V/UHF AIRBORNE RADIO SYSTEMV/UHF AIRBORNE RADIO SYSTEMDESCRIPTIONThe Airborne V/UHF Radio Systems Family RT-651/x isa line of radio-communications equipment and systems, especially dedicated but not limited to militaryapplications and its development was based on thethorough experience and know-how gained by theCompany over many years of activity in the field ofairborne radio communications. The Airborne V/UHF Radio Systems Family is composedby the SRT-651/N baseline V/UHF radio communicationssystem and its derivative versions, which have beendeveloped to provide the widest range of functional options,in order to meet diversified operational requirements. The SRT-651/x V/UHF Radio System includes:• the multi-band, multi-mode RT-651/x V/UHFTransceiver, developed by SELEX Elsag to provideaircraft with plain/secure voice/data communicationsfacilities over an extended frequency range.• ancillary equipment, such as dedicated remoteControl Panels, Mounting Trays, external PowerAmplifiers, etc., that can be coupled with the Transceiver, depending on the installation requirements and theoperative applicationThe derivative versions of the RT-651/N baselineV/UHF Transceiver offer many functional options, mainlyconcerning the frequency range, the control of theoperating parameters, EPM operation mode and accessto SATCOM channels. The following table shows the main components of theRT-651/x Transceiver Family, together with theirfundamental capabilities:All versions operate over the 30MHz to 400MHzfrequency range which allows:• Tactical communications with ground forces andArmy headquarters over the 30MHz to 88 MHz band• Air Traffic Control communications over the 118MHz to156MHz• Communications over the 156MHz to 174MHzMaritime band• Air to air and air to ground links over the 225MHz to400MHz tactical bandIn the RT-651/N-A version, the upper limit of he bandis further extended to 470MHz, a feature specificallyintended for compatibility with Tone Activated Repeateroperation required by law enforcing Agencies. The MIL-STD-1553B or ARINC 429 Bus interface allowscontrol of the operating functions by the aircraft missioncomputer, in accordance with a preplanned missionprofile. The Remote Control interface, uses a SELEXElsag proprietary protocol, associated with a dedicatedControl Unit. The following two different types of ControlUnits familt are available:• CP-9000/x family• SP-2083/x family

The control Unit selection depends from the application.EPM protection is provided by frequency-hoppingschemes over the 30MHz to 88MHz band (SINCGARS)and 225MHz to 400MHz band (SATURN, HQ I-II).In all cases where specific Customer requirements are tobe met, a SELEX Elsag, proprietary frequency, hoppingscheme (EASY-II) is available for EPM protection. The SATCOM facilities (built-in for the RT-651/N-NSand RT-651/P versions and external for the RT-651/N-Vversion) allow access to NATO Satellite communicationschannels in the DAMA (Demand Assigned MultipleAccess) mode and to SICRAL satellite covering theMediterranean area. All the versions can operate in a LINK-11 net whenassociated with an external LINK-11 data terminal set(an airborne version of the modem has been recentlydeveloped by SELEX Elsag), a capability which allows usein all missions where co-operation between naval and airforces is required. All the versions can be associated with crypto equipment(i.e. KY-58, KY-100, SELEX Elsag CM-1[x]7) for operationin the secure voice/data baseband/diphase modes andwith a variety of ancillary equipment (Homer Indicator ID1351A or equivalent, Direction Finder AN/ARA -50.DF 301E, Chelton 7-60 or equivalent) to enhanceoperational capabilities. The software oriented design of the RT-651/N allowsimplementation of the different versions primarily byaddition of new software packages or modification of theoriginal ones.At hardware level, RT-651/N has a sliced-modularconstruction which allows for easy replacement oraddition of modules in a stacked way. This allows any of the available versions to be convertedinto another one by software/hardware reconfigurationof the operating functions and of the operatingparameters.Transceiver Version Freq. range Control Interfaces EPM SATCOM30–400 30–470 ARINC MIL-STD RS-485 SATURN HQ I & II Easy II SINC MIL STD SICRAL(MHz) (MHz) 429 1553 (Ctrl Panel) GARS (**)RT-651/N x x x xRT-651/N-A (*) x x xRT-651/S x x x x xRT-651/N-S x x x x xRT-651/N-M x x xRT-651/E x x x xRT-651/N-NS x x x x x xRT-651/P x x x x x x x(*): ETSO CERTIFIED(**): TDMA/DAMA I.A.W.
