Conservation of the heritageTARA’s mission embodies the conservation ofAfrica’s fragile rock art heritage. To achieve this, aconservation and management plan was developedfor all the sites on Mfangano. This, coupled withthe Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)recommendations, will aid in the preservation ofthese sites in the years to come. The rationale of bothdocuments rests on prudent utilisation of resourcesto promote development that is truly sustainable.22Marketing and promotion of the heritageThe sustainability of the project relies to a great extent upon the successful promotion ofthe attractions of Suba District as tourism offerings to bothlocal and international tourists. Alongside efforts to conservesites and develop infrastructure, strategies were developedto promote rock art and to carefully market the rock art sitesas tourist destinations as well as a resource for educationand research. Marketing is an all-encompassing activity, which in this case involved product conception, packagingand delivery.SUBA MUSEUM SYMBOL DEVELOPMENTThe making of a brand (and its logo)Successful branding of ACPM is crucial for a stable andrespected institutional identity and for the long-termpromotion of the museum. Developing a logo was achallenge because the ACPM incorporates many differentaspects: rock art, Abasuba culture, peace and reconciliation. To strengthen the brand, we needed to create a stronglogo. Looking at all the rock art images from Suba District, several variations were produced and discussions wereheld – the final logo unanimously agreed upon is imageof the concentric circles of Kwitone. This icon has beenincorporated in all the promotional materials producedduring the project.Typeface options:1. ABASUBA COMMUNITY PEACE MUSEUMAbasuba Community Peace Museum2.
