ECOS - Extended COmmunication SystemThe perfect solution to the requirements ofProfessional Mobile Radio Users

ECOS - Extended COmmunication SystemThe perfect network solution for analogue and digital Professional Mobile Radiousers. Many organizations rely on PMR (Professional Mobile Radio) networks to guarantee reliable and instant communicationsamong their workforce.PMR networks have proved over decades to be the most efficient solution for "one to one" and "one to many" allinformed communications. Over time user's requirements have evolved in terms of services and functionality. This, together with the increasing shortage of spectrum, provides new challenges for PMR technology.SELEX Communications ECOS solution meets these requirements and provides an easy to set-up, easy to use, reliable PMR network. The ECOS-D system with features including high quality communications, co-ordination betweenusers and supervision of a Control Centre, together with it's unique in the market feature of using the Simulcast(Simultaneous broadcast) technique in digital communications, makes it the ideal solution for all of theseorganizations. The ECOS-D solution provides new digital PMR services according to the ETSI DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) standardthe latest ETSI defined narrow-band digital protocol for PMR/Business Critical Organizations.Due to its complete back-wards compatibility with analogue networks, the investment in existingradio mobile system is safeguarded, providing the possibility of a soft, simple and seamlessmigration to a DMR digital network.ECOS - SIMULCASTThe ECOS solution is a PMR mobile radio system based on thesimulcast technique (SIMULtaneous broadCAST).With its macrocell structure (simulcast RBS linked to eachother), simulcast is the best solution for extended mobile radionetworks to increase radio coverage, reduce the use of radiofrequencies and increase the number of users. As all RBS broadcast the same frequency pair per channel.Simulcast systems reduce to two the number of frequenciesneeded, also reducing the Customer's costs and greatlysimplifying the procedure to use this limited and strictly regulatedresource.ECOS special features including Voting, BS Synchronization andBS Equalization make the network work as a single virtualrepeater, simplifying its usage and its management.Professional/Business Critical Organizations can benefit fromECOS simulcast in terms of:• radio coverage;• automatic hand-over and roaming;• fast call setup time;• open channel communications with analogue or digitalsignalling;• eavesdropping network protection (receive and/or transmitsides);• digital voice protection;• same-channel for voice and data communication;• conventional/dedicated channel network access.ECOS - NETWORK FLEXIBILITYAs each RBS in the simulcast network broadcasts the samefrequencies as the adjacent one, ECOS is an extremely flexiblesolution. The ECOS system lets the customer easily choose the bestconfiguration for their needs, selecting between:• widening the coverage area with adjacent macrocells workingon the same channel, to provide the best coverage for wideareas or• increasing the number of available radio channels, overlapping the macrocells to increase traffic capacity. An ECOS Simulcast System can be deployed in any networktopology configuration (star, tree, ring, linear, mixed), and itsnested infrastructure logical levels allow the solution to easilywiden its topology for any future use.Possible network architectureNested infrastructure

