LLE 7101: THEORY AND PRACTICES OF LANGUAGE AND LITERATUREPEDAGOGY (Core for MED LLE Students)Course DescriptionThis course is designed for the study of contemporary theory and grounded knowledge ofpractices in the teaching of language and literature. It is aimed at ensuring learners‟understanding of (i) the knowledge underpinning teaching methodologies and (ii) the value ofselected methodology. The course involves both theoretical and practical sessions, the latterrequiring students to conduct classes to demonstrate choices of methodology based on selectedtheories and guided by context.Learning OutcomesLearners will be able to:(i) analyse theoretical considerations that influence teachers‟ methods anywhere;(ii) critique common and other arguments for and against various methodologies;(iii) apply their understanding of the strengths of effective methodologies in language andliterature classrooms, and(iv) demonstrate a sound mix of methodologies for effective teaching.ObjectivesThe course is designed to equip learners with:(i) knowledge of a range of existing methodologies;(ii) skills for using various methodologies to teach literature and language;(iii) competence for assessing teachers‟ selection and classroom application ofmethodologies, and(iv) competence for developing in others the skills of teaching literature and languageeffectively.ContentLearners will be exposed to the philosophical underpinnings of teacher-centred, learner centredand learning-centred methods. They will critique a range of language teaching approaches aswell as teaching methods and techniques and describe their value for language and literatureclassrooms.
