The best or nothing – the safety experts at Mercedes-Benz have longadopted this motto, coined by Gottlieb Daimler, as their guiding principle. Farfrom contenting themselves with achieving rating targets, they workintensively on attaining a level of safety which far exceeds the standardsstipulated by the world's legislators. The most important measure of their workis not the laboratory or crash test facility, but actual, real-life accidents. Theycall the results of their work Real Life Safety, a concept which is based onresearch into thousands of accidents. Using this irrefutable evidence, theMercedes-Benz engineers have developed or initiated most of the assistancesystems which today effectively support drivers and have been adopted bymany of the company's competitors.ATTENTION ASSIST and ADAPTIVE BRAKE as standardThe new SLK also features a unique combination of driver assistance systemswhich help to avoid accidents. These include the drowsiness detection systemATTENTION ASSIST, for example. Thanks to this system, the roadster developsa precise feeling for the level of attentiveness of the driver and can provide anearly warning of overtiredness.Also making up part of the standard equipment specification is the ADAPTIVEBRAKE. It comprises ABS, the acceleration skid control system ASR and alsoactive yaw control (GMR). In addition, it features the following functions:• it supports the driver when moving off uphill, by preventing the vehiclefrom unintentionally rolling back;• it also keeps the vehicle stationary without having to keep the brakesapplied continuously - for example when waiting at traffic lights(HOLD function);• as soon as the driver abruptly steps off the accelerator, it brings thebrake pads into light contact with the brake discs as a precautionarymeasure, so that the necessary braking pressure can be attainedquicker in the possible event of emergency braking;• in wet conditions it applies light brake contact, without the drivereven noticing, to dry the brake discs.Daimler Communications, 70546 Stuttgart/GermanyMercedes-Benz – A Daimler Brand
The ADAPTIVE BRAKE works in conjunction with the equally adaptive brakelight. In emergency braking situations, it warns vehicles behind with flashingbrake lights.Page 39Emergency braking on detecting an acute risk of a front-end collisionAvailable as optional extras are the DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control as wellas the PRE-SAFE ® Brake, already tried and tested in other Mercedes-Benzmodels. Both systems work in conjunction and can initiate emergency brakingautomatically on detecting an acute risk of an accident.In normal driving conditions, the radar-based DISTRONIC PLUS proximitycontrol adjusts the distance to the vehicle in front automatically. If necessary,it can apply the brakes, even bringing the SLK Roadster to a stop, andaccelerate it again. This takes some of the strain off the driver, particularly inbumper-to-bumper driving conditions. If the distance starts to narrow tooquickly, the system gives the driver visual and audible warnings, therebyprompting the driver to take action, at which point he is also supported byBrake Assist PLUS (BAS PLUS).If the systems detect the acute danger of a rear-end collision and the driverfails to respond to visual and acoustic warnings, the electronics activate thePRE-SAFE ® Brake in preparation for autonomous braking. This happens in twostages:• Around 1.6 seconds before the calculated impact point the systemdecelerates the car with around 40 percent (approx. four m/s²) ofthe maximum braking power, gives the driver an additional, hapticwarning of the impending impact and as a precaution activates thereversible PRE-SAFE ® occupant protection system.• If the driver still fails to react, the PRE-SAFE ® Brake activates themaximum braking power around 0.6 seconds before the nowunavoidable collision – this emergency braking can greatly reduce theseverity of the impact.
