Bond, O.D.Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterized by damage to the optic nerve. In its early stages, glaucoma may present few or no symptoms and can graduallysteal sight without warning. In fact, it is estimated that half of the peopleaffected by glaucoma do not know they have it. If left undetected and untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness. One of the major risk factors for glaucoma is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP),or pressure inside the eye. A healthy eye produces fl uids, called aqueous humor,at the same rate at which it drains. High pressure occurs when the drainagesystem is blocked and the fl uid cannot exit at a normal rate. This increased IOPpushes against the optic nerve causing gradual damage, which may result invision loss, usually starting with the peripheral, or side vision. Increased eyepressure is often associated with gradual damage to the nerve fi bers that makeup the optic nerve. Family history of glaucoma, age, race, and diabetes are allcontributing risk factors for developing this “silent” eye disease.Call Bond Family Eye Care today for your Comprehensive Eye Health Evaluation.March 12 is World Glaucoma Daywww.WGDAY.netBOND FAMILY EYE CARETherapeutic Optometrists • Optometric Glaucoma Specialists2351 S. 8 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 5, 2009BUSINESSLAKE BRIDGEPORTRetiree becomes ‘egghead’with cottage industryBy DENNY DEADYWhat began as a birthdaygift from his wife hasgrown into a cottage industryfor Doug Dunlap of LakeBridgeport.Cheri Dunlap went insearch of a 60th birthdaygift for her husband, wholoves to cook and is good atit. While looking for a standardbarbecue grill, she cameacross the Big Green Egg, aceramic appliance that isfashioned after the Japenesekamado. It is billed as“the world’s best smoker andgrill.” Something that couldgrill and smoke was exactlywhat Doug wanted. There are many accessoriesavailable for the darkgreen, egg-shaped cooker, including an “egg crate,” astand to hold the Egg. ButDoug wanted somethingmore substantial, somethingthat would raise theegg to a convenient heightfor cooking and somethingwith room for his utensils. So he headed for his workshop, where the sign by thedoor reads, “The Doug-Out,No Gurlz Allowed.” There hedesigned and built a 5-foottable for his Egg, the first ofmany he would build.“I have been interested inwoodworking all my life,”said Dunlap. He got serious about thecraft in 1998 when he andCheri moved to Lake Bridgeportand gutted their home, totally remodeling it, withhelp. They volunteered withHabitat for Humanity inMississippi, following HurricaneKatrina, and closerto home, they helped withthe local Habitat house inBridgeport.Doug and Cheri have alsopartnered on a home remodelingproject at the lake, andDoug is often called on byneighbors for help with theirprojects. What began as a projectto meet his individual needshas grown into a business.Doug has built Egg tablesfor a high-end barbecue accessoriesstore as well as forindividuals. He begins each Egg tableby allowing the lumber tocure at least three weeks.HATCHED AN IDEA — Doug Dunlap of Lake Bridgeport designsand builds custom tables for The Big Green Egg, a ceramiccooker that smokes and grills. Dunlap has built the tables fora high-end barbecue accessories store in the Metroplex aswell as for individuals. He uses 2X6 lumber that hehas run through his planer. He glues the pieces togetherand sands the top and lowershelf. The table is put togetherwith 2-inch, 14-gaugesquare steel tubing, and hedoes all his own welding.“It’s going to last as long asthe Egg,” he said confidently. He finishes each table witha minimum of three coats ofspar urethane, hand sandingbetween coats. The bottomshelf is finished to perfection, just like the top of thetable.Dunlap has stock plansfor various tables for thelarger versions of the Egg,but he also builds tables tocustomers’ specifications. Herecently completed a tablefor an Egg owner in the HillCountry who wanted a tablewith two different heightsand cabinet doors. The steelcan be painted to the customer’sspecifications. The former mayor of LakeBridgeport has cooked brisket, ribs, chicken, turkey, meatloaf, burgers, pizza andmuch more on his Egg andis sold on the quality of theitems he cooks. Because ofthe baffle between the grateand the charcoal, the meatdoesn’t come in direct contactwith the flames. The resultis a very moist meat.Breakfast can even be preparedin an Egg, and Cherisays she is anxious to trybaking a cake in it.The Egg will cook everything“from biscuits to briskets,”according to Doug. The Dunlaps look forwardto getting more involvedwith other Egg owners.“It’s kind of like a cult,”Doug said with a laugh.