(25) Since the signing of a comprehensivepeace agreement in January<strong>20</strong>05 between the Sudanese Governmentin Khartoum and the Sudan People’sLiberation Army, some 2 milliondisplaced people have returned to theircommunities in Southern Sudan andthe so-called ‘Three Areas’ of Abyei,Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan. Alarge number of southerners livingin the North, including an unknownnumber of IDPs, have made their wayto South Sudan during the course of theyear, ahead of the referendum on independencewhich took place in January<strong>20</strong>11.In Iraq, although close to 300,000people were able to return home in <strong>20</strong>10,an estimated 1.3 million remained dis-25 According to IDMC estimates, the number of IDPs inSudan is estimated at up to 5.2 million.placed within the country by the end ofthe year. Some 303,000 IDPs in Ugandawere also able to return to their villagesin the course of the year, reducing theIDP population remaining in campsand transit sites to 126,000. Both IDPsand IDP returnees in Uganda continuedto benefit from <strong>UNHCR</strong>’s protectionand assistance activities under thecluster approach in order to ensure thatall individuals, especially the extremelyvulnerable, can find a durable solutionin the course of <strong>20</strong>11.Kyrgyzstan witnessed extensive newinternal displacement in mid-<strong>20</strong>10. Atthe peak of the crisis, <strong>UNHCR</strong> estimatedthat up to 400,000 people wereaffected.
