<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong>MembershipDiversityIn <strong>2012</strong>, <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> had 2,894 members.This number includes a <strong>to</strong>tal of 725 firsttimemembers.Membership is open <strong>to</strong> older adults aged 55years or older, and is valid <strong>for</strong> one calendaryear (January 1 <strong>to</strong> December 31).Expo<strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> supported a diversepopulation through <strong>the</strong> following ef<strong>for</strong>ts:• Subscribed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> translation serviceCanTalk Canada which providestranslation <strong>for</strong> 110 languages• Held Metis Fest (Oct), Diwali (Nov)• Sought assistance with Metis and CCISon cultural events and collaborated <strong>to</strong>make events successful• Created multi language cards <strong>to</strong> beused in conjunction with <strong>the</strong> Can Talktranslation phone service• Attended cultural events <strong>to</strong> increaseknowledge and network• Provided staff with copies ofMulticultural Sensitivity Guide• Included an article on Ramadan in<strong>Kerby</strong> News• Invited speakers <strong>to</strong> staff meetings <strong>to</strong>provide education <strong>to</strong> staff• Muslim, Metis, Mental Healthpresentations throughout <strong>the</strong> yearprovided staff with in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>to</strong>be more culturally responsive; openand in<strong>for</strong>med about <strong>the</strong> beliefs andbehaviors valued by o<strong>the</strong>r culturesShopsMayor Naheed Nenshi and <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>CEO Luanne Whitmarsh open <strong>the</strong> ExpoThe <strong>Kerby</strong> Get Up and Go Expo held onSeptember 6 and 7 welcomed over 1,600visi<strong>to</strong>rs. The event offered stimulatinglectures on active ageing <strong>to</strong>pics, a visit fromMayor Nenshi and a full complement ofbooths with products and services geared <strong>to</strong>adult consumers.The Next <strong>to</strong> New s<strong>to</strong>re and <strong>the</strong> Wise OwlBoutique at <strong>Kerby</strong> <strong>Centre</strong> are open <strong>to</strong><strong>the</strong> public and <strong>the</strong> proceeds help <strong>to</strong> fundprograms and services throughout <strong>the</strong>agency. The Next <strong>to</strong> New s<strong>to</strong>re sells cleansecond-hand clothing. In <strong>2012</strong>, Next <strong>to</strong>New had 2,594 client contacts. The WiseOwl Boutique is a consignment shop,selling unique handmade items made byconsigners over <strong>the</strong> age of 55. In <strong>2012</strong>,The Wise Owl Boutique’s contacts were4,303 clients throughout <strong>the</strong> year.A Year of Growth11