“There are egg fests, whereeggheads get together anddemonstrate their skills, similar to barbecue cookoffs.”To see Doug’s tables, visithis Web site at www.MrD-Stuff.com. Lovette, M.D. and StaffBoard Certified in General PediatricsBED WETTING: NOREASON FOR PANICAlmost every parent has been, orwill be, awakened in the night by achild with wet pajamas. Nocturnalenuresis, or bedwetting, is fairlycommon in young children. If a childis still habitually wetting the bed pastage six, however, it may be time forhelp. A pediatrician can prescribemedication to control enuresis, butthere are measures parents cantake before going the medical route.Establish an evening routine witha beverage cutoff time and severalbathroom visits before bed. Reward“dry mornings” with special treats. Wetpajamas can be quite embarrassing,so try not to scold a child about bedwetting or bring it up around otherpeople. If preventative measuresdon’t work, consult a pediatrician.Lockheed Recreation Center3400 S. Bryant Irvin Rd., Ft. ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 5, 2009 15WISE OUTDOORSBy LUKE CLAYTONIt’s been said that thereare two types of ranches inTexas; those with hogs andthose about to get them.Wild hogs create an estimated$400 million in annualdamage to agriculturalcrops, hay meadows andrangeland in Texas alone.Hogs, domestic and wild, are highly prolific. Sowsbreed at 6 to 8 months andlitters range from 5 to 10piglets. Considering thathalf of a litter are sows, it’seasy to see the number ofhogs that one breeding sowcan propagate in a matterof a few months. There isno doubt that keeping theirnumbers in check is of primaryconcern to everyone, but hunting them from helicoptersby paying clients? Ion’t think so.Texas Parks and WildlifeTPWD) is being asked toormulate rules for huntnghogs from helicopter.t’s been legal to controlog numbers via helicoptersince 1996. Through theend of last year, a little over1,000 permits were grantedfor controlling wild porkersith the use of choppers.I have no problem withroperly permitted landwnerscontrolling hog numerson their ranches fromhe air. It’s not sporting, butwhen trained shooters andvery experienced chopperpilots are involved, shootinghogs from the air canbe an efficient, albeit expensivemeans of reducing theirnumbers and the damagecaused by the gregariousporkers.Present laws prohibitcharging a recreational(guide) fee for hunting hogsfrom the air. If the new lawis adopted, “guided” huntsfrom helicopter will be legal. If this proposal becomes law,I can see all kinds of resultingproblems. Let’s assumea qualified helicopter pilotbooks a hunt with a coupleguys to go on an “air” hoghunt. Chances are prettygood this will be the firsttime either flew in a chopperCONTROLLING HOGS — Wild hogs like this one can do great damage to the habitat andtheir numbers must be kept under control, but not by paid hunters shooting them from ahelicopter.and definitely the first timethey did any shooting fromthe air. Granted, a few mighthave been machinegunners on a chopperback in the VietNam era, but thevast majority willbe “sportsmen” outlooking for a bit ofexcitement.Imagine the mishapsthat couldoccur when folksbegin bangingaway at runninghogs from the air.Adrenaline levels would behigh; the potential for accidentsvastly outweigh thebenefits. What would happenwhen an excited clientis tracking a running pigthrough his rifle scope inheavy cover, banging awayand kicking up dust aroundthe fleeing porker. Shootingat running game requiresintense concentration, evenwhen shots are taken atground level. After a fewmissed shots at the runninghog, a cow or horse appearsin the line of sight. Will theshooter have time to reactor, being caught up in theexcitement of the moment, continue shooting?I’m all for hunting wildhogs and I fully understandthe necessity to control theirnumbers but, to my way ofthinking, trapping or huntingthem with dogs is farmore reasonable and muchsafer than allowing anyonewith the guide feeto shoot them fromthe air. I truly believethat once thisproposed legislationis thoroughlystudied by TPWD,it will never becomelaw. If it does,I would suggestmaking sure thedeer lease you willbe hunting nextyear does not allowshooting hogs, or anythingelse, from the air. I certainlydo not wish to have to worryabout someone from abovespreading rounds over themesquite flat where my bowstand is situated, especiallywhen I’m in it!Just for fun, imagine someof the conversations thatcould occur between the‘hunters’ and chopper pilotsif this ridiculous idea did becomelaw:“Here, hold this cold one,CLAYTONI ‘think’ I see a hog downthere.”Or, “You’ll have to keepthis thing more steady. Here, take this shotgun, I thinkI’m gonna be sick!”Or, “Do you allow grenades?”Or, “Do we still get chargedthe full rate if you aren’table to get the pigs to slowdown enough for us to hitthem?”Or, “Do you do the fielddressing, or do we, once weget back on the ground? Bythe way, how do we find thehogs we’ve shot? Everythinglooks the same from up herein the air!”Or, “Did you say it’s OK toflip this thing on fully auto?I’ve been wanting to give it atry on something running!”Or, “Does meat processingcome with the price of these‘chopper hunts’?”