ECOS-D - FUTURE PROOFSELEX Communications ETSI DMR solution gives the customerthe ability to double the capacity of licensed channels', widenthe coverage area and provide advanced features using theECOS-D infrastructure together with a range of terminals fromdifferent vendors.Dual Mode for Analogue to Digital MigrationThe ECOS-D family has the unique feature of allowingcommunication both in analogue and in DMR on the samechannel, instantly switching between them in a real time dualoperating Mode. Using this feature a Customer gets to softlymigrate from analogue to digital networks on a user groupbasis, without any service interruption, implementing only apartial migration if required.Voice/ Data communicationsDue to the SELEX implementation of the DMR protocol, theECOS-D system supports, on the 2 TDMA slots of the samechannel:• two simultaneous voice communications or,• data and voice communications at the same time or• the usage of the whole channel for data communication, maximizing the throughput with dual slot data transmissionat the gross bit rate of 9.6 kbps. These possibilities give the customer greater flexibility of usageof the resource, sharing the same radio channel for differentvoice or data services in a completely transparent way for theusers. In this way ECOS-D can supply the resources for value addedapplications including Radio Traffic management, GPS locations,AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location), Telemetry (i.e. SCADAApplications) and short data services.Increasing Spectral EfficiencyThe DMR protocol implemented in ECOS-D devices allows theUsers to have 2 different logical channels in a single 12,5 kHzradio channel, hence doubling the physical channel capacity. The choice of the ECOS-D DMR solution makes it quick andeasy to increase spectrum efficiency to make the best use ofthis limited resource compared with other similar protocols.ECOS-D FAMILYSELEX Communications ECOS-D family includes different flexible and innovative solutions with a wide range of features anddifferent types of links between repeaters. The ECOS-D system maintains high performance even in the most critical environment, through the use of innovative techniquessuch as network synchronization, auto equalization of link connections and real time voting. The system acts as a single "virtualrepeater", regardless of the number of RBS (Radio Base Stations) in the network, giving the highest quality reception even inoverlapping signal areas.ECOS-D CST (Coherent Simulcast Technology) RBSs areinterconnected via single-channel UHF links integrated into thebase stations allowing the use of ECOS -D simulcast systemswhere no E1 or copper links are available.Synchronization of all network RBSs is directly derived fromthe UHF radio communication carrier itself. This patented unique feature, together with the bi-directionalsignal equalization, provides the best reception, even inoverlapping signal areas.ECOS-D A 2 T (Auto Adaptive Technology) RBS's can be linkedusing different technologies, including microwave, fibre opticand twisted copper pairs.ECOS-D A 2 T can also use different synchronization referencesincluding: GPS, E1 synchronism extraction or any externalsource. Thanks to its DSP devices, ECOS-D A 2 T also performs:• a sophisticated continuous auto equalization of linkconnections to the repeaters• to bidirectional re-equalize both in uplink and downlink thedistributed signal if changes in the network occur (i.e. anylink characteristic modifications). In this way the Customer doesn't need to tune the networkparameters on a regular basis, leaving the network to take careof itself automatically.

SINETIC NETWORK MANAGEMENT SYSTEMThe SINETIC ECOS-D NMS (SImulcast NETwork InformationController) is designed to remotely control the ECOS-D system. The SINETIC Software is based on the SNMP (Simple NetworkManagement Protocol) standard protocol and its easy to usegraphical Interface helps the user to monitor the whole network, showing the RBSs geographical distribution. The SINETIC Control Centre manages the ECOS-D network:• checking and configuring RBSs and backbone workingparameters;• monitoring and displaying system's Alarms in real time, through a user-friendly graphical interface.ECOS-D NMS package can be completed with NECOS (NEtworkCOnfiguration Software), a Local Craft Terminal software usefulto configure RBS parameters on-site.All Commands and Signalling are borne by backbonecommunication bearers or by LAN (if available) and any simulcastnetwork can be remotely controlled and supervised by SELEXCommunications Help-Desk in Milan.OBSERVER FOR CONTROL CENTRE SERVICESThe OBSERVER comprises state of the art software with aneasy to use graphical interface developed to provide ECOS-DDispatcher with a powerful set of value added Services including:• Communication with users in the field;• AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) services;• Short Data Services (SDS) transmission to users.Observer can be installed on any commercial standard PC.The AVL solution is designed with a powerful cartographicalengine allowing:• multi-maps displaying;• customized maps;• users' route-tracking;• vectorial cartography;• orthophotos support.Via Dispatcher ECOS-D system could be connected to:• other radio networks;• PABX, PSTN, LAN database or other information systems.STANDARDS AND REGULATIONSThe ECOS-D RBS complies with the following standards andregulations:• ETSI EN 300-086-2: "Radio Equipment and Systems Landmobile service - Technical characteristics and test conditionsfor radio equipment with an internal or external RF connectorintended primarily for analogue speech".• ETSI EN 300-113-2: "Radio Equipment and Systems (RES);Land mobile service; Technical characteristics and testconditions for radio equipment intended for the transmissionof data (and speech) and having an antenna connector".• ETSI TS 102-361-1/2/3: "Electromagnetic compatibility andRadio spectrum Matters (ERM); Digital Mobile Radio (DMR)Systems", licensed conventional for the new DMR standardfor digital PMR communications.• RTT&E Directive 1999/5/EC of the European Parliament.e-mail: info@selex-comms.com • www.selex-comms.comCopyright ©2006-2009 SELEX Communications SpA - All rights reserved. This publication is issued to provide outline information only which (unless agreed by SELEX CommunicationsSpA in writing) may not be used, applied or reproduced for any purpose or form part of any order or contract orbe regarded as a representation relating to the products or services concerned.
