CRIMSON RUINATIONThis broad-bladed greatsword bears a series of wickedbarbs along the lower third of its blade. The steel hasbeen infused with a substance that gives it a reddishtinge, except for three dwarven runes inlaidin gold. Wrapped in red dragonhide, the grip endsin a pommel crafted of a 3-inch-long dragon fang. The guard is made of a bright red metal shapedinto the likeness of a pair of leathery wings.Nonlegacy Game Statistics: +1 greatsword;Cost 2,350 gp.Omen: Regardless of the ambient temperature, the blade is always warm to the touch, andit occasionally seems to reflect theimage of a great conflagration onits surface, even when no fire ispresent.HISTORYCrimson Ruination was the sword of thelegendary dragonslayer Sir Endrik vanIbnacht. Sir Endrik received the blade asa gift from the dwarf thane Croi Machroiin thanks for slaying the great red wyrmTarkalkatos. According to legend, thedwarven smiths quenched the blade in thegreat beast’s blood and built the hilt from thedragon’s bones and skin. Magic was laid intothe sword to protect the wielder from the fierybreath of dragons, and Sir Endrik would laterclaim the only reason he lived to retire fromthe occupation of dragon hunting was becauseof the sword’s protection. (DC 15)Sir Endrik van Ibnacht makes his firstnotable appearance during the so-calledTarkalkatos Incident some four hundred yearsago (although a study of Ibnachtian folklorereveals many tales of the legendary knightfor several years before that). An ancient reddragon calling itself Tarkalkatos had laidclaim to a vast mountain range as its personalterritory. The dragon’s raids on shipmentsof ore were threatening to choke off the supplyto all the lands east of the mountains, andseveral adventuring bands had already metgruesome fates when they attempted to slaythe beast. The dragon had even routed an entireregiment of elite dwarf soldiers. The mine’sowners were beginning to consider abandoningthe lucrative eastern markets whenSir Endrik rode into the mining town andRed dragons fear the biteof Crimson Ruinationannounced his intentions to slay Tarkalkatos. Thedwarves were clearly skeptical of the knight’s claim, but agreed to allow him a fortnight before closingdown the caravan route. Thirteen days later, Sir Endrikrode back out of the mountains, badly burnedand clinging to his saddle through sheer force ofwill alone. Tarkalkatos was no more. After tendingto the knight’s wounds, the grateful dwarvesforged Crimson Ruination as a gift for Sir Endrikand constructed a monument at the spot where thedragon fell. Years later, after his death, Sir Endrikwas returned to that monument and buried underit. (DC 18; Hero’s Prayer)Discovering Sir Endrik von Ibnacht’shistory prior to the TarkalkatosIncident is difficult, requiring agreat deal of wading through legendsand folk tales that ascribe toSir Endrik not only martial prowess and piety, but also the ability to be in eight placesat once. Most of these stories are certainlyapocryphal, while others are possibly thetrue exploits of other knights, which havebeen credited to Sir Endrik. A codex in theMonastery of St. Cuthbert’s Hand, however, contains enough verifiable evidence that it isalmost certainly a true account of Sir Endrik. This text tells of a fair-haired young man, newlyknighted with “spurs yet untarnished,” who cameto the monastery seeking a place to sleep and awarm meal. He was almost turned away, becausethe monks had been suffering from a strange sicknessthat had claimed several lives, and the abbotfeared a plague had come upon them. The youngknight, who called himself Sir Endrik, told theabbot that it was no plague—the gods had givenhim a vision of the cause of the monastery’swoes. He asked to be shown to the river fromwhich the monks drew their water. After followingthe river back to its source, he revealed anest of young black dragons whose presence hadpoisoned the river. Sir Endrik slew the beasts, andthe monks were troubled by sickness no more.(DC 25; Purify the Draconic Taint)Only one account of Sir Endrik’s early childhoodsurvives, in a manuscript allegedly pennedby the knight himself in his twilight years. In thistext, Sir Endrik reveals that he was bornthe son of a peasant farmer and would havebeen destined for a life of toil and hardshiplike the rest of his family, if not been for anIllus. by W. While gatheringfirewood in the forest near his home, young Endrikheard the sounds of a fierce battle echoing from somewheredeeper in the woods.
