3 Classification of electric switchgear3.1 Open switchgear and closed switchgear - 3.2 External configuration- 3.3 Installation conditionsThere are different classifications for electric switchgear, which depend on various factors:on the type of construction, on external configuration, on installation conditions and on thefunction carried out.3.1 Open switchgear and closed switchgearAccording to the type of construction, the IEC 60439-1 Standard first of all distinguishesbetween open and closed switchgear.- ClosedThe switchgear is closed when it includes panels protected on all sides to guarantee adegree of protection against direct contacts not less than IPXXB (see chapter 4). Theswitchgear used in ordinary environments must be closed.- OpenOpen switchgear, with or without front protection, are the so-called open switchgear, where live parts are accessible. This switchgear can only be used in electricalworkshops, i.e. in places where trained personnel have access.3.2 External configurationFrom the viewpoint of external configuration, the switchgear is distinguished by being:- With cabinet (column)Used for large distribution and control apparatus. By placing several cabinets side byside switchgear with multiple cabins is obtained.- With benchUsed for controlling machines or complex plants both in the mechanical industry sectorand in those of the iron and steel or chemical industries.- With boxCharacterized by wall mounting both extending and embedded. This switchgear isused for distribution at department or zone level in industrial and service sector environments.- With multiple boxesEach box, usually of the protected type and with release flanges, contains a functionalunit which can be an automatic circuit-breaker, a starter, or a socket complete withcircuit-breaker lock or protection.3.3 Installation conditionsFrom the viewpoint of the installation conditions, the switchgear is distinguished by:- Switchgear for indoor useSwitchgear intended to be used in rooms where there are normal operating conditionsfor indoor use, as specified in 6.1 of IEC 60439-1, i.e.:Environmental installation conditions for indoor useRelative humidity Air temperature Altitude0% (at a maximum temperature of 40° C)90% (at a maximum temperature of 20° C)Maximum temperature ≤40° CMaximum average temperature over a period of 24 hours ≤35° CMinimum temperature ≥ -5° CNot above2000 m- Switchgear for outdoorsSwitchgear intended for use under normal operating conditions for outdoor installations,as specified in 6.1 of IEC 60439-1, i.e.:Environmental installation for outdoor conditionsRelative humidity Air temperature Altitude100% temporarily(at a maximum temperature of 25° C)Maximum temperature ≤40° CMaximum average temperature over a period of 24 hours ≤35° CMinimum temperature ≥-25° C for temperate climatesMinimum temperature ≥-50° C for arctic climatesNot above2000 m- Fixed switchgearSwitchgear intended to be fixed on the installation site, for example on the floor or ona wall and to be used in that place.- Moveable switchgearSwitchgear intended to be easily moved from one place of use to another.GENERALSTANDARDS ANDCHARACTERISTICSVERIFYING THEOVERTEMPERATURESPROTECTION AGAINSTSHORT-CIRCUIT ANDELECTRIC SHOCKSPRACTICAL INDICATIONSCERTIFICATION ANDCONSTRUCTIONCERTIFICATESDECLARATION OFCONFORMITYABB SACEGuide to Construction of ArTu switchgear7
