Kerby Centre 2012 Annual ReportMembershipDiversityIn 2012, Kerby Centre had 2,894 members.This number includes a total of 725 firsttimemembers.Membership is open to older adults aged 55years or older, and is valid for one calendaryear (January 1 to December 31).ExpoKerby Centre supported a diversepopulation through the following efforts:• Subscribed to the translation serviceCanTalk Canada which providestranslation for 110 languages• Held Metis Fest (Oct), Diwali (Nov)• Sought assistance with Metis and CCISon cultural events and collaborated tomake events successful• Created multi language cards to beused in conjunction with the Can Talktranslation phone service• Attended cultural events to increaseknowledge and network• Provided staff with copies ofMulticultural Sensitivity Guide• Included an article on Ramadan inKerby News• Invited speakers to staff meetings toprovide education to staff• Muslim, Metis, Mental Healthpresentations throughout the yearprovided staff with information tobe more culturally responsive; openand informed about the beliefs andbehaviors valued by other culturesShopsMayor Naheed Nenshi and Kerby CentreCEO Luanne Whitmarsh open the ExpoThe Kerby Get Up and Go Expo held onSeptember 6 and 7 welcomed over 1,600visitors. The event offered stimulatinglectures on active ageing topics, a visit fromMayor Nenshi and a full complement ofbooths with products and services geared toadult consumers.The Next to New store and the Wise OwlBoutique at Kerby Centre are open tothe public and the proceeds help to fundprograms and services throughout theagency. The Next to New store sells cleansecond-hand clothing. In 2012, Next toNew had 2,594 client contacts. The WiseOwl Boutique is a consignment shop,selling unique handmade items made byconsigners over the age of 55. In 2012,The Wise Owl Boutique’s contacts were4,303 clients throughout the year.A Year of Growth11
