CHAPTER 3ITEMS OFLEGACYIllus. by M. Phillippi124NOTCHED SPEARThis wickedly barbed longspear is carved out of a solidpiece of bone. When set against a charge, Notched Speardeals an extra 1d6 points of damage on a successfulattack against a charging creature (on top of thenormal double damage).Omen: While you grip Notched Spear’s haft, you canalways hear the sound of the ocean.HISTORYThe Notched Spear was craftedmany thousands of yearsago for one of the greattriton princes of theElemental Plane ofWater. Carved froma single rib of anenormous sea serpent, the spear was powerfullyensorcelled againstthe tritons’ traditionalenemies—the sahuagin. The spear waslost sometime afterthe majority of tritonsmigrated to the MaterialPlane, and it is now mentionedonly in the legends and stories of that aquatic people.(DC 15)A year ago, seers in many coastal towns and portcities began to experience a singular vision in theirdreams—a long, barbed spear carved out of bone, resting on the ocean floor amid a bed of wavingseaweed. A voice in their heads then spoke in Aquan, saying, “The worthy shall be rewarded, and themany-toothed destroyed.” Those who recognizedthe spear as the Notched Spear of triton legend saidthe vision heralded the imminent defeat of thesahuagin and their evil allies below the waves. Mostuniquely, the word for “worthy” used by the divinevoice carries the connotation of a nontriton that hasproven itself to the triton community. Some sagesargue that the one destined to carry the NotchedSpear will be an air breather, a highly controversial(and to some tritons, offensive) idea. (DC 18; Touchof the Sea Gods)The Notched Spear was first forged for a greattriton prince of the Elemental Plane of WaterFive centuries ago, the ravages of a tremendous, fiendish shark destroyed the legendary city of Klordatha,a place where merfolk and tritons once dwelttogether. Sahuagin priestesses of Sekolah summonedthe creature from the black depths of the infernalplanes. At the city’s last stand, its ruler and founder, the triton hero Oceaneid, bore the Notched Spear intobattle against the great shark-fiend. The clash lasted forthree tides. In the end, the shark swallowed Oceaneidwhole even as the triton’s spear pierced its gullet andkilled it. The monster’s carcass, along with the bodyof the king and his legendary weapon, was cast intothe deepest rift in the ocean, the bottom of whichnot even the tritons have seen. (DC 25; Pierce theUnholy Devourer)The Notched Spearwas seized as a trophyby a sahuagin warlordduring one of the firstbattles between the tritonsand sahuagin afterthe tritons’ migrationto the Material Plane.Notched Spear’s loss was aterrible blow to the tritons, and many of their great heroesgave their lives in thesearch for it. After the roll ofmany years, a cunning roguenamed Oceaneid took a smallband of tritons and merfolk intothe dark grottoes and blasphemoustemples of the sea devils. At great cost to theparty, Oceaneid and the merfolk bard Iara escaped, bearing with them the legendary Notched Spear. Thepair received many honors for their deed. Some yearslater, they founded the first communal settlement inhabitedby both their races. That town became the cityof Klordatha. (DC 31; Unity of the Waters)LEGACY RITUALSThree rituals are required to unlock all the abilitiesof Notched Spear.Touch of the Sea Gods: Recovering the NotchedSpear from its resting place on the sea bottom is animpressive feat, but you must also spend an entire daymeditating and praying in a temple dedicated to a godof the sea.
