The Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition ProgramPeople at Work K-6Objectives:Students will observe artworks from the exhibition <strong>Down</strong> on the Farm and discuss what hardwork means and the physical labour required to cultivate the land. Students will create a workof art that tells a story and express in writing the thoughts of a character in their story. They willdraw their hands and hand tools from observation as well express in writing how their hand is atool.Procedure:1. Students observe and discuss artworks from theexhibition <strong>Down</strong> on the Farm and answer thequestions: What is hard work? What physical workmay be required to cultivate the land?2. Ask students about a time when they did hardphysical work.3. Engage students with the artwork by DawnSaunders Dahl and give background about the artist.4. Students will make a gesture drawing of a personholding a tool. It may be helpful for students to warmup by practicing gesture drawing first. Have studentstake turns modelling and drawing one another.5. Bring examples of hand tools into the classroomand discuss how they are used.6. Have students sketch a tool as well as their ownhands holding that tool.7. Complete drawing by having students questionwhat the surrounding landscape would look likehaving just used their tool. What other objectsmight be present? How would the characters in thedrawing be thinking/feeling or saying?8. Display and share artworks and stories in theclassroom.Additional ideas:Student example, I Worked HardDavid Ochoa, Education at the Getty1. Compare two works of art in the exhibition by examining similarities or differences in mood,time of day, location, etc.2. Have students create an image or story by thinking about how the character in the imagemight have changed in 5 years?3. Have students discuss the medium of photography and think about why it was chosen for theworks included in the exhibition <strong>Down</strong> on the Farm. In partners, students may want to decidehow to pose and take their own photographs of their hands holding a tool.4. Develop a topic sentence about their hands as tools.5.
