CHAPTER 3ITEMS OFLEGACY72Illus. by D. MartinDIVINE SPARKDivine Spark is a silver holy symbol sculpted toresemble a shining sun. Such an image is sometimesused by clerics and paladins not associated with anyparticular deity. The amulet is small enough to begripped in one hand.Nonlegacy Game Statistics: Silver holy symbol ofresistance +1; Cost 1,550 gp; Weight 1 lb. If you havethe ability to turn undead, all language-speakingcreatures within 30 feet can understand you whenyou speak, regardless of language. This does not giveyou any ability to understand others’ languages.Omen: Divine Spark transforms into yourpreferred holy symbol while you carry it.HISTORYDivine Spark was created whena great swelling evil threatenedto overrun the world andextinguish all human life. Themost powerful necromancers ofthe known realms formedan unholy pact, creatingarmies of ghouls, skeletons, wights, andzombies that wiped outentire regions, adding the slain totheir numbers. Church leaders inthe land could not afford to letbickering and religious differencescome between them anylonger. One man united them—Carthid Ufander. Carthid did notbelieve in any deity, for what godwould allow so many people to sufferat the hands of rabid, amoral creatures that madefeasts out of human flesh? Carthid did believe in somethinggreater than himself, however—the resilienceof humanity. To him, nothing was more divine thanthis one truth. (DC 15)As countries fell to legions of the unliving, fleeingpopulations were pushed farther and farther inland, away from the oceans that could carry them to safety. They were being herded against the largest mountainrange of the region, over which they could notclimb fast enough to escape their pursuers. Carthidknew this. He rode out to each pocket of humanityand urged them to combine forces rather than faceextinction—they could not refuse aid, and they weretoo few in number to make a stand alone. EveryoneCarthid spoke to agreed. When the leaders finally met,Divine Spark brought together those ofpure heart to resist overwhelming evilDivine Spark was able to decipher the language of each, but only from the one who held the holy symbol tolisteners. As a result, those who did not share commontongues could be heard only when one held DivineSpark while the others listened, allowing each personto speak in turn. (DC 20; Talking Stick)In the span of one night, strategies were concocted, forming first, second, and third lines of defense, always keeping the mountains at the united army’sback. Carthid gathered all the holy persons aroundhim the next morning and meditated before battle. When the undead arrived, Divine Spark became thefocal point for every consecrated person present, allowing them to channel their turning abilitiesthrough Carthid and raise his powerby a degree based on all whoremained in their circle. Theywere unstoppable together, cuttinga swath through the undead whereverthey moved. If one clericwas slain, all the others’turning abilities were immediatelyrefreshed. Nodeath was in vain. It quicklybecame obvious the overconfidentnecromancers had stretchedthemselves too thin. That day,the tide of battle shifted withoutany divine intervention. The members of the human nationssurvived by saving themselves.Carthid disappeared into obscurityshortly thereafter, but he has longbeen remembered as the man whosingle-handedly, though only briefly, united all religions.
