Working with the Hawaii Foodbank
really brings home to me the essential
goodness to be found in so many
people. Even in a time of great hardship
and financial uncertainty, these angels
step up to open their wallets and their
hearts for those less fortunate. I read
letters that accompany the checks, and
often they fill me with joy and humility.
So many of you are unsung heroes, and
you deserve our thanks and a little recognition.
Case in point, a letter from a woman named Evelyn Young who says
she and her husband Ed regularly donate to the Foodbank. This year
they, like many others, have cut back on “nice to have” things in
order to focus on their family's basic needs and care. But then this
wonderful woman goes on to say:
“Even so, we are more fortunate than many others. Although this year
is even more difficult to give a lot, it is the very type of situation that
calls for us to give more than we normally do. What is that adage—the
less we have, the more we give.
This is our small part in giving more.
Evelyn, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my
heart for your generosity. You and Ed are the embodiment of
what we in Hawaii so proudly call the Aloha spirit. Your gift
means so much to us because we know it is difficult for you,
yet you give anyway. How many families have sacrificed and
tightened their belts and pinched their pennies, yet still
manage to reach deep into their reservoir and give?
For the families who are on the receiving end, the donations
mean that someone out there cares. It means they get to feed
their families and survive another day.
For us at the Hawaii Foodbank it means we can continue to
do our jobs during the harshest of times, when all agencies
are scrambling to grab or hang on to that ever shrinking pool
of dollars. The Hawaii Foodbank doesn't depend on
government money to do its work. Instead, we have put our
faith in people like you. And so far, you have never let us
down.
We are gearing up for a challenging Food Drive. We know it'll
be harder this year to meet our goals, but we are confident
that all the Eds and Evelyns of this wonderful state will not let
us down.
Thank you for your heart and for your continued support.
