Your Support Made A Difference in FY 09: 

Celebrity Waitress & Waiters Night 2009 

In August, more than 800 friends gathered at Plaza Frontenac 

to have dinner at either Canyon Cafe or Cardwell's at the 

Plaza and be served by more than 80 Celebrities. Because of 

your generous support of this event, 250 children had a safe 

haven when their safety was jeopardized.

6,276 children remained safe! 

The Saint Louis Crisis Nursery provided a safe, therapeutic 

environment for children including 24-Hour safe care, 

medical care, individualized therapeutic activities, clothing, 

nutritious meals and many, many hugs! 

3,253 families remained intact! 

99% of children provided a safe haven at the Crisis Nursery 

returned to their natural family home and did NOT 

experience abuse; families like: 

●the stressed mother of three boys whose main 

source of income was lost due to factory closure 

and the father taking a job out-of-town to keep 

food on the table; 

●the mother who left a domestic violence situation 

to keep her two little girls safe, struggling to find a 

place to live and a new job; 

●the mother and her two little ones facing homelessness 

when medical bills and utility bills be 

came overwhelming and she couldn’t afford the 

rent; 

Charity Golf Classic 2009 

Golfers from Emerson, Save-A-Lot, Accenture, Centene and 

many more corporate citizens joined together on June 8th to 

raise funds which provided more than 6,000 hours of emergency 

care to children at risk of abuse.

From the Chief Executive Officer's Desk... 

For the past 15 years of my tenure at the Crisis Nursery, I have witnessed many challenges – and amazing rewards. 

I want to share a most recent challenge with you as we serve record numbers of girls and boys. 

I have worked with families of domestic violence for many years, and have been disheartened to see the dramatic 

surge in calls involving domestic violence. The volatility of the economy has really affected the families we serve, 

whose daily struggles are difficult even in the best of times. Already fragile due to the obstacles of poverty and 

limited family resources, they now face serious long-term consequences presented by domestic violence. 

I remember one special six year old little girl, Maya. She was just precious, but had such a sad face. One day she 

told staff that her mom was "turning black and blue". Mom confided that she has been experiencing domestic violence, we helped her put a 

safety plan in place and are confident this family will make it through their current storm. 

The good news is that your donations help families like Maya have a safe haven. The reward is that your gift can truly double its impact at 

half the cost. We are so fortunate to have Neighborhood Assistance Program tax credits, as well as Youth Opportunity Program tax credits. 

This means that whether you support the Nursery from your business or personally, you can avail yourself of these credits. Your income level 

does not affect your eligibility for these wonderful credits generously made available by our state. My husband and I love being a member of 

the Giving Circle, which is our dedicated group of most generous supporters. 100% of our $1,000 donation helps the children of the Nursery, 

and it only costs our family less than half. As always, thank you for your generous heart.

BEST FRIENDS OF THE CRISIS NURSERY 

The Best Friends group is made up of individuals who have joined together to support the Crisis Nursery through volunteering and 

helping with fundraising events, securing needed donations and resources and, sometimes, developing special events to benefit 

the children served by the Nursery. 

There are no minimum requirements, and the various ways in which Best Friends can support the Nursery 

offer each individual unique opportunities to share their time, talents and skills. Some help weekly, some only 

a couple times a year. Some rock babies to sleep at one of the Nursery sites, others collect “gently used” 

clothing and toys for the Nursery, or stuff envelopes in the offices. Others help with “handy work” (painting, 

fixing broken gates, yard work, etc.), or make presentations to civic, church and professional organizations 

to educate others about the mission of the Crisis Nursery. If you would like to become a Best Friend please

Holiday Angels 

The Crisis Nursery is in its 23rd year of brightening 

the holiday season for hundreds of children 

and families. Your business associates, family, 

friends, neighbors, or any groups to which you 

belong can significantly impact the lives of impoverished 

children in our community. 

Generous sponsors are “matched” with families 

who are struggling to provide life’s necessities 

such as utilities, food and rent. These families 

lack the money for the luxury of a holiday meal 

or gifts for their children. We are currently recruiting 

Holiday Angels and could use your help! 

Holiday Hearts Angels 

have a variety of ways 

to assist our families: 

sponsoring a family; 

purchasing needed 

items for the Nurseries; 

contributing to 

a utility bill or rental 

assistance; or simply 

send a monetary gift 

that will be used to purchase 

gifts for our Crisis 

Nursery children. 

Crisis NurseryWine Tastings 

The Crisis Nursery held two Wine Tastings 

this past June. Andria's Steakhouse 

of Chesterfield and Sherlocks 

Steak & Seafood in Cottleville both 

welcomed the Crisis Nursery and provided 

guests with fabulous wine to taste. 

These events raised $7,000 to benefit 

the children of the Crisis Nurseries.

$1,000 to benefit the children of the Crisis Nursery. Board

Crisis Nursery Wentzville celebrated its 1st Birthday, 

September 18th, 2009, with a party and the Angel Garden Dedication. Since 

opening, more than 1,400 children have been provided a safe haven. To

Thanks to the Community & Children’s Resource Board, SSM Healthcare 

and TR Hughes, Crisis Nursery Wentzville opened August 2008 — the 5th 

Crisis Nursery increased capacity by 30% and is providing safe care to 

children and support to families in an underserved community; 

The Saint Louis Crisis Nursery was chosen as the Charity of Choice by the 

Suburban Journals Old Newsboys Day Fund and a Community Champion 

by Institute of Family Medicine. 

The Nursery provided emergency care to 25% more children than FY 08 

There has been a 170% increase of children served from the counties of 

Lincoln, Warren and Franklin.
