threadlocking& thread sealingYour Source forthreadlocking& thread sealingthread sealingWhen choosing a thread sealant, there are several factors thatneed to be considered. The single most important question issubstrate. Are you dealing with plastic threads, metal threads,or a <strong>com</strong>bination of both? Plastic threads usually require adifferent sealant than metal threads. In some instances, theenvironment be<strong>com</strong>es a factor. If the application requires thesealant to be in contact with harsh chemicals, then a chemicallyresistant sealant should be chosen. In other cases, the typeof thread is important. For example, if the fitting to be sealedhas large coarse threads, then a sealant with more gap fillshould be chosen. Similarly, a low viscosity sealant wouldbe better suited for fine threads. Therefore, when choosinga sealant, it is important to consider all of the factors. Thefollowing chart will help guide you through your choices.FINDING <strong>THE</strong> RIGHT THREAD SEALANTFOR <strong>THE</strong> APPLICATIONWhat are the benefits of using thread sealants?Thread sealants provide tight seals between joints, can withstandimmense pressures, allow for easier assembly and disassembly, prevent corrosion, and prevent parts from “welding” to one another.Which sealants have potable water approvals? The following Loctite ® thread sealants all have a NSF 61 potablewater approval rating: Loctite ® QuickStix 561 PST ® , 564 ,565 PST ® , and 567 PST ® .What is galling?Galling occurs when metals weld together due to lack of lubricationor ineffective lubrication during assembly. Without properlubrication, mating surfaces wear against each other and result in“welding” or seizure. Sealants containing PTFE increase lubricity, reduce galling, and enable easier assembly and disassembly. Are there any thread sealants available that are <strong>com</strong>patiblewith systems in oxygen rich environments?Loctite ® Thread Seal Tape with PTFE is the only threadsealing product that is <strong>com</strong>patible with systems in oxygenrich environments. Why is the “squeeze-out” material around the joint not cured? In order for anaerobic material to cure, there has to be two matingmetal surfaces. Any excess material that squeezes from theassembly can simply be wiped away.Loctite ® Adhesives and Sealants Product Specialistsare available to assist you with new product designs,or to help you re-engineer an existing applicationfor improved performance and cost savings. Theycan also set up testing of your parts at the HenkelCustomer Engineering Center. On the other hand, solventbasedsealants harden when the solvent evaporates. In the caseof plastic fittings, you must rely on a solvent-based sealant sincethere are no metal surfaces to cure the adhesive. Similarly, inthose cases when joining metal to plastic fittings, solvent-basedsealants are re<strong>com</strong>mended. Because only half of the substrateis metal, anaerobic sealants may produce inconsistent cure.STRAIGHT FROM The Source147U.S.: 1-800-LOCTITE (562-8483) Canada: 1-800-263-5043 www.henkelna.<strong>com</strong>/loctite www.equipment.loctite.<strong>com</strong>
