</strong>one loss was in the quarter finals <strong>of</strong> theCounty club cup against Broadstone, aside strewn with county players.<strong>The</strong> team came within 3 runs <strong>of</strong> victoryafter a fine innings <strong>of</strong> 47 from JakeTansley.BattingSam Farrow. Sam scored 150 runs at anaverage <strong>of</strong> 50. Sam also played for thefull Dorset county side.BowlingRhys Davies. Rhys took 14 wickets andalso played for the Uplyme 2ndXI taking12 wickets at senior level.FieldingAlfie Belworthy. Alfie also played forthe Uplyme 2nd XI and the Sunday XI
