Vol. 19, No. 219 Years ofHelping Children and FamiliesWeather the Storms of Life!Did you know that in Missouri:◆ there are 238 children reportedabused - every day;◆ 2 babies die before their firstbirthday - every day;◆ an average of 18 children areremoved from their home - every day;◆ those 18 children can expectto be in foster care - every day, forover 2 years!For the past 19 years the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery has been the premier child abuseprevention agency providing a lifeline to families in crisis. The Crisis Nursery has beena busy place this past year, highlights include:◆ Providing a safe haven for 3,961 children;◆ Providing 118% increase in the number of home and community visits withfamilies;◆ Partnering with the Deaconess Foundation to build Saint Louis Crisis Nurserycapacity as we continue to increase our services to children and families;◆ The Stay-At-Home Parent program provided intensive home-based services toover 50 families each month, helping infants and toddlers succeeddevelopmentally;◆ Crisis Nursery Family Support staff are partnering with the Christian ActivityCenter in East St. Louis to provide community-based services to families withyoung children;Did you know that:◆ 15 families in crisis reach out to theCrisis Nursery for help - every day;◆ over 10 children receive a developmentalassessment - every day;◆ volunteers provide more than 57hours of nurturing care - every day!Photos by Esther Strauss Smoller & Dennis O'MalleyPhotos by Dennis OʼMalleyÐ

Our Families and Children!Tonia called requesting care for her three children, ages five, seven, and nine. The familyhad been homeless for months and had spent the last 2 weeks living in a friends car. Theweather was hot and Tonia was feeling horrible about having the children in the car. Shehad tried to call several homeless shelters and all were full. The Crisis Nursery brought thethree children into safety and during their stay, staff was able to call shelters on Tonia’sbehalf to advocate for the family. They were accepted into a longer-term shelter wherethey were out of the harsh weather conditions and Tonia could work on finding permanenthousing.. . . Ways To Get Involved!Best Friends Group-Join a dynamic group of individuals Chaired by Mary Anne Montgomery.This group is dedicated to helping further the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery's mission of childabuse prevention. In addition to the wonderful array of winesand great companionship, attendees enjoyed a preview of chic clothing trends bythe Bassford Shops and unique fashionables by Ladybugs. This special eveningraised over $3,000 and introduced many new friends to the Nursery! Plans are inthe works for another wine tasting. VOLUNTEERS:A LASTING LEGACY OF LOVETemporary care – lasting results! This not only applies to theCrisis Nursery, but also to its valuable volunteers.The temporary care given by volunteers is a lasting gift!Example:A family of five children arrivedat the Crisis Nurseryseveral weeks ago. A littlenervous about staying withus, especially leaving mom.It was a difficult time just aftermom left – we had somevery weepy and unhappy littlepeople. Without missing abeat two volunteers openedthe dress-up closet andstarted a parade with childrenin all kinds of costumes.This caused a delightful calmand a reassurance that thisplace is ok and fun. The children relaxed and thenext couple of days were pure enjoyment!10 YEARS OFGIVING BACK . . .AND RECEIVINGMORE!Pat Kamler, of Webster Groves, iscelebrating 10 Years of VolunteerService at the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery. Pat has been comingreligiously every Thursday evening and spends hours with thechildren who crave her care and compassion. Rain or shine,Pat is there with a smile on her face to comfort, feed, bathe andentertain the children. Her genuine concern for each individualchild and her attention to detail is exemplified in picking out justthe right pair of pajamas for the kids at night, and selecting theperfect video to calm them at quiet time."Ten years ago, after finishing my Masters Degree, I decidedit was time to do something for others, instead of myself,” saidPat Kamler. “I love coming to the Crisis Nursery because evenafter a very hard day at the office, an evening with children whosimply need some time and attention improves my outlook onlife.” Thank you, Pat, for giving back!Volunteering at the Crisis Nursery can fulfill your desire to makea difference in the life of a child. We provide lots of opportunitiesto make this happen, but what makes it all work is someone wholoves children and has a couple of hours a week to give. Therewards are many!
