It wasthe opinion of the committee to make the competition a“net” only format. This NetherlandsOpera production is a liverecording of the May 1992celebration performance ofthe 200th anniversary ofRossini’s birth. The Barber story is based onthe first of a series of threecomedies by the 18th centuryplaywright Beaumarchais. The plays – Il Barbiere de Siviglia, Le Mariage de Figaro andLa Mére Coupable - are sometimes known as the “Figarotrilogy” because they all star the hero, Figaro, barber andjack of all trades. The opera takes place in 17th centurySeville, and the first performance was in Rome in 1816. ItsClub Informationmusic and humor are as alive today as when the opera wasfirst produced 195 years ago.The Barber’s overture has an interesting history as well. Itseems Rossini was not good at creating new overtures foreach of his operas because the one played in the first TheBarber performance was said to be the same overture usedin earlier Rossini operas. Then, that overture was replacedby another that had also been used in at least two otheroperas. The overture you hear in this production is the onethat has endured as the “official” The Barber overture.