■Listen to Outdoors withLuke Clayton radio showeach week at www.catfishradio.com.WatchmenTired Of FeelingSick And Tired?Concealed Handgun ClassesClass Begins April 19must pre register• Buy• Sell• TradeConsignments Welcome!• New & Used Guns • Reloading Supplies • Gunsmithing • Bluing1691 W. While women may have heardall this before, it bears repeating that stopping smoking, maintaininga healthy weight, eating a healthful diet, and getting regular physicalexercise significantly reduce the risk of dying from any cause, particularly heart disease and cancer. Adhering to the advice to adoptthis combination of lifestyle factors should empower women byreinforcing the notion that their longevity is largely in their own hands.Once women understand that they have control over their lives in thisrespect, they can largely control their destinies. We are there for you when it’s time to make those importanthealthcare decisions. 16 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 5, 2009SAVVY SENIORDear Savvy Senior,Are generic medications as effectiveas brand-name drugs, andf so, why are they so much cheapr? Also, how can I find out whichedicines are available in genericform.Brand-Name BuyerDear Buyer,Generic drugs are just as effectivend safe as their brand-name counerpartsbecause they're virtually theame – except for the price of course.ere's what you should know.Copied drugsApproved by the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration (FDA), generic drugscontain the same active ingredients, dosage and quality as their brandnamecounterparts. The only differencesbetween them are the name (genericdrugs are usually called by theirchemical names), shape and color ofthe drug (U.S. trademark laws don'tallow generics to look exactly like thebrand-name drugs), and price (whichis between 30 and 90 percent less).Cost differenceThe reason generic drugs are so muchcheaper is because their manufacturersdon't have the hefty start-up coststhat the original creators of the drugdo. When a pharmaceutical companycreates a new drug, it spends millionsof dollars on the research, developmentand clinical testing phase. Then,if it gets FDA approval, it has to turnaround and spend even more money tomarket the drug to the public, pharmacies, health insurance companiesand doctor's offices. The total cost canrise into the hundreds of millions bythe time the drug is in the hands ofconsumers. In an effort to recoup their investment, the brand-name drug makerscharge a premium price, and are givena 20 year patent protection, whichmeans that no other company canmake or sell the drug during that periodof time. After those twenty years are up,however, other companies can apply tothe FDA to sell generic versions. Butbecause generic manufacturers don'thave the same research, developmentand marketing costs, they can selltheir product much cheaper. Also, oncegeneric drugs are approved, there'sgreater competition, which keeps theprice down. Today, more than half ofall prescriptions are filled with genericdrugs, and according to the CongressionalBudget Office, generic drugssave U.S. consumers an estimated $10billion a year.Look genericSince not all brand-name drugs havegeneric alternatives, the easiest wayto find them is to ask your doctor orpharmacist, or check the FDA onlinedrug catalog at www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda. Betteryet visit www.rxaminer.com, a greatWeb site that lets you easily search forbrand-name drugs and their genericalternatives, if they exist. If they don't,it provides other low-cost alternativemedicine options, if available.2009 genericsEvery year, a number of brand-namedrugs lose their protective patent andgo generic. Among those to watch forin 2009 include the migraine drugImitrex (sumatriptan), ADHD drugAdderall XR (amphetamine), antiseizuredrugs Topamax (topiramate) andLamictal (lamotrigene), allergy drugClarinex (desloratadine), the herpesantiviral drug Valtrex (valacyclovir),GERD drugs Prevacid (lansoprazole)and Aciphex (rabeprazole), and enlargedprostrate drug Flomax (tamsulosin).Shopping tipsMany chains like Wal-Mart, Target,Costco, Kmart, CVS, Walgreens andSafeway offer great deals on manygeneric drugs. Wal-Mart for examplecharges only $4 for a 30-day supplyand $10 for a 90-day supply with no eligibilityrestrictions. You can also findgreat generic deals online at sites likeRx Outreach (www.rxoutreach.com;800-769-3880) and Xubex Pharmaceutical(www.xubex.com; 866-699-8239).Send your senior questions to: SavvySenior, P.O.
