Metals can be designated as active or inactive.Active metals (carbon steel, copper, or bronze) will typicallycorrode faster than inactive metals (stainless steel, platedparts, or anodized aluminum). When working with inactivemetals, it is generally re<strong>com</strong>mended that a primer be usedto increase the cure speed of the retaining <strong>com</strong>pound.New Loctite ® retaining <strong>com</strong>pounds have historically beenformulated as liquids due to their reactivity. This ensuresthey remain stable and ready for use. Recent breakthroughshave led to the development of a stable, semisolid stickformulation. This has opened the door to applications wherethe liquids were considered too messy or inconvenient. This new semisolid formulation allows direct contact of the<strong>com</strong>pound to the part. It ensures not only that the product isplaced exactly where it is needed, but also that it stays thereas the cylindrical assembly is positioned and assembled.the following are key factorsto consider when choosing aretaining <strong>com</strong>pound1. Gap Size Between Parts – Typically, low viscosity retaining<strong>com</strong>pounds (125 to 2000 cP) are used for gaps up to0.010". For gaps greater than 0.010", retaining <strong>com</strong>poundswith higher viscosities (>2000 cP) should be used.2. Temperature Resistance – Most Loctite ® retaining <strong>com</strong>poundsare made to withstand temperatures up to 300°F. For thoseapplications that require resistance greater than 300°F, Henkeloffers a line of high temperature resistant Loctite ® retaining<strong>com</strong>pounds that can withstand temperatures up to 450°F.3. Bond Strength – In applications that require a permanent bond,a high strength retaining <strong>com</strong>pound is re<strong>com</strong>mended. If atsome point in the future, parts will need to be taken apart forservice, it is better to use a low or medium strength product.4. Cure Speed – Many production applications require retaining<strong>com</strong>pounds with fast cure speed in order to maximizeproduction rate. On the other hand, some applications requirea slower cure so that adjustments can be made after theparts have been assembled. Our range of Loctite ® retaining<strong>com</strong>pounds offers varying rates of cure, enabling you tochoose the one that best matches your application.Loctite ® Adhesives and Sealants Product Specialistsare available to assist you with new product designs,or to help you re-engineer an existing applicationfor improved performance and cost savings. Theycan also set up testing of your parts at the HenkelCustomer Engineering Center.
